The Winged Boots are an uncommon wondrous item granted to Hugo at level-up between sessions 10 and 11 [5], “I saw you had picked the wing boots”). Terry specifically chose the Cloak of Protection over a second pair, on the reasoning that “I didn’t think two people with wing boots was fair” [6] and that the boots are “borderline rare” rather than uncommon [7]. Per the 2024 rules update at this table, the boots provide a flying speed equal to walking speed for up to 4 hours per day, in increments of at least 1 hour — the “1-hour-increment” nerf is explicit [2]. Hugo has airlifted Caelumn out of the s11 owlbear engagement [3] and Caelumn and Vasquez out of the s14 Gummy Mummy chamber.
Overview
Standard 5e Winged Boots, with the 2024 rule revision applied at this table (1-hour minimum increments, 4 total hours per day). Awarded to Hugo at the s10/s11 level-up bestowal as a player choice — the DM offered a magic item, Hugo picked the boots and Terry picked the Cloak of Protection partly to avoid the “two people with wing boots” balance problem [4].
Notable use
- s11 — owlbears: Hugo activated the boots in combat, flew up 20 feet, picked up the unconscious Caelumn from the ground (60-70 lbs, within carry weight), and lifted him out of the owlbears’ melee range [3]. The boots’ utility for rescue-casters got their first showcase here.
- s14 — Gummy Mummy chamber: airlifted Caelumn and Vasquez out of the chamber after the encounter went sideways.
Status as of session 16
Carried, attuned. No further notable use this session.
