The E.V. ring is a ring bearing the initials E.V., found on a finger of The severed hand at Greysmere in session 21 [1]. Father Thomas worked it off the hand, took it together with a twist of charcoal cloth from the same hand, and put both in his pocket [2][3][4]. Nothing else about it is known: the DM described no material or design beyond the initials, nobody has checked it for magic, and whose initials they are has not been said.
Overview
The E.V. ring was on The severed hand when the party examined it at the chopping block in Greysmere. The hand is “a human hand” [6], cut off by Fen from one of the undead who took the innkeeper’s son Pell [7][8]. Father Thomas took the ring, with a twist of charcoal cloth from the same finger, and has carried both since [3][4].
Description
The DM’s description of the hand is the ring’s only description:
“You see the hand’s grey skin has pulled tight over the bones. You notice a ring that bears the initials E.V. And you see charcoal clothing that is twisted around one finger.” — Nick (DM), [1]
The cloth is “this, I guess, cloth ring” in Father Thomas’s words [3]. Its colour matches Fen’s account of Pell’s abductors, “They’re all in charcoal robes.” [9]; that it came from one of those robes is an inference, not something the DM has said. See The charcoal-robed kidnappers.
Mechanics (as played)
None shown. Father Thomas wanted to cast Detect Magic on his finds before the party entered the ridge temple [10], but he did not have the spell prepared [11]. Nobody has tried to identify the ring.
Open questions
- Whose initials E.V. are. The DM has tied them to no one, and nothing on screen says whether the ring belonged to the hand’s owner in life.
- Whether it is magical, and what it is made of.
- Whether the cloth came from a kidnapper’s robe.
History in the campaign
Session 21: The Hand That Points North
Main article: Session 21
Examining the hand at the chopping block, Father Thomas learned from the DM that it carried a ring with the initials E.V. and a charcoal cloth round one finger [1]. He roped the hand, wiggled the ring off it and looked it over [2]. He kept both the ring and the cloth, “I have a feeling that those might come in handy later” [3], and put them in his pocket [4]. Outside the ridge temple he dropped his plan to cast Detect Magic [10][11].
Status
As of session 23. Carried by Father Thomas, in his pocket with the charcoal cloth, and unidentified [4]. No later session mentions it.
