The Egg is the campaign’s central quest object, a dragon egg that Sevryn gave the party at the Hollow Hall Tavern in session 1, to hatch a new world dragon and so bring back the arcane energy that is fading from Eldurae [1][20]. It has taken in one hoard’s essence, Death-at-Sunset’s at the end of session 3, and turned green [74][22]. Aurelian forces took it in session 15 [21]. In session 23 the DM told the party that the man who holds it “is an Aurelian binder”, and its location is still unknown [29].

Overview

The Egg is the principal McGuffin of the campaign. Sevryn, a silver dragonborn, gave it to the party at the Hollow Hall Tavern in session 1, and told them that magic was falling apart in the world [1]. The DM’s account of it, given in session 20: arcane energy all stems from the world dragon, which is dying, and “you were given this egg by Sevryn to hatch a new world dragon to bring back arcane energies to the world”. To hatch, the egg “needs to have power, magic power”, which is why Sevryn sent the party after chromatic dragons’ hoards, since their draconic energy is still left in them [20].

The Egg has taken in one hoard’s essence so far. Aurelian forces took it in session 15, and it has not been seen since [21].

Description

A dragon’s egg, carried in Sevryn’s Egg-Carrier until it was lost. After session 3 it is green [22]. It gave off “a great deal of magic” once it had taken in the hoard [23], and the DM has said that near a hoard it “started to almost hum” within about 20 feet of the treasure [24]. The table calls it the egg McGuffin, and the DM said he quite liked it [25].

Mechanics (as played)

  • Absorbing. In session 3 the egg was carried to the hoard, vibrated in its container, and was lifted out and set beside the treasure. It swallowed the poison round the ancient dragon and drew essence out of the hoard [26].
  • What it takes. The hoard’s essence, not the dragon’s: Hugo’s reading in session 12, which the DM’s account of hoards bears out [27][20]. The DM restated it in session 23: “they need to find dragon hoards to absorb the latent magic in them into the dragon egg” [28].
  • What it does not care about. The egg “doesn’t really care” whether the energy comes from evil or good dragons [20].

Open questions

  • Who holds it and where. The DM said only that the man “is an Aurelian binder” and that binders “can sense arcane usage even more than the wards in Aurelia” [29][30]. He did not say that this man is the chain-wielder of session 15, the Aurelian chain-master, or the Aurelian Binder of session 20, and the wiki keeps those pages apart.
  • Whether Sevryn knows it was taken. What he told Kole was only that a group of adventurers was trying to use the egg to save the world [31]. Terry’s “he definitely doesn’t know then” is a player’s conclusion [32].
  • Whether a changeling’s change counts as magic to an Aurelian binder. Terry asked the DM and got no answer [33].

History in the campaign

Session 2: The Bark, the Dryad, and the Riddle that Wasn’t a Tree

The player recap that opened the session told how the party met Sevryn at the Hollow Hall Tavern, who showed them “this very mystical-looking egg” and said that magic was failing [1]. At the tree line Harvo, sent by Sevryn’s letter, gave the party his carrier for the egg, and the party put the egg in it, where its vibrations slowed [34][35][36][37]. The next morning the DM said it was “just humming along” [38].

Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley

In Sunset is Nigh’s Lair the party was told to bring the egg near the hoard and it would absorb everything [39]. It vibrated in its container, was lifted out and set beside the treasure, and swallowed the poison round the ancient dragon, drew an essence out of the hoard and turned green [40]. The party then sensed “a great deal of magic emanating from the egg” while the lair’s magic went quiet [23].

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

At Fergus’s Grill Caelumn held up the egg and restated the mission to the newly arrived Terry: defeat dragons and give their energy to the egg [4]. In the black void the Black Mask named it “the world dragon egg”, said she did not want it, and wagered that the party would succeed, with losing the egg among the ways to lose the wager [41][42]. Hugo’s pact later promised service “after the quest of the egg” [43].

Session 12: Eldwythe and the Candy Cottage

Main article: Session 12

On the way to the eastern forest and a baby dragon, Hugo reasoned that the egg had taken in the essence of the first dragon’s treasure rather than the dragon, so the party might need the baby dragon’s treasure and not its death [27]. He asked whether the egg had been drawn towards the hoard, and the DM said that within about 20 feet of the treasure it “started to almost hum” [44].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

Main article: Session 14

Hugo suggested using the egg on the young dragon Briochebane: carried through the Candy Cottage, it might pick up the essence round the dragon and finish the quest without a fight [7]. Caelumn had the egg [45], and in the cottage Terry swept towards Brioche to see whether it reacted. The DM said it did not [46][47]. The party later wondered whether Sevryn knew they had found a different dragon from the one he meant [48].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

Main article: Session 15

In the smoke outside Eldwythe a chain killed Ruin [49]. Another struck Caelumn without hurting him, and “you see your backpack get pulled into the smoke” [21]. Caelumn said at once “so this is how you wanted to get rid of the egg I see”, and the egg was among the things he listed as gone [50][51]. Hugo’s regret: “we should have put it in Terry’s shell because you can’t steal it” [52].

Session 16: Through the Sewers, Onto the Skiff

Terry said Caelumn could not be trusted to carry anything “after he lost the dragon egg” [10]. On the way out of the sewers the party weighed its options: Aurelia, to find out how to get the egg, or Sevryn, to tell him it was gone [53][54]. Hugo guessed that the man who took it had gone back to Aurelia, though it might still be in Eldwythe [55]. The party set out by skiff for the White Lantern Shrine [56][57].

Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw

Hugo told the newcomers Mike and Steven that the egg was “meant to help, like, stabilize the world tree” and that Caelumn had lost it to the Aurelians, so the party meant to steal it back [58]. Terry: “it feels better to go find the MacGuffin” than to confess to Sevryn [59]. Hugo’s devil pact kept its clause that the Mask’s commands cannot touch “the current quest” until the egg is dealt with [60].

Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road

On the road, with Mike down and the Aurelian patrol standing over him, the party argued about whether to fight. Hugo, who would not, told Caelumn that he could join Mike if he liked, but “we still do need to get the egg and we need to be alive to get the egg” [13]. The egg was the reason he gave for not throwing the party’s lives away.

Session 19: A Penitent Priest, an Unmade Leash, and the Pixie in the Dark

Caelumn explained the egg to Steven. The DM said the man who took it “was the ranking officer”, more powerful than whoever killed Mike, and that “None of you know his official title.” [61]. The party weighed a raid on Aurelia and decided it was not strong enough “for now”. The DM put it that the party had “chosen not to do the quest”, and Caelumn insisted that it had not abandoned it [62][63][64][65][66].

Session 20: The Man Who Was Always Here

Terry told Caelumn not to say too much to Father Thomas, since “If he knows the egg’s there, he’s going to be like, well, let’s go back and get the fucking egg.” [67]. When Barney asked whether the dragons were draining the world’s magic, Caelumn passed the question to the DM, who restated the egg’s purpose [68].

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

Main article: Session 23

Recapping for a new player, Caelumn said the party had “lost the dragon egg”, and the DM corrected him on what the quest needs [69]. Kole arrived saying he was “sent to assist you with the dragon egg”, and asked to see it; Caelumn told him Aurelians had taken it [17][70][71]. The DM gave Sevryn’s words to Kole, which did not say the party held the egg, and added that the man who holds it “is an Aurelian binder” [31][29]. Ideas for getting it back, an Arcanthys distraction and Kole wearing the holder’s face, were talk [72].

Status

As of session 23. Lost, and in Aurelian hands at an unknown place. Recovery is deferred, not given up [66][73]. The DM has named no custody chain; he has said only that its holder is an Aurelian binder [29].
