The Egg is the campaign’s central quest object — a chromatic-dragon-essence-absorbing artefact provided by Sevryn to the original five party members at the Hollow Hall Tavern in session 1, intended (per Sevryn’s framing) to repair the failing magic of Eldurae by sequentially absorbing the hoard-essence of chromatic dragons. The Egg absorbed the essence of Death-at-Sunset’s hoard at the end of session 3 and turned permanently green. The party never absorbed a second dragon’s essence. The Egg was stolen by Aurelian forces in s15. Its exact current location is unknown. In session 19 the party formally deferred the recovery chase — judged too weak to assault Aurelia [6], L235) — so the Egg remains lost in Aurelian hands; the ranking officer who took it outranks the patrol officer who killed Mike, and his official title is unknown to the party [4].
Overview
The Egg is the principal McGuffin of the egg-quest era of the campaign. It was provided to the original five party members (Cholmondeley, Caelumn, Hugo, Vasquez, Harvo) by Sevryn in the unrecorded session 1 at the Hollow Hall Tavern in Gloamhearth, and was carried in a bespoke contraption that Harvo had been told to build (the egg-carrier).
Its mechanism, per Sevryn, is to absorb the essence of chromatic-dragon hoards. By some process not fully explained even to him, this is meant to repair the world’s failing magic. The Egg has absorbed exactly one dragon’s essence — Death-at-Sunset’s, at the close of session 3 — and turned permanently green as a result.
Recorded interactions
- Session 1 (unrecapped). Delivered to the party by Sevryn alongside the briefing on Eldurae’s failing magic.
- Session 2. Carried into the Corrupted Redwood Grove in the egg-carrier; did not feature in combat.
- Session 3. Absorbed the essence of Death-at-Sunset’s hoard at the climax of the Sunset is Nigh’s Lair arc and turned permanently green.
- Sessions 4 through 14. Carried by the party (typically by Caelumn in his backpack) without further essence-absorption events.
- Session 15. Stolen by an Aurelian chain in the smoke during the Aurelian chain-master ambush outside Eldwythe [3]. The party did not see it leave; the chain’s grappling effect retrieved it from Caelumn’s pack as part of the same action that decapitated Ruin.
- Session 16. Confirmed lost; the party heads north toward the White Lantern Shrine partly with the goal of recovering it. The Egg was stolen by Aurelian forces in s15. Its exact current location is unknown.
- Session 19. Referenced only; not recovered. The party debated and then formally deferred the Aurelia/Egg raid, judging themselves too weak after a single patrol humbled them [6], L235). Caelumn re-explained the Egg’s purpose for the table — a dragonkin tasked the party with restoring magical essence to it by slaying evil dragons and feeding their hoards and life-essence to the good ones [7]. On who holds it, the DM clarified the Egg-taker’s standing without naming him: he “was the ranking officer,” more powerful than the person who killed Mike (himself “roughly the same rank” as Mike’s killer), and “none of you know his official title” [4]. The Egg stays in Aurelian hands; recovery is postponed, not abandoned.
Physical description
A dragon’s egg, sized accordingly. After session 3, permanently green in colouration. The egg-carrier contraption it travels in is a Sevryn-designed cage-and-strap rig. The party have not characterised the egg as warm, vibrating, or otherwise active beyond the absorption events.
Status as of session 16
Lost. The Egg was stolen by Aurelian forces in s15. Its exact current location is unknown. The party’s stated objective in sailing north is, in part, recovery.
Status as of session 19
Lost; recovery deferred. The Egg remains in Aurelian hands at an unknown location. In session 19 the party abandoned the Aurelia/Egg raid “for now” [6], L235), redirecting instead to Vel’Kris to redeem the forged Duskwatch ledger (Maelis’s Research Notes and Forged Duskwatch Ledger). Recovery is explicitly postponed, not given up — the party intend to return for the Egg once stronger. The ranking officer who took it is assessed as stronger than the patrol officer who killed Mike, with an official title unknown to the party [4]. No custody change.
