The cultist’s dagger is the rune-inscribed dagger that Kole took from the body of the pendant cultist in the ridge temple in session 23 [5][13][14]. While she lived the DM described “her rather sizable daggers glowing with necrotic energy”, and her stabs dealt slashing and necrotic damage together [21][18][20]. Asked whether it looked or felt magical, the DM said only “It definitely has runes inscribed on it, but it’s hard to tell.” [16]. It is unidentified and not confirmed magical, and the title is the wiki’s own, since the dagger has no name. In session 24 Kole pricked his finger with a dagger, presumably this one, to feed a blood-hungry statue [8].
Overview
The dagger belonged to the woman who had captured Kole and was leading him through the ridge temple to be sacrificed [9][10]. She is unnamed, and the wiki calls her the pendant cultist. She fought the party with it and died to Caelumn’s Chromatic Orb [11]. Kole, who by his player’s description “doesn’t really have any weapons by the looks of it” [12], took it from her body [13][14].
Description
A big dagger. In the fight the DM called it “her big dagger”, which she gripped with both hands for her last stab [15]. Afterwards it was “a dagger” in the DM’s list of what she carried [5]. Asked whether it looked or felt magical, the DM said “It definitely has runes inscribed on it, but it’s hard to tell.” [16]. He gave Terry the same answer, word for word, about The skeleton’s greatsword [17]. The runes have not been read.
Mechanics (as played)
- Necrotic damage. Her stabs came with extra necrotic damage: nine slashing and eight necrotic on Father Thomas, and on a natural 20 ten slashing and fourteen necrotic [18][19][20]. The DM first pictured “daggers glowing with necrotic energy” [21].
- After her death. Nothing says the blade glowed or dealt necrotic damage after she fell. In the second fight Kole is shown only casting [22][23].
- A pricked finger (session 24). Kole’s one use of a blade was on himself: he asked to “gently prick my finger with my like knife”, and said “Because I’ve got a dagger” [24][25]. The DM called one piercing damage [26]. Neither the DM nor Kole mentions runes or any glow.
Open questions
- Whether the dagger is magical. “it’s hard to tell” [16] is all the DM has said, and nobody has cast anything on it.
- Whether the necrotic glow and damage belong to the dagger or to the woman who wielded it [21][18][20].
- Whether there was a second dagger. The DM said “daggers” in the fight [21], and “a dagger” in the search [5].
- What the runes say. At the sealed door Hugo asked whether its markings matched “the runes on the dagger or the sword”, and the DM said “Uh, no.” [27][28].
- Whether the blade Kole pricked his finger with in session 24 is this dagger. His words are “my like knife” and “a dagger” [24][25], and it is the only blade on record for him [12].
History in the campaign
Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles
Main article: Session 23
The woman fought with a big dagger that the DM pictured glowing with necrotic energy. Her stab at Caelumn missed, her stab in Father Thomas’s back dealt nine slashing and eight necrotic, a natural 20 dealt ten and fourteen, and her last two-handed stab was turned by his shield [29][21][18][3][4]. Caelumn’s Chromatic Orb killed her [11]. Terry’s search of the bodies found a dagger on her, and Kole picked it up, was told that it had runes but it was hard to tell, and kept it [5][6].
Session 24: The Knight of Smoke
Main article: Session 24
The dagger is not named in session 24, but Kole’s only blade on record is this one. At the vampire-lord statue, with Kole guessing that it wanted blood, he asked to prick his finger with his knife and said he had a dagger [30][24][25]. The DM called one piercing damage, and a little of his blood trickled down the statue’s throat, but “it seems hungry” [26], and Kole thought it needed more [31]. Terry’s wrist, not the dagger, bought the orb [32][33].
Status
As of session 24. Carried by Kole, unidentified and not confirmed magical [14]. It is probably the blade he pricked his finger with at the vampire-lord statue [8].
