Sevryn’s Egg-Carrier is the humming brass-and-glass contraption that Harvo, sent to the party by Sevryn, gave them in session 2 as “a safe and well, hopefully very resilient, way of carrying around a dragon egg instead of just shoving it in the bag” [5][6]. Once The Egg was in, it began “to do a small hum” and the egg’s vibrations slowed [10]. It held the egg through the hoard of Death-at-Sunset in session 3, and went the way of the egg in session 15, when an Aurelian chain pulled Caelumn’s backpack into the smoke [13][7][8]. The title is the wiki’s own; at the table it is “the contraption”.
Overview
Sevryn’s Egg-Carrier is the contraption in which The Egg travelled from the day Harvo gave it to the party. He wore it at his side when the party met him at the tree line outside Wyrmbough Grove and handed it over as “a sign of my goodwill” [5][6]. It was lost with the egg in session 15 [7][8].
Description
A “brass-glass device” that hummed faintly, which Harvo’s mechanical hands seemed to answer with a slight vibration of their own [5]. Harvo’s instructions for it: “You just pull here, push here, put the egg in, close it up, turn it away.” [9].
Mechanics (as played)
- Steadying. With the egg inside, “the contraption start to do a small hum” and the egg’s vibrations “slow down a little bit” [10].
- Carrying. The party used it as the egg’s container from then on [11][12][3].
- Nothing else. No other property is recorded. When the egg was brought near the hoard it was seen “starting to vibrate inside the container”, and it was lifted out to do its work [13][14].
Open questions
- Whether Harvo made it. He carried it and gave it away as a goodwill gift, and the party’s records give it as his work, but no line has him say that he built it.
- Whether it was in the backpack that was taken. Caelumn said the egg was [8], and the egg had travelled in the carrier since session 2, but no line names the carrier at the loss.
History in the campaign
Session 2: The Bark, the Dryad, and the Riddle that Wasn’t a Tree
Main article: Session 2
Harvo waited at the tree line with a brass-glass device humming at his side [5]. He offered it as a goodwill gift, a safe way to carry a dragon egg, and the party, wary of handing the egg to a stranger, took the carrier and put the egg in itself [15]. The contraption gave a small hum and the egg’s vibrations slowed [10]. Checked the next morning, the egg was “just humming along” [16].
Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley
Main article: Session 3
In Death-at-Sunset’s lair one of the party took the contraption off his back and carried the egg round the poisonous mist [12]. Brought near the hoard, the egg began to vibrate inside the container, so it was lifted out and set beside the hoard, where it swallowed the poison, drew the essence out of the treasure and turned green [17]. It went back into the container afterwards [18].
Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact
Main article: Session 4
At Fergus’s Grill, with Terry newly arrived, Caelumn pulled the egg out “in its contraption” to explain the party’s next mission, to defeat dragons and give their energy to the egg [3]. The carrier plays no other part in the session.
Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins
Main article: Session 15
In the smoke outside Eldwythe a chain struck Caelumn without hurting him, and “you see your backpack get pulled into the smoke” [7]. Caelumn knew at once what it meant: “so this is how you wanted to get rid of the egg I see” [19]. He listed the egg among the things he had lost [8], and the DM told him he was not getting the pack back [20].
Status
As of session 23. Lost, presumably with the Egg, and in Aurelian hands at an unknown place. The DM’s statement in session 23 that the man who holds the Egg “is an Aurelian binder” does not mention the carrier [21].
