The Sending Stone (Broker pair) is the sending stone that The Broker handed Hugo in session 7, after paying for Maelis Dirn’s death: “If you ever need me, just press this little sending stone and it’ll give me a little bit of a ring.” [7][3]. It is a different object from the Altered Sending Stone that the Black Mask gave Hugo, which plays a recording. The party has not used it on screen; Hugo named it as the way to keep in touch with the Broker when the Aurelian assassination job came up in session 10 [14][5].

Overview

A sending stone that the Broker gave Hugo as the way to reach him [3]. It is the second sending stone in Hugo’s pack, and a different one from the stone that plays a recording of Project Veilbreak. No use of this one is recorded in play.

Description

The Broker produced it as an afterthought, answering Hugo’s question about how he could contact the party: “Oh! How foolish of me. Of course” [4][3]. His instruction was to press it, and it would “give me a little bit of a ring” [3]. That implies a matching stone on his side. Hugo later spoke of “the sending stones so we can communicate to each other” [5].

Mechanics (as played)

None shown. Pressing the stone rings the Broker, by the Broker’s account [3]. No use of it is recorded in play.

Open questions

  • Whether Hugo still carries it. It is not mentioned after session 10.
  • Whether the party will use it to take up the Broker’s work again. The Aurelian job was declined and left open for a few days [6].

History in the campaign

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

Main article: Session 7

At the Black Hollow Market the Broker paid for Maelis’s death with 50 gold, two Biogloom toxins and a greataxe for Hugo, and heard about the forged shipping papers [7][8][9]. When Hugo asked how the Broker could contact them about a cut of the papers’ value, he handed Hugo a sending stone and told him to press it if he ever needed him [4][3]. Hugo made a note of it [10].

Session 10: Ruin Joins, the Aurelian Conspiracy, the Plate Armour

Main article: Session 10

Back in Umbrafall after the quarry job, the party was paid 100 gold, and the Broker offered a 200-gold assassination in Aurelia [11][12]. Hugo asked him to hold it, saying the party might take it once its business there was done, and that the sending stones would let them keep in touch [13]. The party later declined, and the Broker left the contract open for a few more days [6].

Status

As of session 23. Carried by Hugo as far as the record shows. It has not been mentioned since session 10, and no use of it is recorded.
