The root room’s wooden staff is “a wooden staff resting on two stone brackets” behind a wall of regrowing roots in the root room of the ridge temple [1]. Father Thomas’s Thorn Whip could not pull it free, the party’s spells only showed that the roots regrow, and in the end a trail of water drew the roots off and Terry ran in and took it [14][16][19][21]. The DM has not said what it is, and the title is the wiki’s own.
Overview
The staff lay in the root room, the hidden chamber behind the swinging statue that struck Caelumn [8][1]. Roots filled an alcove at the back, and the staff could be seen “through narrow gaps” [1]. Some of the party wanted it: someone at the table, probably Hugo, said “I want this magical staff that’s mine” [9], and Father Thomas said he could use a staff too [10]. It took water to get it out.
Description
The DM’s words: “a wooden staff resting on two stone brackets” [1], beside “a lidded stone cistern” and, on a shelf, a curved knife ([1]; see The root room’s curved knife). He gave it no further description, and Kole’s “plain staff” and “walking stick” are his guesses [11][12].
Mechanics (as played)
Not read out in play. What the party tried in order to get it:
- Thorn Whip. Father Thomas cast it from ten feet or so, “to grab the staff and bring it closer” [13]. The spell failed: the hole in the roots “seems to shrink” and the vines “gently place it back onto the mantle” [14].
- Spells and bolts. Eldritch Blast, True Strike, Toll the Dead and crossbow bolts were fired at the roots [15]. The DM: “It seems to be regenerating about the same speed that you’re taking it down.” [16].
- Misty Step. Kole offered to grab it and Misty Step out [17]. The offer was not taken up.
- Water. Thrown water made the roots “hungrily go for the water” [18]. Caelumn drew a trail away from the staff, and the roots followed it, “gobbling up all the water, leaving an opening in the wall” [19]. Terry, on a readied action, ran in: “But you have the staff.” [20][21].
Open questions
- Whether it is magical. It was called “this magical staff” at the table [9] and Terry said “go go go play with the magic item” [22], against Kole’s “It’s not even magic. It’s a walking stick” [12]. The DM has said nothing, and nobody has checked.
- Who holds it. Terry took it [21]. Caelumn asked for a look, and Terry said “you take the stuff” [23][24]. Father Thomas later asked to see it [7]. No line says who carries it now.
- Why it was kept there. The DM did not say who left it behind the roots or why.
History in the campaign
Session 24: The Knight of Smoke
Main article: Session 24
The DM showed a wooden staff on two stone brackets behind the roots of the root room [1]. Father Thomas’s Thorn Whip failed to pull it out, and the party’s volley of spells showed that the roots regrew as fast as they were cut [14][3]. Water drew the roots away, and Terry ran in and came out with the staff [19][21]. Caelumn asked for a look, and Terry told him “you take the stuff” [23][24]. Father Thomas later asked to see it at the Dracolich statue [7].
Status
As of session 24. Taken from the root room by Terry; Caelumn has had a look, and the holder is not settled [21][24]. Unidentified, and not confirmed magical.
