The Greataxe of Frost +1 is a +1 magical greataxe with a cold-damage rider, gifted to Hugo by The Broker in session 7 as part of the payment for the Maelis Dirn kill. Harvo ritual-identified it during the post-fight long rest at the Glomangol Inn [2], “it seems to be a great axe of first” — transcript misspelling for “frost”). Hugo explicitly declined attunement in the same session: “I am keeping it as a generous gift, but I am not attuning to it” [1]. Despite the declined attunement, the +1 bonus and the cold rider have been applied freely in every fight from s7 onwards; whether the table treats the weapon as attuned-by-default or whether the party has been benefiting from un-attuned bonuses is an open table-mechanics question flagged in the Magic Items Index.

Overview

The Greataxe of Frost +1 is Hugo’s primary weapon from session 7 onwards. The Broker presented it alongside the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring and a sending stone as the post-Maelis-kill bonus loot, on top of the cash payment, in the Broker’s office at Umbrafall. Harvo identified it during the long rest at the Glomangol Inn — the transcript line, courtesy of D&D Beyond’s autocorrect, reads “it seems to be a great axe of first” [2], which the table moved past with “oh we already knew that because he told us he did, don’t know what it does though” [3].

Mechanics

  • +1 magical: counts as a magical weapon for resistance-bypass purposes.
  • Cold-damage rider: applies cold damage on hit, on top of the slashing.
  • Greataxe: standard 1d12 + STR martial weapon profile.

Attunement

Hugo declined attunement in s7 in clear language: “I am keeping it as a generous gift, but I am not attuning to it” [1]. No subsequent transcript line reverses the decision. In play, however, the +1 and the cold rider have been used in every fight since (most heavily in the s9 quarry combats, s11 owlbears, s13 candy goblins, s14 Gummy Mummy, s15 Aurelian patrol, and s16 sarcophagus chamber). The discrepancy between Hugo’s stated non-attunement and the freely-applied bonuses is flagged in the Magic Items Index as a Chris-confirm item.

Status as of session 16

Carried by Hugo as primary weapon. The +1 Greataxe (second one, looted s13 from the Candy Cottage tunnel skeleton) sits as backup. Both axes use the same profile; the s13 +1 has no rider.
