The Greataxe of Frost +1 is a large curved axe with fungus woven through it, which The Broker drew from a bag of holding and gave to Hugo in session 7 as part of the payment for the Maelis Dirn kill [1]. Harvo identified it that night as a great axe of frost [10], and Hugo refused to attune to it, “seeing what it does”, though he kept it “as a generous gift” [8][14]. The table never said what it does, and Hugo was not using it as his weapon by session 15 [9].

Overview

The Greataxe of Frost +1 was the Broker’s gift to Hugo in session 7, on top of the cash for killing Maelis Dirn. It is a big, magical, fungus-wrapped axe that Hugo would not attune to and has seldom been seen to swing [1][8][9]. The page name is the wiki’s: at the table it was only “a great axe of frost” [10].

Description

“A rather large curved axe covered in what looks to be fungus kind of intertwined into it magically” [11][12]. The Broker handed it over with a warning that it was sharp [13]. Hugo held it with gloves on while he was not attuned [4].

Mechanics (as played)

  • Effects. None has been read out. The bonus and the cold damage that the name suggests were not stated at the table, and Hugo’s reason for refusing it, “seeing what it does”, was not explained [8].
  • Attunement. Declined: “I am not going to attune to this axe” and “I am keeping it as a generous gift, but I am not attuning to it.” [8][14]. No later line reverses it.
  • Use. No recorded attack with it.

Open questions

  • What does the axe do, and is there a bonus? Hugo’s refusal suggests the DM told him; the table has not.
  • Which greataxe is which? Hugo also carries a +1 greataxe that Ruin identified on a skeleton in the Candy Cottage tunnel [15][16]. “The good great axe” [9] and “a plus one great axe” offered round the table [17] are not tied to either by name.

History in the campaign

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

The Broker paid for the Maelis job with 50 gold, two more Biogloom toxins and, from a bag of holding, “a rather large curved axe covered in what looks to be fungus kind of intertwined into it magically” [18]. He gave it to Hugo with a warning that it was sharp [19]. That night Hugo said, “I am not going to attune to this axe, seeing what it does,” and kept it as a gift [8][14]. Harvo identified it as a great axe of frost, and the table moved on: “don’t know what it does though” [10][20]. Running from the Nightwatch, Hugo swapped to it, holding it with gloves on since he was not attuned [4].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

In the Kuo-toa fight in the Eldwythe sewers, Hugo thought of cleaving with one of his great axes [21]. The DM pointed out that he was holding a shield, and Hugo added that he did not have “the good great axe equipped” anyway [22]. He kept to his sword. The good axe is presumably the Broker’s, but the line does not say so.

Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road

Burying Mike, Hugo asked the DM about digging with a hand axe. He had six spare ones, he said, or he could use “the massive magical great axe he gave me”, and he worried whether that would dent it [23][24]. He means the Broker’s gift, presumably.

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

During the break Hugo offered the new players some of his spare gear. He said he had offered them “great axes”, and kept his longsword and his boots back [25][26]. The Broker’s axe is not named, and no hand-over is shown.

Status

As of session 23. Carried by Hugo, as far as the record shows, and not attuned. He did not have it equipped in session 15 [9], and in sessions 21 and 22 he fights with a longsword [27][28].
