The eye-and-mouth token is “a stone token showing an eye above a closed mouth” that Caelumn found on three robed skeletons lying at a fork in the corridor of the ridge temple in session 21 [1][4]. He did not recognise it and pocketed it anyway [5][6]. Nothing more is known: no reading of it for magic is recorded, the DM has not connected it to anything else in the temple, and it is not mentioned in the sessions since.
Overview
Caelumn found the eye-and-mouth token on three robed skeletons at the first fork past the entrance of the ridge temple in session 21 [1][3]. He took it, and later also The skeleton’s whip from another skeleton [7][8]. The token has never been identified [5].
Description
A stone token that shows an eye above a closed mouth [3][4]. The DM described one token only.
Mechanics (as played)
None known. Caelumn’s Insight check to recognise it failed [9][5]. No reading of it for magic is recorded.
Open questions
- What is it for, and what does an eye above a closed mouth signify?
- Is it magical? Nobody has said.
- Is it tied to the temple’s other eye imagery? The DM tied only the carved eye above the stair to Vecna, “the god of secrets and whispers” [10][11]. The token is not linked to that, to the silver eye-and-hand amulet on a skeleton in the cell passage [12], or to the eye-patched skeleton with the whip [13].
- Were the three robed skeletons connected to the temple’s current occupants?
History in the campaign
Session 21: The Hand That Points North
Main article: Session 21
Past the temple entrance, the corridor forked at iron doors to the north and west, with “three skeletons that lie at a junction in faded robes” between them [1]. Caelumn cast Guidance on himself and searched the corpses [2][14]. The DM told him he had found “a stone token that is showing an eye above a closed mouth”, and repeated it for his character sheet [3][4]. His Insight check did not tell him what it was: “No, you don’t recognize it.” [5]. He pocketed it anyway: “it’s going in my pocket anyway” [6].
Status
As of session 21. In Caelumn’s pocket, unidentified. It is not mentioned in sessions 22 or 23.
