The Dragonslayer Longsword is a rare longsword edged with elvish runes, found rising from the hoard of Death-at-Sunset in session 3 and named by the DM “a long sword of dragon slaying” ^[1][3]; it would fit the empty scabbard of the echo of Edvan, the elf who struck the dragon’s killing blow ^[23][15]. Who holds it is disputed. Session 3 has Caelumn take it and attune to it overnight ^[2][4], but from session 6 on Hugo and the DM speak of it as Hugo’s, with no hand-over shown ^[6][8][9]. Which of them holds it is a question for the DM.

Overview

The Dragonslayer Longsword came out of the hoard of Death-at-Sunset in session 3 and has been in the party ever since. Whose it is has never been settled. Caelumn took it and attuned to it, and later lines call it Hugo’s, but nothing shows it changing hands ^[2][4][6].

Description

“A magnificent sword edged with elvish runes” ^[1]. The DM called it “a long sword of dragon slaying”, and confirmed that the item’s name is simply the Dragonslayer Longsword and that it is rare ^[3][12][13].

Mechanics (as played)

• Magic. Caelumn’s Detect Magic read it as enchantment ^[14].
• Against dragons. Hugo asked to fight more dragons so that he could use it ^[6]. The table has never said what it does to them.
• Attunement. Caelumn declared his at the long rest after the lair ^[4]. Hugo’s is not stated.
• Edvan’s scabbard. The DM agreed that the blade would fit the empty scabbard of Edvan’s echo ^[15]. Nobody says it was his sword.

Open questions

• Who holds it, and is Hugo attuned? Session 3 gives it to Caelumn ^[2][4]. From session 6 the lines that name it are Hugo’s, and no hand-over is shown. Hugo was already carrying a longsword in session 2 ^[16][17], before the hoard was found.
• What does it do against dragons?
• Does Edvan’s shade have any claim on it?

History in the campaign

Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley

Rising from the hoard was “a magnificent sword edged with elvish runes” ^[1]. Caelumn offered it to Vasquez for the killing blow, but Vasquez took a dead looter’s pistol instead ^[18][19][20]. Caelumn wrapped the sword in cloth, had Detect Magic read it as enchantment, and bagged it ^[21]. At the long rest the DM named it “a long sword of dragon slaying”, a rare item, and Caelumn said he would attune to it ^[22]. That night Harvo found the echo of Edvan, the elf who had struck Death-at-Sunset’s final blow long ago, with an empty scabbard; the DM agreed the sword would fit it ^[23][24].

Session 6: Maze of the Minotaur and the Titan

As the party shared out the storeroom loot in the Warrens, Terry remarked that Hugo was collecting all the magic items ^[25]. Hugo asked whether they could fight more dragons so that he could use “my dragon slayer sword” ^[6]. It is the first line that gives the sword to Hugo, and it follows no hand-over from Caelumn.

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

At the short rest in the tunnels under the Candy Cottage, after Ruin identified a skeleton’s +1 greataxe ^[26], Hugo offered it to Vasquez ^[27]. The DM said Vasquez’s gunblade needs a longsword, “which is why I thought you were going to take the dragon sword” ^[28]. Vasquez pointed out that the item is specifically a dragon slayer longsword, and Hugo answered, “Oh, right. I don’t take that off.” ^[29][30]. He added that he was attached to the sword now ^[31].

Session 16: Through the Sewers, Onto the Skiff

In the sarcophagus chamber beneath the sewers, Hugo raged and struck a ghoul. The DM said he killed it outright, driving his dragon-slayer longsword through its chest ^[32][8]. It is the DM’s own narration of the sword in use, and he gives it to Hugo.

Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw

Mike’s Detect Magic on the pebble Captain Stone made some of the party’s gear glow, and the DM listed “Hugo’s sword, his ring, his pockets, his shield” ^[33]. Hugo offered a +1 greataxe round the table, and when Terry grumbled that all the spare magic items ended up with Hugo, he said he could not use the axe “because I’m using the dragon slaying sword” ^[34].

Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road

Worried about Aurelian searches, with Terry calling Hugo “a walking magic armoury”, Hugo said, “I have a dragon slaying sword on me”, and hoped it would be allowed because the Aurelians hate dragons ^[35][10]. The DM replied that most arcane enchanted items would need a sanction, like paperwork, to be carried into Aurelia ^[36].

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

Main article: Session 23

During the break Hugo offered the others “any magic item apart from my long sword” ^[37]. When Father Thomas asked whether that meant “your magic longsword” was his, Hugo said he had offered “anything but the longsword”, and kept his boots too ^[38][39]. These lines do not name the Dragonslayer, and no other magic longsword of his is on record.

Status

As of session 23. Disputed. Session 3 attunes it to Caelumn, and sessions 6 to 18 have it with Hugo. In session 23 Hugo still has a magic longsword he will not give up, without a name for it. Which of them holds it is a question for the DM.
