The Dragonslayer Longsword is a rare enchantment-school longsword inscribed with elvish runes, looted from the hoard of Death-at-Sunset in session 3 [1] and attuned by Caelumn overnight at the Wyrmbough Grove inn. The DM identified it as “a long sword of dragon slaying” [1]. The blade is strongly implicated as the original weapon of Edvan, the elven hero who delivered the killing blow on Death-at-Sunset generations earlier: Harvo’s nat-20 examination of Edvan’s ghostly empty scabbard at the burial mound returned a positive shape-and-type match for the looted sword [3]. The specific damage rider (e.g. bonus dice vs dragons, advantage on saves) was not enumerated in the s3 transcript and remains the open question marked in the Magic Items Index.
Overview
The Dragonslayer Longsword is a rare-tier longsword recovered from the hoard of Death-at-Sunset at the close of session 3. The DM identified it without ceremony — “it is a long sword of dragon slaying” [1] — and confirmed the rare-tier classification a few exchanges later [4]. Detect Magic returned enchantment school. The blade carries elvish runes; its specific 5e statline (whether the +1d6 vs dragons, the advantage on saves vs dragon frightful presence, etc.) is not spelled out in the transcript and is flagged as an open data item in the index.
The Edvan link
Within minutes of the sword’s recovery, Harvo returned to the burial mound and inspected the spectral scabbard at Edvan’s side, asking the DM whether the empty sheath could fit the looted blade. The roll was a natural 20:
“If I see his scabbard, does it have the kind of shape or type that the Dragonslayer sword would fit in? assuming that I helped identify it so I know what it looks like.” “Yes, it would be.” — Harvo / DM, [5]
Edvan is the elven hero whose burial mound the party stood on at the start of s3, and who Gwen Homora [6] named as the killer of Death-at-Sunset. The implication — strongly suggested by the scabbard match and never contradicted — is that the sword passed from Edvan’s grip into Death-at-Sunset’s hoard at the time of their mutual end, and has lain there since.
Use in play
- Session 3. Looted; attuned overnight by Caelumn.
- Sessions 4-16. Carried by Caelumn as his sidearm. He is a sorcerer, so the longsword is not his primary damage source; it has been used as a melee fallback rather than a primary weapon.
Status as of session 16
Carried by Caelumn, attuned. Surviving the s15 backpack loss because it was not in the backpack — Caelumn carries the sword on his belt, separate from the lost gear.
Open questions
- Specific damage rider (the actual stat block of “long sword of dragon slaying” in this campaign’s homebrew tuning).
- Whether the sword has any latent reaction to chromatic dragons specifically, or to Briochebane (the wrong dragon, per s14).
- Whether Edvan’s shade has any claim on it.
