The Crooked Broom is a broom that Caelumn took from the rock-candy study of Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage in session 13, where “A crooked broom leans against the desk” [1]. The DM called it “a very ordinary broom” [10], and its one use in play was Terry’s: in session 14, turned to gingerbread and passing as one of the cottage’s workers, he took it off Caelumn as the prop for his cover as the floor-sweeper [23][24]. Terry had it last [15]. It has been counted among the contents of Caelumn’s backpack, which an Aurelian chain pulled into the smoke in session 15 [7], but no line puts it there.

Overview

The Crooked Broom was loot from the tower study of the Candy Cottage, taken in the same breath as the candied apple [1][8]. It is mundane as far as the DM said, and it mattered once: Terry swept with it as the cover for his and Ruin’s approach to Uncle Nibblecheek [9][4]. Where it went after that is not recorded.

Mechanics (as played)

None. The party suspected a hag or witch lived in the cottage and asked for the broom to be inspected, and the DM said only that it seemed ordinary [12]. The one thing tried with it was sweeping towards Briochebane to see whether the Egg would react, and the DM said it did not [13][14].

Open questions

  • Whose was it? The cottage is Nibblecheek’s, but nobody says the broom was his.
  • Was it in Caelumn’s backpack when the pack was taken? Terry last held it in session 14 [15], and the transcripts never put it in the pack.

History in the campaign

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

In the study up a tower stairwell, “a crooked broom leans against the desk” beside an open storybook [1]. After Caelumn took the candied apple, the DM pointed out that the furnishings and the broom were all that was left [16], and Caelumn claimed it: “And it is my broom now. Crooked broom.” [17]. Terry, sure the owner was a hag or witch, wanted it inspected, and the DM said, “It seems like a very ordinary broom.” [18]. Caelumn bagged it, relishing the thought of the owner coming home to find her things gone [19].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

Still gingerbread from the rolling-pin trap, Terry had already passed himself off to Nibblecheek as a new recruit who had been “just brushing the floors” [20]. Before he and Ruin went in, he asked who had the broom, the DM confirmed that Caelumn did, and Terry took it as his excuse: “I’m on cleaning duty” [3]. The cover held. “If he does badly, I’m just here to brush the floors, boss,” he said while Ruin talked [4], and he swept towards Brioche to test the Egg [13][14]. Later the charmed Caelumn demanded his broom back to clean with. Terry kept it: “I am brushing here.” [21][15].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

During the flight from Eldwythe an Aurelian chain pulled Caelumn’s backpack into the smoke [7], and Caelumn listed the Egg and “lots of other stuff” among the losses [22]. Nobody named the broom. Terry had last been seen sweeping with it [15], and no scene says it was in the pack. The wiki has counted it among the contents lost; whether it was is a question for Terry’s player and the DM.

Status

As of session 15. Whereabouts unrecorded. It was last seen in Terry’s hands [15], and it is counted as lost with Caelumn’s backpack [7] without a line to show it.
