The Cloak of Protection is the uncommon magic item that Terry took from the DM’s out-of-game gift of one such item to each player, made before session 11 [7][8]. The DM had seen both the Winged Boots and the cloak among Terry’s picks; Terry gave up the boots after talking to Hugo’s player, because he thought two people with them was unfair [7][9]. The cloak was never found in the story: the DM’s answer to Caelumn’s player about his own gift was “No, you just have it” [2]. Terry took it to protect his concentration, and it glowed under Mike’s Detect Magic in session 17 [4][5][6].
Overview
The Cloak of Protection is one of the uncommon magic items the DM gave his players out of game before session 11, one each. It was never found, bought or earned in the fiction [7][8][2]. Terry chose it, and Hugo took the Winged Boots and Caelumn the Bloodwell Vial.
Description
No one at the table described how it looks.
Mechanics (as played)
- Armour class. The table has not read out the item’s text. The published item adds 1 to armour class and to saving throws while attuned, and Hugo’s remark in the owlbear fight suggests the table counts it in Terry’s armour class [3].
- Concentration. Terry listed it with Warcaster and Mage Slayer, on top of Bladesinger, as the way he protects his concentration [4].
- Attunement. The published item needs it. Nobody at the table said whether Terry is attuned.
Open questions
- Is Terry attuned to it, and does the table apply the published bonuses to his saving throws?
History in the campaign
Session 11: Owlbears and the Soulbinder

The session opened with the DM asking Terry whether he had decided on his magic item, since he had seen both the Winged Boots and the Cloak of Protection among Terry’s picks [7]. Terry had talked to Hugo’s player and decided that two people with the boots was not fair, so Hugo took the boots and Terry the cloak [9][8]. Later Caelumn’s player asked whether his own gift should be introduced in the story, and the DM said, “No, you just have it” [2]. In the owlbear fight Hugo put the DM’s guess that a 19 would hit Terry down to the cloak being forgotten [3], and afterwards Terry said he had taken it to guard his concentration [4].
Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw

While Mike spent ten minutes ritual-casting Detect Magic on the pebble Captain Stone, the DM said the spell found magic coming from the party’s own gear [10][11][12]. Terry owned up: “I have a cloak of protection.” [5]. A few lines later the DM added, “And you’ll see Terry’s cloak also glow” [6]. It is the last time the table names the cloak.
