The Cap of Water Breathing is a magic item that the DM awarded, out of character, to Caelumn’s player for giving the table recap at the start of session 23: “Toby, for that brilliant recap, I’m going to give you a magic item.” [6]. The DM told him to add the cap to his sheet, and Caelumn confirmed it with “Water breathing. Yes.” [12][15]. The DM stressed that this is not his usual practice, since a recap normally earns an inspiration point [12]. Nothing else was said about the cap, and it was not worn or used in the session.

Overview

The Cap of Water Breathing did not come out of the story. It was handed to Caelumn’s player before play began in session 23, as a reward for the recap he gave the table [1][6]. Play started only afterwards [7], and the cap was not mentioned again.

The campaign has one earlier recap reward. In session 2 the DM answered a joke about a ring of wishes with “No. You can go ahead and add a Ring of Swimming.” [8][9], and in session 18 Hugo’s player recalled the practice as a thing of the past: “that was back when you still used to do random magic items for a recap” [10]. Whose ring that was is disputed; see Ring of Swimming.

Description

Only its name, and that a cap is “Like a hat” [11]. Nobody described how it looks.

Mechanics (as played)

  • The award. The DM chose the recapper with a d4 [1]. After the recap he had Caelumn’s player roll a d4, which came up a three, and then a d100 [12]. Terry’s later remark about a roll in the dice log, “not in the 19 and 3, that was earlier.”, and Caelumn’s “yeah it rolled 19” put the d100 at 19 [4][5]. What either roll selected was not said.
  • Properties. None was read out. Nobody said whether it needs attunement, and the cap was not worn or used.

Open questions

  • How does Caelumn come by a cap in the story? Nothing is narrated, and the wiki invents no find.
  • What do the d4 (3) and the d100 (19) select, and what does the cap do at this table?

History in the campaign

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

Main article: Session 23

Before play the DM rolled a d4 to pick who would give the table recap, and it fell to Caelumn’s player [1]. The recap ended “It just got rude, basically.” [13], and the DM replied, “Toby, for that brilliant recap, I’m going to give you a magic item.” [6]. Caelumn’s player asked for “the magical staff of Fireball” [14] and got a cap of water breathing. Terry heard “cab” until the DM spelled it out: “Like a hat. C-A-P” [3]. The DM added that this was not something he usually does, and that a recap normally earns an inspiration point [12].

Status

As of session 23. On Caelumn’s sheet by the DM’s out-of-character award [6][12][15]. Not worn, used or described.
