The Candied Apple with Dentures is a half-eaten candied apple with a pair of dentures clamped through the bite, which Caelumn took from the end table in the rock-candy study of Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage in session 13 [1][8]. He noted it as “definitely cursed. Do not remove dentures.” [14], and when the bubblegum halfling said that Nibblecheek had lost his teeth long ago, he suspected whose they were [10][11]. The party talked of using the teeth as leverage in session 14 but never did [15][16]. By the DM’s ruling the apple went back to Nibblecheek before Caelumn’s backpack was snatched in session 15, although it was still on his sheet in session 21 [24][17][26][27].

Overview

A pair of dentures clamped through a half-eaten candied apple, which Caelumn picked up in the tower study of the Candy Cottage in session 13, along with the Crooked Broom [1][8][9]. The cottage’s owner, Uncle Nibblecheek, “eats nothing but candy” and cannot eat without his dentures, so the party took the pair to be his [10][11]. Nothing was ever done with them in play. They were returned to Nibblecheek off screen, according to the DM.

Description

The DM described the room as curved rock-candy bookshelves, a chair, an end table and a desk “all carved from dark chocolate”, with the dentures clamped round the apple on the end table [12][1]. On inspection it seemed to be “just dentures that are stuck in this very sticky treat” [13].

Mechanics (as played)

  • The curse. “Cursed” is Caelumn’s own note, written when he took it: “definitely cursed. Do not remove dentures.” [14]. The DM did not confirm it, and no reading of the apple by Detect Magic is recorded.
  • Leverage. The halfling’s remark made the teeth a possible bargaining chip with Nibblecheek [10][11][15].

Open questions

  • Are the dentures Nibblecheek’s, and what would removing them from the apple do? Nobody tried [13][14].
  • When did Caelumn hand the apple back? Hugo places the teeth in Caelumn’s backpack in session 14 [16], and Caelumn counted the apple among his losses in session 15 [17]. The ruling that it had been returned first puts the hand-back somewhere that was not played.

History in the campaign

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

Caelumn went up a stairwell to a study in one of the cottage’s towers and found the apple on an end table, its dentures clamped round the bite [18]. He inspected it, added it to his inventory without prising the teeth out, and wrote himself a note: “definitely cursed. Do not remove dentures.” [19][8][14]. “I’ve already taken the cursed teeth with me,” he told the party [3]. Later the freed bubblegum halfling said Nibblecheek had lost his teeth long ago and could not eat without his dentures, and Caelumn cast “the most suspicious look ever” at his back pocket [10][11].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

With Caelumn and Vasquez cursed by the Gummy Mummy, the party looked for a way to win Nibblecheek’s help. Hugo floated the idea that Nibblecheek might miss his teeth and trade healing for their return, though he would not take them off Caelumn [15]. Terry thought the teeth felt like “the magic key to the secret here” [20]. Hugo said they would stay with Caelumn, in his backpack [16]. They were never produced. Nibblecheek lifted the curses when Ruin sold him the pair as workers [21][22] and surrendered when Brioche and the party beat him [23].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

An Aurelian chain pulled Caelumn’s backpack into the smoke as the party fled Eldwythe [24]. Running through the forest, Caelumn listed what had gone: the Egg, “lots of other stuff” and “my toffee apple with dentures” [17]. The DM only told him he could go to Aurelia to claim the pack [25]. The DM ruled afterwards that the apple had gone back to Nibblecheek before the snatch, so it was not in the pack. Nothing in session 14 shows the hand-back.

Session 21: The Hand That Points North

While searching three robed skeletons in the ridge temple, Caelumn sorted through his sheet and found he had “still got toffee apple with dentures in my inventory”, though he thought he had given it back [26]. The DM agreed that he had, but “forgot to remove it properly” [27]. Caelumn’s “it’s mine now can’t have it back” changed nothing [28]. It is the last time the apple is mentioned.

Status

As of session 21. Back with Uncle Nibblecheek in the Candy Cottage, per the DM; the entry on Caelumn’s sheet was left over [26][27].
