The Aurelian Paladin’s Greatsword is the weapon of the Aurelian Paladin who led the session 10 ambush in Umbrafall; the DM said it “deals extra radiant damage” [8]. The radiant burned Mharos, the demon in Vasquez, and put Vasquez down twice [9][10]. Hugo took the sword from the body, The Broker would not take it, and it went to Vasquez to experiment on for a better gunblade [2][12][5]. It has not been mentioned since.

Overview

The Aurelian Paladin’s Greatsword is the blade the unnamed Aurelian Paladin swung in the Umbrafall alley fight of session 10. The DM said the man was “just blessed by Aurelia” and that “the sword deals extra radiant damage” [8]. The radiant burned the demon Mharos inside Vasquez [9][10]. After Ruin killed the Paladin, Hugo took the sword [11][2], the Broker declined it [12], and the party agreed it should go to Vasquez to experiment on [5].

Description

The DM never described the blade beyond the glowing slash it left in the air when it struck [9]. It was found on the Paladin’s body with a heavy crossbow and his coin [3].

Mechanics (as played)

  • Radiant rider. Each hit added radiant damage to the slashing: 4 and 4 on the first two hits on Vasquez, 7 on a later one, 7 on a hit on Hugo, and 2 on a riposte at Hugo [13][10][14][15].
  • Mharos. The radiant “burned” the demon in Vasquez: “you feel Mharos burn” [9], and later “burning the demon within you” [10].
  • Identification. None is shown. Hugo asked what kind of greatsword it was [16], and his Arcana check of 4 on the sword and armour got “Yeah, no idea.” [17].

Open questions

  • Where does the radiant come from? The DM first said the sword deals it [8], but Hugo’s check, made to learn whether it came from the armour, the sword or the man, settled nothing [17].
  • Did Vasquez ever work on it? He said he might be able to “fashion a better gunblade” from it [18]. No crafting is shown, and the sword is not mentioned again.

Session 10: Ruin Joins, the Aurelian Conspiracy, the Plate Armour

The Paladin led an ambush a couple of blocks from the Broker’s office [19]. His first two swings at Vasquez each added 4 radiant, and the DM said Vasquez felt Mharos burn [13]. The sword downed Vasquez again and cut Hugo for 14 slashing and 7 radiant [20] before Ruin’s Eldritch Blast killed the Paladin [11]. Hugo took the sword and dragged the body to the Broker [2][21]. The Broker offered to take the armour, but when the sword came up he said “No, sadly not.” [22][23]. On the way back to the tavern the party agreed the sword and plate would go to Vasquez to experiment on [5].

Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw

The sword is not mentioned. The retcon that opens the session takes Vasquez and Althea out of the party, and the DM later says the Aurelians captured them [6][7]. The sword is presumed to have gone with Vasquez. Under ruling 25 he is a departed player character, not an open rescue thread.

Status

As of session 17. Presumed with Vasquez, who left play in the retcon; its whereabouts are not stated [7].
