The Whisper Coil Emporium is the small healing-potion shop beside, but not inside, Umbrafall’s Black Hollow Market, run by a dwarf who gives his name as Alston in session 11. It had opened “just last month” when the party first came in session 7 [4], and he trades cheaper potions for volunteer testers of his experimental biogloom brews. The party shopped there in sessions 7 and 11.

Overview

The Whisper Coil Emporium is a small healing-potion shop beside, but not inside, Umbrafall’s Black Hollow Market, run by a dwarf who gives his name as Alston in session 11. It had opened “just last month” when the party first came in session 7 [4], and he trades cheaper potions for willing testers of his experimental biogloom brews. The party shopped there twice, in sessions 7 and 11.

Geography and appearance

A small store next to the Black Hollow Market. The market’s own potion sellers are plentiful but expensive and deal in dangerous, high-end magic, so Hugo was pointed to the Emporium as the cheaper, safer option [5].

Layout

  • Counter: the dwarf stands behind a desk with shaved blonde hair and shifty eyes, looking around a lot [6]. Healing potions are 50 gold each [7][8], and more are fetched from behind the desk or bar [9][10].
  • Workbench: in session 11 the dwarf was busy mixing a potion and finding out what each component did [11].

Inhabitants

  • Alston: the proprietor, who did not remember Hugo from the years Hugo said he had been buying there [12].

Government / control

Run by Alston alone, as far as the party saw.

Notable features

  • Healing potions at about 50 gold each; in session 11 Caelumn got two for 49 gold each and declined to pay in his blood for a lower price [13].
  • Experimental potions, which Alston tests on volunteers in exchange for a discount or a free healing potion [14][15].

History in the campaign

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

With the party’s stock of potions used up, Caelumn asked Hugo where to restock, and he took them to the Emporium [16]. The dwarf sold healing potions at 50 gold and did not remember Hugo: he had opened just last month [7][12]. To bring five potions down from 250 gold to 150, Vasquez drank an experimental biogloom potion that made him shed glowing bubbles [17][18]. Harvo then traded a bottle of mushroom and creature samples from the Warrens for all five potions, which the DM called a rip-off of the shopkeeper [19]. The party walked out into the Nightwatch street fight [20].

Session 11: Owlbears and the Soulbinder

The party came back after a two-to-three-hour walk across the city, having failed to buy cheaply at Starpoint Secrets [21]. The dwarf was mixing a new potion [11]. Ruin drank a thick bluish one for a free healing potion and was paralysed for about ten minutes, then left with a level of exhaustion [22]. A concentrated biogloom brew was declined [23], and Caelumn bought two healing potions at 49 gold each [13]. On parting, the dwarf named himself Alston and handed over an untested black potion [24].

Status

As of session 23. Not revisited since session 11. The black potion went into Caelumn’s pack [25]. Whether the “random black potion” Caelumn mentions in session 19 [26] is the same one is not stated.
