The Still Current Inn is the masked, murmuring inn at Mirestrand, where every guest wears a plain reed mask and speaks in whispers, and where spies and go-betweens are known to stay. The party spent one night there in session 4, when The Black Mask, disguised as a dwarf in a helmet, sat at their table and took Hugo, Caelumn and Terry into a black void [26]. It has not been seen since.

Overview

The Still Current Inn is the masked, murmuring inn at Mirestrand: every guest wears a plain reed mask and speaks in whispers, and Hugo knew it as a relatively safe place where spies and go-betweens stay [4][5][6][7]. The party spent one night there in session 4, and it was there that The Black Mask, disguised as a dwarf in a helmet, first approached Hugo [8]. It has not been seen since.

Geography and appearance

The inn sits half sunk at the bend of a choked channel, on stilts blackened with algae, and its main room is a creaking platform built over the water, with lanterns glowing dimly through the fog [9]. The smell of ale and stew, mixed with fog, meets visitors as they approach [10].

Layout

  • Door: a sign says guests must wear a mask or veil inside, and a small basket of plain reed masks is offered at the door [5].
  • Main room: the platform over the water, full of patrons who all speak in a murmur, among them a half-giant woman with two orcs in one corner and a halfling talking with a masked human [6]. Anyone who raises a voice draws the scorn of every patron [11].
  • Bar: a barmaid takes orders for rooms and drink: marsh wine, fog brew, a clear filtered spirit called red whisper, eels, reed cakes and marsh mussels [12]. Five rooms cost five gold [13].
  • Rooms: an individual room for each guest, up the stairs [14].

Inhabitants

  • The barmaid: she gave Hugo a knowing nod through her mask, as if she half recognised him [15].
  • Patrons: masked and murmuring. The inn has a custom of banging a drink down on the table three times, after which everyone drains their glass [16].
  • The Black Mask: a dwarf in a special mask, “pretty much a helmet”, who sat at the party’s table once the bar had emptied [8].

Government / control

No owner is named. The house rules are the mask custom and the murmur [5][11].

History in the campaign

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

Hugo took the party to the inn in the evening as the safe place where he usually stayed [4]. He booked five rooms and stood the party red whispers and marsh wine, murmuring throughout [17]. Late, with the bar emptied, a dwarf in a helmet sat down and offered spell scrolls and a wager [18][19]. When Hugo declined, he took Hugo, Caelumn and Terry to a black void and gave his name as the Black Mask [20][21]. He played Hugo a recording of Project Veilbreak [22] and returned them to the inn with the dwarf gone [23]. A crow pecked at Caelumn’s window as he went up to bed [24].

Status

As of session 23. Not revisited. The party left Mirestrand for Umbrafall the next morning [25].
