The Sapphire Sea is the enclosed body of water adjoining the continent of Eldurae at the mouth of the Greywater River near Velkris — confirmed in session 17 to be the sea between Eldwythe and Aurelia, with Velkris controlling the only sea-to-ocean exit [3]. The party crossed it for the first time in sessions 16-17 on a small skiff bound south from the Eldwythe sewer outflow toward the White Lantern Shrine. The sea is patrolled by Aurelian vessels [2] and capable of being a kill-zone for any escaping ship (Mike and Steven’s ship was sunk somewhere on it before s17, [1]. A localised cold-water frost-zone in the southern stretch contains Rimeclaw Skulker and “water wolf” fauna unlike anything seen further north [4].

Overview

The Sapphire Sea is the campaign’s named coastal sea — an enclosed basin between Eldwythe (north) and Aurelia (south), narrowing at Velkris (east) into the Greywater River and out into the wider ocean beyond. Per Terry’s in-character read of the map at [5]“the only way in and out to this from the ocean is through velcro [Velkris]” — and the DM’s affirmation (“That is why … Velcro [Velkris] is probably one of the most rich nations”, [6], Velkris’s choke-point control of the sea-to-ocean exit is canonical and is the structural basis for Velkris’s mercantile wealth.

The party crossed the Sapphire Sea for the first time in sessions 16-17, taking a small skiff south from the Eldwythe sewer outflow toward the White Lantern Shrine — roughly three days of sailing per the DM’s estimate at [7]. The Shrine is on Aurelia’s north entrance [8], making the party’s voyage a long north-south coastal traverse along the sea’s western shore.

Aurelian naval presence

The sea is patrolled by Aurelian vessels. Two on-screen pieces of evidence confirm this:

  • The wreckage of a full Aurelian-sunk ship was found drifting on Day 1 of the party’s voyage [1], with white-beneath-the-salt hull and half-scorched golden-sunburst sailcloth. The DM explicitly framed this as the Aurelians having “chased you down and … sunk the ship that you tried to escape on” [9]. Mike and Steven were the only survivors.
  • A coastal patrol-boat’s lanterns were spotted to the west during Steven’s first watch on Night 1 of the voyage [2], tracking what looked like a search route. The patrol did not engage.

Both pieces of evidence are consistent with the s14 Eldwythe occupation: Aurelia projects force across the sea as readily as it occupies coastal towns.

The cold-water frost-zone (southern stretch)

In the southern stretch of the Sapphire Sea, on Day 2 of the party’s voyage, the temperature dropped, thin frost-plates drifted across the water, and the skiff entered a localised cold-water reef line. The DM’s narration [10]:

“as you kind of keep on sailing south the second day turns colder not winter cold but … thin plates of frost drift across the water and melt against the side of the skiff” — Nick (DM), [10]

The frost-zone is localised — Aurelia is not a cold-climate city, and the sea further north is temperate. Within the frost-zone, the campaign has encountered:

  • The Rimeclaw Skulker (a.k.a. Reef Stalker), a large frost-and-claw monstrosity with a frost-breath line attack [11].
  • A pack of water wolves, medium quadrupedal swimmers with luminous purplish-blue blood [12] that the table immediately compared to Hugo’s Voidforged biology. The DM has not confirmed any genealogical link; the visual echo is canonical, the causation is not.

Whether the frost-zone is a natural feature, a magical artefact, or an Aurelian-engineered defensive boundary is unconfirmed.
