Phil’s Bakery is a loaf-shaped bakery in Eldwythe run by the dwarf Phil Flowerforge, a former brigand whose pastries are “toasted with dragon’s fire” [4]. The party traced a half-eaten cinnamon roll there in session 12, and Phil confessed to raising the young dragon Briochebane behind closed doors. In session 14 it was a safe house in the Aurelian-occupied town that the party never reached.

Overview

Phil’s Bakery is a bakery in Eldwythe shaped like a giant loaf of white bread, run by the dwarf Phil Flowerforge, a former brigand. Its pastries are “toasted with dragon’s fire”, which Phil gets by raising the young dragon Briochebane behind closed doors [4]. In session 12 the party traced a half-eaten cinnamon roll from the fire at Edith’s Confectionery to the shop and heard Phil’s confession. They never went in again: in session 14 it was a safe house they could not reach.

Geography and appearance

From the street it is plainly a bakery, because the whole building is “shaped like a loaf” [5], a plain white loaf to the DM’s mind [6]. A brass bell rings whenever someone enters [5]. On arrival the party was told it lay a bit further into the town and down to the left [7]; the DM later put it “sadly near the middle of the city” [8].

Layout

  • Shopfront: a door with a brass bell, from which a small halfling woman came out with a bag of fresh baked goods as the party arrived [9][10].
  • Shop floor: a small window lets sunlight onto flour-dusted loaves and golden pastries on maple shelves, with a counter and the smell of fresh bread [11].
  • Kitchen: Phil came out of it with a tray of cinnamon rolls [11]. The method behind the rolls is his “trade secret” [12].
  • Where the dragon was kept: “behind closed doors” and, as it grew, harder to keep indoors [4]. The party was not shown the place.

Inhabitants

  • Phil Flowerforge: a dwarf with bushy eyebrows and a clean-shaven face, owner and baker [11].
  • Briochebane: the young reddish dragon Phil kept in secret, missing for a couple of days when the party arrived [4][13].

Government / control

Owned and run by Phil Flowerforge. He sold sixty to eighty cinnamon rolls a day [14], and told the party he would fund Edith’s rebuilding anonymously if his dragon had started the fire [4].

History in the campaign

Session 12: Eldwythe and the Candy Cottage

Tracking the half-eaten cinnamon roll found at the fire, the party followed directions to a bakery shaped like a loaf, with a bell on its door [7][5]. Phil said he knew nothing of the fire. A 20 on Caelumn’s Insight showed that he was withholding something, and when Caelumn bared the glowing dragon scales at his throat Phil confessed [15][16]. He had escaped his last heist as a brigand with a dragon egg, funded the bakery with the coin and raised Briochebane in secret. He offered 100 gold in all to bring the dragon back, and a sack of warm cinnamon rolls, Brioche’s favourite, to coax it [17][18]. Ruin stayed behind and took 20 gold up front and a dozen rolls [19].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

The bakery is not entered, but it shapes the party’s plans. Coming back with Brioche, Hugo proposed slipping into Eldwythe at nightfall and sleeping in the baker’s house, which would be “almost guaranteed to be safe” [20][21]. They found the town under Aurelian banners, every exit covered and everyone searched, and the DM told Hugo that the bakery lay “sadly near the middle of the city” [22][23]. The party decided to rest outside the town and see in the morning [24]. The plan was to send the boy they were returning in to tell the baker what had happened [25][26], and to tell Brioche he could not go home yet [27].

Status

As of session 23. Not seen or named after session 14. Phil left Eldwythe in session 15, when he got the party out of an Aurelian standoff with a smoke bomb and led them into the sewers [28][29]. By session 20 the market was open again and wardens stood at the street corners [30], but what became of the bakery is unknown.
