The Nightwatch Jail is the corrupt Umbrafall city-guard holding facility. Vazquez was held here briefly between sessions 7 and 8 after intervening in the Risa/urn shakedown outside the Whisper Coil Emporium. He was released on a 150gp under-the-table bribe negotiated by Harvo [2]; the official price was 500gp. His cellmate Jack gave him the prison name “Bruise” after mishearing “Cruz” [1].

Overview

The Nightwatch Jail is the Umbrafall city-guard’s holding facility, located somewhere between the Black Hollow Market district and the lower-fog district Wane Quarter. The institution is openly corrupt; the front-desk clerks list bribery rates as part of their job.

Geography and appearance

Humid, moist, cellar-like. Corroded bars on the cells. A long front desk in the office staffed by clerks who keep the day-log in plain ink. Inmates eat rats. The official log entry for Vazquez reads “bitch-ass elf” [3].

Government / control

The Nightwatch. Specifically, in s8: clerks Jorin and Harak at the front desk, who took 75gp each (150gp total, down from 100gp each negotiated, and 500gp official) for a clean off-record release.

History in the campaign

  • Session 7 (end): Vazquez is arrested after the Whisper Coil Emporium street fight; the rest of the party flees. He is dragged off to the cell.
  • Session 8: Vazquez wakes to a guard’s “teach you mess with Nightwatch business” and a faceful of cold water. His cellmate Jack mishears “Cruz” as “Bruise” and Vazquez is renamed. After negotiation, Harvo (in plain civilian disguise) walks into the front office and bribes Jorin and Harak. Vazquez is led out, gear dumped on the floor.
