The Nightwatch Jail is the corrupt Nightwatch holding house in Umbrafall, a damp stone building at the end of a narrow alley. Vasquez was held there after the street fight outside the Whisper Coil Emporium and released in session 8, when Harvo bribed the clerks with 150 gold against an official price of 500 [11][26]. His cellmate Jack never named him: the DM first heard “Cruz” as “Bruce”, and Terry coined the prison name “Bruise” [24].

Overview

The Nightwatch Jail is the Nightwatch’s holding house in Umbrafall, a damp stone building at the end of a narrow alley, and openly corrupt: the clerks at its front desk will release a prisoner for the official price or for a cheaper one under the table. Vasquez was held there after the street fight outside the Whisper Coil Emporium and freed in session 8. It has not been seen since.

Geography and appearance

The jail squats at the edge of a narrow alley, pressed between leaning buildings, its stone walls black with moisture and veined with faint violet fungus [4]. Nobody lingers there unless they must, even in Umbrafall [4]. Hugo knew only its outside and main entrance, because he avoided the area [5].

Layout

  • Alley and door: a single iron lantern burns low above the door, and two guards loiter outside, one scraping biogloom residue off his boots; the iron door stands slightly ajar and a slow drip sounds from within [4].
  • Front office: steps rise to a raised platform with a long desk and two guardsmen waiting in an enclosed room [6]. The day’s arrests are written in a log kept at the desk, and Vasquez’s entry reads “bitch-ass elf” [7].
  • Back room and cells: a back door leads to the cell block [8]. Vasquez’s cell was humid and cellar-like, with corroded bars [9]. On the way out the clerk led him past four figures at their dinner plates [10]. His armour and weapons were kept in the back and thrown on the floor on release [11][12].

  • Jorin and Harak: the two clerks at the front desk [13].
  • Jack: the spindly human in a corner of Vasquez’s cell, who recommended the rats [14].

Government / control

Run by the Nightwatch. The clerks quoted 500 gold as the official price of release, with a clean record included, and settled for 150 gold under the table, 75 each [11][15][16]. They warned that if Vasquez meddled again he would “get the noose” [17].

History in the campaign

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

The jail is not seen, but it is where the street fight outside the Whisper Coil Emporium ends. Two Nightwatchmen were taking an urn from a frightened woman, the party stepped in, and Vasquez, downed in the fight, was struck down again when Hugo healed him and left in the guards’ hands [18][19]. The others scattered. Terry suggested a jailbreak [20], the table weighed it against hiring a lawyer [21], and Caelumn settled on “We’ll do jailbreak” [22].

Session 8: Bruise the Cellmate, the Succubus, and the Quarry Ghosts

Vasquez woke in the cell, splashed with cold water and warned off Nightwatch business [9]. His cellmate Jack asked whether he liked chicken, since the rats sometimes taste like it [23]. When Vasquez gave his name as Cruz the DM first heard “Bruce”, Hugo corrected him, and Terry declared that he now had a prison name, “Bruise” [24]. Outside, the others scouted the jail [25], and Harvo went in alone. The clerks offered release for 500 gold, then took 150 under the table [11][26], and Vasquez walked out into the rain [27].

Status

As of session 23. Not revisited since session 8. The party has not been back to the jail, and neither the clerks nor Jack have reappeared.
