The Greywater River is the only inland waterway from the Sapphire Sea for hundreds of miles, controlled at its mouth by Velkris. World-brief canon. Stone towers flank both riverbanks at the mouth; black-sailed Velkris patrol ships drift the channel between them; heavy chains hang below the water’s surface, ready to rise and block ships that refuse inspection. The three named Velkris taxes — the River Passage Levy, the Current Tithe, and the Breathing Tax — all derive from the city’s grip on this river. The river is the campaign’s single most important inland-trade artery; almost every commercial reference to Velkris is implicitly a reference to the Greywater.
Overview
The Greywater River is the spine of the inland trade network in Eldurae — the only navigable waterway from the Sapphire Sea up into the continental interior for hundreds of miles. Velkris sits across its mouth where the sea narrows, and taxes everything that passes. The world brief gives the river its colour (grey) without elaboration; functionally, it is the artery through which a substantial fraction of the region’s inland commerce moves.
Geography
A wide river at the mouth — wide enough for the Velkris stone towers to anchor a defensive line on both banks, for black-sailed patrol ships to work the channel between them, and for heavy submerged chains to be raised across the full width when the city decides a ship is not entering. Inland, the river presumably narrows; it remains navigable far enough to support trade-network references that reach the Mirestrand marshes and beyond. The full upriver geography is not yet on the wiki; the party has not travelled the river, and the world brief does not enumerate the upriver polities.
Duskwatch, Velkris’s major coastal port, sits on the sea side of the river-mouth fortifications; the Duskwatch shipping ledger the party recovered from Maelis Dirn in s6 names Duskwatch as the route to Velkris.
The river-mouth defences
The river-mouth is the most heavily fortified point in any of the Velkris-controlled territories. The standing defensive arrangement, per the world brief:
- Stone towers flank both banks, providing observation, missile cover, and signal staging.
- Black-sailed patrol ships work the channel between the towers, intercepting incoming vessels for inspection.
- Submerged chains anchored across the riverbed can be raised to block ships that refuse inspection.
The chains are the city’s signature defensive instrument. They are not raised routinely — to do so would halt all river commerce — but the credible possibility of raising them is the reason inspection is treated as non-optional.
Government / control
Velkris, via the Council of Factors and the Order of the Veil, controls the river-mouth and the immediate downstream stretch. Upriver, the river presumably flows through other polities that have not yet been named on the wiki. The Velkris taxes — River Passage Levy (cargo weight and destination), Current Tithe (transit fee), Breathing Tax (daily warehouse storage) — are charged on traffic that enters the river-mouth zone; the upriver tax structure is unknown.
In-campaign references
The river itself has not appeared on-screen. References to it are oblique:
- Session 6 — The Duskwatch shipping ledger recovered from Maelis Dirn describes a trade route routing goods through Duskwatch (sea-side) to Velkris (river-mouth side). The ledger is the party’s most concrete documentary contact with the river network.
- Session 4 — The masked Veil tax-agents observed in Mirestrand (a Velkris vassal village) are downstream-of-Velkris extensions of the same tax regime that the river-mouth enforces.
Status as of session 16
Active and unvisited. The Greywater River continues to be the dominant inland-trade artery of the region. The party has not yet sailed the river or crossed the river-mouth defences. The s16 route-choice puts Velkris (and therefore the Greywater) on the table as a destination.
