The Grand Exchange is the central market of Velkris — a sprawl of plazas, covered markets, auction stages, moneychangers, food smoke, animal pens, pleasure houses, legal desks, gambling rooms, and shouting merchants. Almost anything can be bought somewhere in the Exchange, if the buyer has coin, credit, or something worse to trade. World-brief canon; the party has not yet visited.
Overview
The Grand Exchange is the heart of public trade in Velkris. The world brief describes it as a sprawl of plazas, covered markets, auction stages, moneychangers, food smoke, animal pens, pleasure houses, legal desks, gambling rooms, and shouting merchants. The Exchange is where Velkris’s reputation as the city where “almost anything can be bought” earns its truth.
The Exchange is not a single building but a district. Plazas anchor it; covered halls fill out the spaces between; smaller specialised markets cluster at the edges; brothels, gambling rooms, and legal offices line the approach streets. The trade is partly visible (the open plazas, the cried-out auctions) and partly arranged (the covered desks, the back-room contracts, the registered placements). The visible trade is louder; the arranged trade is the larger.
What is bought and sold here
The catalogue is, by design, broad:
- Cargo — raw materials, food, textiles, finished goods, foreign imports.
- Money — currency exchange (moneychangers’ tables), inter-city letters of credit (most via House Orlan correspondents), short-term loans, and informal credit instruments.
- Animals — livestock, mounts, working animals, and the occasional exotic curiosity.
- People — yes. The pleasure houses are on the Exchange’s edges; the Marr placement offices have visible desks here for upper-district household contracts; the lower-district pens are not on the Exchange itself but are walking distance.
- Information — discreet, expensive, and not on any catalogue. Buyers ask a moneychanger they trust, who points them at a legal desk, who suggests a private conversation.
- Force — Brask contracts can be initiated at the Exchange’s legal desks.
- Reagents — the Tallow apothecary plaza is part of the Exchange district; raw alchemical supply moves through here.
- Magic services — registered spellworkers operate from licensed desks under Veil oversight; unregistered work is available in the back streets at higher prices.
- Gambling — multiple registered houses; the city’s officially tolerated games are concentrated here.
Caveat: almost anything
The phrase “almost anything can be bought” in the world brief is exact in two ways:
- Almost everything has a price. The honest exceptions are few.
- Almost anything is not everything. The Exchange is not where the most sensitive Velkris trade happens. The Duskwatch shipping ledger would not be sold in the open plazas; it would be sold at Silent Intake near the Talking Skulls entrance, and the proceeds would be banked discreetly. The Exchange is the public face of Velkris commerce, not its private one.
Atmosphere
Crowded, loud, varied. The world brief evokes a sprawl where dockhands, pearl merchants, refugees, spellworkers, mercenaries, priests, smugglers, scribes, sex workers, bonded labourers, nobles, and foreign envoys all move through the same streets, though not always through the same doors. Food smoke from the cookstalls; the lowing of animals; auction-stage shouting; the steady clatter of moneychangers’ tables; the muffled hum of the covered halls.
In-campaign references
None. The Grand Exchange has not appeared in any transcript and is not named in any in-fiction dialogue through session 16. It is a world-brief location.
Status as of session 16
Unvisited. The Grand Exchange continues to be the central public market of Velkris. The party has had no contact with the Exchange or with the merchants who work it.
