The Grand Conflux Spire is the central tower of Arcanthys — a colossal nexus of crystal and adamantine that anchors the city’s floating platforms and bends reality itself as its final defence. World-brief canon. The Spire is the physical anchor of the Grand Conflux, the reality-warping apparatus the city unleashed against Aurelia’s Nullstone Constructs during the War of Fractured Heavens (582-589 A.I.). Within its mirrored halls, scholars study secrets said to grant power over time and space — knowledge that could one day lift Arcanthys beyond the mortal world forever. The Spire is under the personal custodianship of Archmagister Vylarine Thael. Unvisited.

Overview

The Grand Conflux Spire is the central tower of Arcanthys and the most load-bearing single structure in the entire city — literally and magically. The DM’s world brief gives it three binding properties:

  • It is a colossal nexus of crystal and adamantine.
  • It anchors the floating platforms of Arcanthys.
  • It bends reality itself as its final defence.

The party has not visited Arcanthys and has not seen the Spire directly. What the brief describes is the Spire’s institutional role and the broad shape of what it contains.

Function

Anchor for the floating city

The same magic that holds Arcanthys aloft — the colossal enchanted chains that bind the marble platforms to the bedrock far below — terminates, at the upper end, in the Spire. The Spire is the city’s anchor point: its structural and arcane keystone. The brief is explicit that destroying or destabilising the Spire would risk collapsing the floating platforms, the political fact behind the War of Fractured Heavens stalemate. Aurelia could not destroy the Nullstone Constructs embedded in the city without risking a Spire collapse that would bring Arcanthys down on top of its own invasion force.

The Spire is therefore both the city’s heart and its leverage. Anyone who controls the Spire controls Arcanthys’s altitude.

Reality-bending final defence

The Spire is also the physical seat of the Grand Conflux, the reality-warping apparatus that is the city’s last-resort defence. Where the Conflux itself is the magical phenomenon — the warping, the mirrored illusions, the shifting streets — the Spire is the hardware that focuses and projects it. During the War of Fractured Heavens, it was the Spire that the Grand Conflux worked through to trap entire Aurelian battalions in mirrored illusions and reshape Arcanthys’s streets around the invaders.

The Spire’s standing condition is to remain sealed against use at this scale. The Conflux unleashed in full is the city’s nuclear option, drawn at the cost of the city’s structural stability.

Geography and appearance

Crystal and adamantine. The brief specifies the two materials: crystal as the visible body, adamantine as the structural reinforcement. The Spire is colossal — larger than any of the floating platforms it anchors, and visible from any point in the city by implication. Within its body are the mirrored halls — the chambers that house the Spire’s scholar-cohorts and, presumably, the Conflux’s working apparatus.

The full floorplan, district structure, and access procedures of the Spire are unenumerated in the brief.

What is studied within

Within the mirrored halls of the Spire, scholars study secrets said to grant power over time and space — the brief frames their work as the project that could one day lift Arcanthys beyond the mortal world forever. The phrasing is striking: not “destroy mortality” or “transcend the body” (the personal phrasing the brief reserves for Archmagister Vylarine Thael), but lifting the entire city out of the mortal frame.

The relevant adjacent canon is that Sevryn is canonically a chronurgy wizard — the school of time-bending wizardry — and chronurgy of the kind the brief implies is a plausible product of the Spire’s scholar-cohorts. Whether Sevryn was trained here is unconfirmed.

Government and custody

The Spire is under the personal custodianship of Archmagister Vylarine Thael, ruler of Arcanthys. The custodianship is title-bound to the Grand Conflux — Vylarine is the custodian of the Grand Conflux, and the Spire is the Conflux’s physical seat. The brief gives no other named office-holder inside the Spire.

Status as of session 16

Unvisited. World-brief canon, no on-screen reference. The Spire is the structural and magical centre of Arcanthys and the keystone of the War of Fractured Heavens stalemate.
