Fergus’s Grill is the small eating house of the butcher Fergus in Wyrmbough Grove, with a small bed and breakfast of rented cottages attached [5][4]. The party ate there through the first quest, rented a cottage at five gold a night, and had the wyrmling Sunset is Nigh cooked there, a meal that gave each of them five temporary hit points [20][8][23]. It is also where Gwen Homora handed over the poison-resistance potions and where Earthwing joined the party [26][39].

Overview

Fergus’s Grill is “a small eating establishment” owned by Fergus himself [4], in the elven town of Wyrmbough Grove. Gwen Homora told the party that he also runs “a small bed and breakfast” [5]. Pretty much the whole town came to eat his meat [6]. It was the party’s base for the opening quest: they ate steak and ribs there, slept in his cottage, and on the last evening had him cook the dragon they had killed [7][8].

Geography and appearance

The grill sits in the town and announces itself by smell: the DM had “the scent of Fergus’s grill” reach the party before they saw it [9]. Fergus cooks at an open grill and slams steaks on plates [10]. The cottages are “just over yonder” from it [11].

Layout

  • The grill. Fergus’s cooking place and eating room, crowded at supper with the town [6]. On the morning the party left, Fergus was cleaning the grill for the day’s customers, and warming it for a special request took about fifteen minutes [12][13].
  • The cottage. A small cottage for rent, snug but big enough for the whole party [14]. Its door opens to the password “friend” [11]. The party slept there after sessions 2 and 3 [15][16].
  • The backyard. Open ground by the cottage where Harvo tested his improved gun at eight in the morning [17].

Inhabitants

Fergus, voiced by the DM as a very camp Zeus with Russell Crowe’s Greek accent [18]. He calls everyone baby, presses his meat on the whole party, and does not take no for an answer:

Notable features

  • The cottages. Five gold for the night [20][21].
  • The dragon meat. Fergus cooked the wyrmling for the town, saved eight portions for the road (“it’s gonna get a bit chewy”) and picked the skull clean for Hugo [22]. Each portion gave five temporary hit points when eaten [23][24].

History in the campaign

Session 2: The Bark, the Dryad, and the Riddle that Wasn’t a Tree

The party came to the grill at sunset, after selling its loot, led there by the scent of the cooking [9]. Fergus served steak and ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy, made Vasquez take his steak medium whatever he asked for, and offered a snug cottage for five gold a night [25]. Gwen arrived with five vials of poison-resistance potions and no idea how long they would last [26]. Caelumn was given the cottage’s password and paid the five gold [27]. The party split the bandits’ coin, slept and levelled up, and found Harvo testing his gun in the backyard at eight [28].

Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley

That evening Hugo asked Fergus to cook the wyrmling for the town and to save eight portions for the road, which Fergus warned would be chewy by then [29]. He also took the meat off the skull and left it intact for Hugo, “a bit dark, but sure” [30]. Each of the party got a plate of dragon beef, Hugo got his clean skull with its teeth intact, and Vasquez arrived with his new gunblade [31]. Earthwing, an owl in a rice hat, sat down across the table and was taken on by the party [32].

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

The session began at the grill, with the wyrmling eaten and everyone taking five temporary hit points from it [23][33]. The party slept in the hut it had rented from Fergus [16]. Next morning Hugo found him cleaning the grill, out of meat until evening, and asked, as it was his last morning in town, for a portion of dragon meat to be warmed up. Fergus did it, served it with “Well, here you go, savior of Wyrmbough.”, and Hugo took five more temporary hit points [34].

Status

As of session 23. Active, and not visited since session 4. At the table “Fergus’s meat” has lived on as a running joke [35][36][37][38].
