Notable forThe border crossing out of Aurelia; the party crossed on Laura Bennett's manifest

The Eldwythe Bridge is the Aurelian border checkpoint at the southern end of a bridge spanning a large unnamed channel south of Eldwythe town. At dawn in session 20 the party found it hung with white Aurelian banners, canvas awnings and long wagon queues, its guards searching carts, checking papers and asking heresy-screening questions before letting travellers cross [1], L417, L539-551). The party passed by hiring on as guards to the merchant Laura Bennett, who put their names on her manifest, and thereby “left Aurelia” [5]. The checkpoint remains Aurelian-held even though the town of Eldwythe beyond it is now free of the occupation [2], L553).

Overview

The Eldwythe Bridge is a fortified Aurelian border-control post at the southern end of a bridge that spans a large, unnamed channel on the southern approach to Eldwythe town. The party reached it at sunrise after abandoning their interrupted rest and marching north through open farmland [1]. It is the gateway out of Aurelia: crossing it, the DM confirmed, means the party “have left Aurelia” [5].

The checkpoint reads as an active occupation apparatus. White Aurelian banners hang from the bridge, guards search carts beneath white canvas awnings, and wagons wait in long lines to be inspected before crossing, with a separate freight lane on the right for cargo [1], L417). Guards check papers, open the occasional crate, and wave most travellers through after a handful of questions.

Crossing on Laura’s manifest

Rather than risk a search, the party hired on as caravan guards to the merchant Laura Bennett, whose lead wagon carried a “guards wanted” board for the Eldwythe-to-Umbrafall run [2]. Laura put their names on her manifest and vouched for them to the checkpoint clerk [6]. At the gate the clerk questioned Caelumn in turn: his name, where he was coming from, where he was going, why he was leaving Aurelia, whether he carried restricted goods, and whether he had ever been in contact with a heretic. Caelumn answered the last with a technically-true account of the execution the party had merely witnessed, and the clerk waved the entire caravan through [3].

An Aurelian gate to a freed town

The checkpoint’s most important feature is an asymmetry the article should not flatten. The border gate on the channel’s southern end is still firmly Aurelian, with its banners, awnings, inspections and heresy questions intact, but the town of Eldwythe on the far side is no longer under occupation. Even from the queue the party could see that “the Aurelian banner seems to be gone from the town itself” [2]. Past the crossing the town shows the marks of an ended occupation, replaced doors, pale squares where notices were torn from the walls, a reopened market, and local wardens at the corners who pointedly do not help the soldiers on the bridge [4]. The gate holds even as the town beyond it has thrown off Aurelian rule.

Status as of session 20

Active and Aurelian-held. The party crossed it once, northbound out of Aurelia, and continued along the Umbrafall road; the channel it spans is unnamed. Its guards received no help from Eldwythe’s own wardens, a sign that the checkpoint is increasingly an outpost on hostile ground.
