Eldwythe is the small self-sufficient village between Umbrafall, Arcanthys, and Aurelia where the candy-cottage arc was set (sessions 12-14) and the Aurelian persecution arc began (sessions 14-16). Timber houses, mossy steep roofs, smoke from stone chimneys, axes thudding beyond the tree line — practical, direct, and politically uninvolved until the Aurelian forces occupied it in less than a day in session 14, posting wanted posters of all five party members at the gates [3]. The party fled into the Eldwythe sewers in session 15 under Phil Flowerforge’s smoke-bomb cover.

Overview

Eldwythe is the village at the road junction between Umbrafall, Arcanthys, and Aurelia (the exact compass bearings from the village are not yet pinned down on-screen; what matters is that Eldwythe sits where the routes to all three meet). It is small, self-sufficient, and politically uninvolved — the kind of place that bakes its own bread and asks no questions, until the Aurelian forces decided otherwise.

The party spent two and a half days here. They arrived in session 12 to find Edith’s Confectionery burning at the tree-line, saved the confectioner Edith Applegarth, traced the cinnamon-bun trail to Phil’s Bakery and the dwarf baker’s confession that he had raised a small red dragon called Briochebane from a stolen egg, followed a candy-trail east to the Candy Cottage, cleared three sessions of cottage horror, and returned with Brioche to find Eldwythe under Aurelian occupation with wanted posters of all five PCs at the gates.

Geography and appearance

Timber houses with mossy steep roofs. Smoke from stone chimneys. The smell of fresh pine and warm bread. Axes thudding beyond the tree line. A palisade fence around the central settlement, breached only by the main gate (and, as the party would discover in session 15, by sewer cellar doors). Edith’s Confectionery sits at the tree-line edge in a squat log building. Phil’s Bakery is loaf-shaped with a brass bell. The eastern woods house the Candy Cottage at the end of a magic-conjured candy trail; the Eldwythe Sewers run beneath the village.

Government / control

Self-governing as of session 12 — practical, no visible council, no strong faction presence. As of session 14, Aurelian forces under the Pure Light banner have occupied the village in white-and-gold tabards. They search every cart, post wanted posters at the gates, and have the chain-master elite who killed Ruin in session 15 still in the area.

The wanted posters charge the party with “unlawful possession and obstruction of divine inquiry” — phrasing the recap notes is unusual since the descriptions cover all five PCs including Vazquez, who used no magic in session 12. Witness-based intelligence is implied.

Notable features

  • Phil’s Bakery — loaf-shaped exterior; signature dragon-fire-toasted pastries.
  • Edith’s Confectionery — burned in s12, partially restored before the Aurelian arrival.
  • Candy Cottage — east in the woods, Uncle Nibblecheek’s lair.
  • Eldwythe Sewers — beneath the village; Phil’s brigand-stash hidden here.
  • The forest clearing — west of town, the s12 owlbear-ambush site, then the s14-s15 retreat camp, then the site of Ruin’s execution.
  • The palisade and gate — the wanted-poster posting [3].

History in the campaign

Inhabitants

  • Phil Flowerforge (formerly here; departed s15 with Brioche)
  • Edith Applegarth (still here; her status under occupation is unconfirmed)
  • The Bubblegum Halfling (Edith’s brother, restored to halfling form by Nibblecheek’s curse-revert; whereabouts after the cottage uncertain)
  • Eldwythe townsfolk (named only as bucket-brigade volunteers)
  • Aurelian forces (occupation, s14+)

Status as of session 16

Aurelian-occupied. The party cannot return safely. Phil Flowerforge and Briochebane are travelling separately. Eldwythe is now a contested location.
