Edith’s Confectionery is the small candy shop at the edge of the woods in Eldwythe, run by the elderly Edith Applegarth. The party arrived in session 12 to find it on fire with Edith trapped inside; Caelumn breathed cold on the flames, Hugo carried her out and Vasquez organised a bucket brigade, and the fire was out in about five minutes [7][21][22]. In and around the shop they found a scorched painting of young Edith with the brother who “disappeared into the woods and never came home” and a half-eaten cinnamon roll from Phil’s Bakery [23]. Phil Flowerforge later admitted he feared his dragon Briochebane had started the fire, but the cause was never confirmed [4].

Overview

Edith’s Confectionery is the small candy shop at the wooded edge of Eldwythe, run by Edith Applegarth, who has been in the business for fifty or sixty years [6]. Its part in the campaign is brief but consequential: the fire there in session 12 led the party to Phil Flowerforge, and from him to Briochebane and the Candy Cottage.

Geography and appearance

A squat log building at the edge of the woods, with flames crawling across its roof when the party arrived [7]. Inside there is a counter, and smiling lollipops that melted “into grotesque elongated faces” in the heat [8]. After the fire its beams stood “blackened by soot” [9].

Layout

  • The shop floor. A counter, behind which Edith crouched, frozen, as the shop burned [10].
  • The grass behind. Where the party found a half-eaten, slightly charred cinnamon roll [11].

  • The painting. A scorched painting of a young Edith and a young boy, found in the shop [11]. Edith says the boy is her brother, who “disappeared into the woods and never came home” [12].

History in the campaign

Session 12: Eldwythe and the Candy Cottage

Turning a bend near the tree line, the party saw “a thick column of black smoke” and flames across the roof, and heard someone inside calling for help [7]. Caelumn put out a little with Control Flames, opened the door for five fire damage, and breathed a cone of cold into the shop [13]. Hugo carried Edith out [14], and Vasquez rallied the townsfolk into a bucket brigade that had the fire out in about five minutes [15]. Searching, the party found the painting and a cinnamon roll from Phil’s Bakery behind the shop [16]. Edith offered ten gold each and a batch of desserts to whoever found who set the fire [17]. Phil feared his dragon had done it [4].

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

The freed Bubblegum Halfling asked the party whether they had seen his sister, Edith Applegarth [18]. Terry recalled the picture of Edith’s little brother who “disappeared into the woods a long time ago and never came home”, which the party had seen at the confectionery, and the halfling confirmed it [19].

Status

As of session 23. Damaged but standing when the party last saw it in session 12. Whether Brioche started the fire, and whether Phil paid for any rebuilding, was never established. The party passed through Eldwythe again in session 20, when the Aurelian occupation had lifted [20], but the shop was not mentioned. Edith’s whereabouts are unknown.
