The Aurelian coast landfall (s18) is the unnamed stretch of Aurelian coastline where the party came ashore in the middle of the night after a giant winged catfish destroyed their skiff [5][6]. They camped on the beach round a driftwood fire, Mike summoned a deer familiar to keep watch and Caelumn told the story of Vhal’Zarim [18][19], and in the morning they walked inland into the patrol that killed Mike [25][26]. The place was never given a name on-screen.

Overview

The Aurelian coast landfall (s18) is the unnamed stretch of Aurelian coastline where the party came ashore in the middle of the night on 843-03-30, after a giant winged catfish cut their skiff in two and they swam for land [5][6]. It was never given a place-name on-screen. The party camped on the beach, rested through the night and walked inland the next morning, into the patrol that killed Mike.

Geography and appearance

Wet rock, pale sand and low grass bending in the wind, with rough waves that “don’t really carry you gently” and “shove you forward and then drag you back by the legs” [7]. Behind the beach lie “plains of grass, some scattered oak trees and some smaller bushes” [8]. The DM put the party “roughly in like no man’s land” [9]: on a History check Caelumn knew that farmland began “a couple of hours away” [10], and the White Lantern Shrine lay “roughly half a day to a day’s travel inland” [11][12].

The next morning the first stretch inland was muddy but well used, where “the fields are worked and orderly” and the fences mended [13]; there was no town as such, only “a collection of farms” [14].

Notable features

  • The beach camp. Hugo found driftwood that “burns badly in a low smoky fire”, with a shallow dune for cover from the wind [15][16]. Terry held back from casting even Alarm so near Aurelia [17], but Mike summoned a fey deer familiar, Bobby, to feed the fire and keep watch [18].
  • Caelumn’s backstory. Around the fire Caelumn told Mike of his cleric training in Vhal’Zarim, the cathedral city of the Platinum Dragon, and of the Platinum Order [19].
  • The long rest. The swim had cost Caelumn, Terry and Mike a level of exhaustion each [20][21]. “For a few hours the beach holds you” [22], and the rest removed one level [23].

The catfish’s acid split the skiff and the party swam for shore, making landfall “exhausted near death in the middle of night” [5][6]. On the beach the DM put the White Lantern Shrine half a day to a day inland [11], and Caelumn argued for resting there so that the party would be “in peak condition” before getting closer to civilisation [24]. They camped round a driftwood fire, with Bobby on watch. In the morning they walked inland past worked farmland [13] and, ten to fifteen minutes down the road, met the patrol that killed Mike [25][26].
