Terry Pynn (a play on terrapin, in keeping with the species joke) is a tortle wizard, last recorded as a Fighter 1 / Bladesinger Wizard 3 at character level 4, played by Chris from session 4 to the present. He joined the party at Fergus’s Grill in Wyrmbough Grove at the start of session 4 [1][123], as the replacement for the briefly-played Earthwing the Owlin, who in turn replaced the deceased Cholmondeley, and was rebuilt between sessions 5 and 6 from a College of Glamour bard into the fighter-wizard who took the Bladesinger subclass at the end of session 14. The Charisma point he lost at Harvo’s funeral in session 9 came back in session 20, when he returned Harvo’s melody to the great tapestry of the world on watch [27], and his owl familiar, Earthwing, has not been resummoned on-screen since it was killed in session 16 [422]. By his player’s account he grew up in the sewers of Arcanthys, and he now carries The skeleton’s greatsword, the rune-inscribed sword with which a skeleton twice lowered his maximum hit points in session 23 [146][147][145].

Appearance and personality

Terry is a tortle, identified at his s4 introduction as having travelled forty-seven years for fresh water [101]. He carries a set of bagpipes as his enduring instrument, a holdover from his bard origins that survived the wizard respec: they play over his Bladesong [102][103], and by session 17 his shell itself wheezes like them (“my shell is bagpipes for reference”, [104]). Introducing him to a newcomer in session 23, his player put it more strongly: “Terry kind of is made of bagpipes, just for reference.”, and “when he breathes, he kind of wheezes faint bagpipe noises” [105][106]. His ritual casting is sung rather than piped: in session 8, casting Alarm round the camp straight after Find Familiar, he sang the Macarena, and concluded that “ritual casting sounds a lot between Latin and the Macarena” [107][108][109]. His scimitar and short sword (the latter silvered) are his close-range armament; his spellbook is the Bladesinger’s tutelar focus.

Terry’s voice across the campaign tracks his class transitions in three discernible registers. As a bard (s4-s5) he speaks slowly and ramblesomely, refers to his fellow adventurers as “lads”, and drops Lord-of-the-Rings references: “I’m no man. Sir. I am a woman. A woman.” [110]. The jab “I’m a turtle. I always go last” [111] bridges the bard era into the wizard one. As a wizard (s6+) he is drier and pithier, given to lines like “I’m a smart wizard, I know not to touch things” [112] and the now-famous “I can’t help but notice that two of the people I’m traveling with are corrupted by demons. One’s corrupted by a dragon and one’s corrupted by the void.” [113]. As a Bladesinger (s14+) he is briskly confident, casting in motion: “I activate Bladesong” [8].

Terry is also the party’s licensed stalling-tactic deliverer, reciting the elements song [114] and the Animaniacs countries song [115] in-character when the table’s momentum dips. He is religious-philosophical in flavour, with a “people” who maintain a Rite of Returning that he is not yet musically competent to perform [5].

Background

Terry comes from Arcanthys, by his player’s statements, and from what lies under it. This page long had him as a tortle of unspecified geography. Session 19 began to fill that in, “my backstory is slightly being retconned towards me being raised by a rat in the sewers” “underneath Arcanthys” [116][117], and the DM’s reverie on his watch that night put his mother, his father and his sister’s song “back home to Arcanthys” [118]. Session 23 added a training to the upbringing. Meeting Kole, who is from Arcanthys too by his own player’s account, Terry said: “I was trained in the arts of martial and spellcraft in the sewers of Arcanthys, so I am a local.” [119]. He “never saw the surface very much”, there was “a lot of like the magical backwash” down there that “led to some weird combinations of creatures”, and as for the rats, “there was one rat in particular” [120][121][122]. The two sessions agree: an upbringing by a rat in the sewers, and now an education there in arms and spells. All of it is his player’s account of his own character, to which the DM has so far added only the family waiting at home.

Forty-seven years of travel for fresh water predate his arrival at Fergus’s Grill in Wyrmbough Grove [1][123]. Like Earthwing the Owlin before him and Ruin after him, Terry was directed to the party by Sevryn, and he remarked on the pattern in his first session: “Wow. Sevryn seems to be pulling people from all around the world.” [124].

A previous in-fiction sister figure looms over Terry’s character, referenced in Mharos’s succubus vision at the Black Vein Quarry (s9) and again by Terry’s failed Rite of Returning at Harvo’s funeral. The sister’s status (gone? unsung?) is unresolved.

Build history

Terry’s mechanical history is the messiest of any active PC. Chris has provided the canonical sequence:

  1. s4-s5: Bard 3. College of Glamour subclass intent (would have unlocked at level 4 with a 1-level paladin dip; the dip was never taken). Carries bagpipes for flavour.
  2. Off-screen between s5 and s6: respec to Fighter 1 / Wizard 2. The bard 3 build was retired entirely; the planned paladin dip never happened. The same character narratively, with rebuilt mechanical scaffolding. The first in-session evidence is Terry’s own “do you want to send the wizard in first?” and “I’m a smart wizard, I know not to touch things” [2][112]. The first explicit table acknowledgement is another player asking, “Oh, no, wait, you changed from Bard to Wizard, did you?” [3].
  3. s11: build path declared. Terry tells the table: “One level of fighter, two levels of wizard. […] The fighter stuff’s irrelevant until I get Bladesinger” [6].
  4. s14: level 4 reached, Bladesinger subclass selected. The whole party levelled to 4, Terry taking his subclass [125][126]; the new level’s features waited on a long rest [127][128].
  5. s15: Bladesinger first deployed in combat. “I activate Bladesong” [8]. Dual-wielding short sword and scimitar, on his first turn under Bladesong he scored a natural-20 scimitar attack and killed an Aurelian recruit: “you run your scimitar through his throat” [129][130].

Last recorded build, unchanged since session 14: Fighter 1 / Bladesinger Wizard 3 (level 4 total). No later level up is on record; the DM has promised one once the party is done with the ridge temple [131]. It was still pending in session 23, where he reminded the table of the promise and told the new player “Oh we’re gonna be level five in no time at all.” [132][133], which fits the level 4 on record. It was still pending when session 24 stopped, and his player was counting on it: “I’m gonna level up or I’m gonna fucking die trying” [134][135].

Equipment

  • Bagpipes: flavour instrument, played over his Bladesong [102][103].
  • Short sword (silvered): primary off-hand. In session 23 it came out of a zombie “coated in black goo”, and later found the gap in a greatsword skeleton’s guard for eight radiant damage [71][136][137].
  • Scimitar: Bladesinger primary weapon since s14. It cut the chain of Kole’s manacles in session 23 [138][139], and in session 24 it landed a critical hit on the last greatsword skeleton [140][141]. He also spoke of casting True Strike through a rapier, a weapon no page records; which of his blades he meant is for his player to say [142].
  • The skeleton’s greatsword: taken in session 23 from the first of the greatsword skeletons. “It definitely has runes inscribed on it, but it’s hard to tell.” was all the DM would say of it, and Terry’s answer was “Alright. I’m going to hold on to it.” [143][144][145]. It is not confirmed magical. In the skeleton’s hands it twice lowered his own maximum hit points; whether that belongs to the sword or to its wielder is not stated [146][147]. A moment before picking it up he had said that he lacked “the carry capacity to hold any of this” [148], and how he carries a blade the DM had called “the size of your body”, speaking to Caelumn, is not narrated [149]. His thought on it: “I could use a great sword in Bladesong be kind of sick.” [150]. Session 24 does not show it, and while Terry was handing over the staff his player said that nothing found so far had been a weapon he could use [151][94].
  • The root room’s wooden staff: he ran in for it once the roots had been drawn off with water, and gave it to Caelumn to look at; nobody has identified it, and who keeps it is not stated [152][153][154][155].
  • The black orbs: after his blood paid the vampire-lord statue, Kole said he would pass him the second orb, though nothing later shows it in his hands [156][157][158].
  • A Potion of Healing, fed to him by Father Thomas, one of those the party had held in common [159][160]. The DM retired the party inventory after session 24, so what each character carries is to be shared out [161].
  • Cloak of Protection: gifted by Sevryn in session 11.
  • Spellbook (standard Bladesinger kit, including Shadow Blade, cast for the first time in [162], and Find Familiar, ritualised since s8). It does not hold Comprehend Languages, since he has not found a scroll of it [163][164].
  • Crossbow: fired with True Strike against the flameskulls in session 22, for three radiant damage; “That’s more damage than any of my crossbows have ever done.”, he said of Hugo’s thrown stone [165][166][167].

Familiar

Terry summoned an owl familiar via Find Familiar in session 8 [4], naming it Earthwing after the abortive s3 PC of the same name, a deliberate reuse, treated as the owl-version of the same in-fiction character. The owl was shot down on its first scouting flight at the Black Vein Quarry by an unseen attacker, for 6 piercing and 8 necrotic damage [168], and was re-summoned at need [169]. It died again scouting in the sewers in session 16, when “Something came out of the dark.” [170][171][172], and by session 17 his familiar had, in his words, “died more times than I can count” [173]. It has not been resummoned on-screen since: in session 21 he realised he had forgotten it and left it unsummoned [174][175][176], and in session 23, outside the temple, he weighed it again and gave it up: “I could spend an hour summoning my familiar but it will die the moment it goes inside the” “cave so it’s pointless. Because it always dies.” [177][178]. Terry’s reaction to the first downing was “There better be something that killed my familiar I’m coming to find you motherfucker” [179].

Penalties

  • -1 Charisma for failing the Performance check on the Rite of Returning at Harvo’s funeral [5]. Terry was not yet proficient in Performance; the DM imposed the stat penalty as a ritual-significant consequence. Long treated as permanent, the penalty was reversed in session 20: on his night watch Terry reached for his sister’s melody, recalled Harvo’s instead, returned the song “to the great tapestry of the world,” and regained the lost Charisma point [27]. The Rite he could not complete at the funeral, he completed eleven sessions later. See Session 20 under Session by session below.
  • Crybaby points: a table mechanic rather than in-fiction lore. When a player complains too much the DM may award a crybaby point, which he can later spend to force that player to reroll any roll; the wiki’s older reading of them as negative inspiration (a -1d4 penalty) was only partly right. Still very much in use: in session 21 the DM spent one of Terry’s to force a reroll of a Constitution save, and made clear that the points are a separate tally from Terry’s Silvery Barbs counter: “you get a crybaby point every time you complain” [38][180][181]. In session 22 a complaint of Terry’s “almost deserves a crybaby point” [182]. The same session gave the Silvery Barbs counter its first on-screen spend, as the table read it: the DM added a point when Terry cast the spell, and on Terry’s next natural 20 a kobold’s burning scroll forced a reroll. The DM never named the mechanism, and whether the points can be used against anyone else “remains to be seen” ([183][184][185][186]; ruling 64). In session 23 the points came up only in a joke of his own, “Get in touch if you get crit and I might spare you a crybaby point.” [187], and he cast no Silvery Barbs, so the counter did not move: the one time he wanted the spell, he could not see the target [188]. Neither came up in session 24.
  • Lost maximum hit points (session 23): the greatsword of a skeleton in the ridge temple cut his maximum hit points by eight, and a second stroke lowered them “even further”, by an amount the DM did not give [146][147]. The DM has said that a maximum lowered by a spectre’s touch comes back on a long rest [189][190]; he said it of the spectre, and nobody asked about the sword, not even in session 24, when the third skeleton’s greatsword took eight from Hugo’s maximum [191].

Campaign role

Terry is Chris’s third character, after Cholmondeley died in session 3 and Earthwing the Owlin came and went. He joined at Fergus’s Grill in Wyrmbough Grove at the start of session 4 [1][123], another of the recruits Sevryn has sent the party from far away, and began as a bagpipe-playing bard and the party’s occasional face in The Warrens beneath Umbrafall, where the hunt for Maelis Dirn ended in session 7. From session 6 he was a wizard on a fighter dip, the path he declared in session 11 and completed as a Bladesinger at level 4 in session 14 (see Build history).

His owl familiar, Earthwing, has died again and again (see Familiar). At Harvo’s funeral in session 9 he failed his people’s Rite of Returning, as he had once failed it for his sister, and lost a point of Charisma that came back only in session 20, when he hummed Harvo’s tune on watch (see Penalties). On the road to Eldwythe and in the Candy Cottage he scouted by owl, bluffed Uncle Nibblecheek and woke Briochebane.

The push towards Aurelia in sessions 15 to 18 brought his Bladesong debut, the deaths of Ruin and Mike, and the ruling that in Aurelia even Bladesong is unsanctioned arcane power; after Mike’s execution he stopped hiding his magic, and the party turned back. Since session 19 his player has given him an upbringing in the sewers of Arcanthys (see Background). Guarding Laura Bennett’s caravan and then following a kidnapped boy’s trail to the ridge temple north of Greysmere, he has survived the undead plague, kept The Book of Secrets until he gave it to Father Thomas, freed Kole, and lost maximum hit points to the greatsword he now carries. He has not died.

Session by session

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

Main article: Session 4

Terry joined the party in session 4 as Chris’s new character, a tortle bard with bagpipes, in the seat left by Earthwing the Owlin [1]. Being from the far side of the continent, he noticed at once: “Wow. Sevryn seems to be pulling people from all around the world.” [124]. On the road to Mirestrand he piped bardic inspiration to the wounded Vasquez [192][193], and at the Still Current Inn he talked for hours, by his account having travelled forty-seven years to find fresh water, until The Black Mask drew him, Hugo and Caelumn into the void [101][194][195]. In Umbrafall he balked at The Broker’s contract on Maelis Dirn, since he barely knew how to use a sword, but went along, and the moment he tried to be sneaky the collectors they were tailing bolted [196][197][198].

Session 5: Black Hollow Market Tunnels and the Hollow Guardians

Main article: Session 5

Session 5 was Terry’s last as a bard. When Caelumn lit Produce Flame in a cavern full of spores, the blast caught Terry and left Caelumn down and burning, and Terry brought him back with a second-level Cure Wounds for 22 [199][200][201][202][203][204]. At the challenge of the Hollow Guardians he stepped up as the party’s face and answered with everyone’s names; Caelumn’s claim that they were servants of the hollow failed its Deception check and started the fight [205][206][207][208]. Having already persuaded the DM that Command is no longer a charm effect, he spent a second-level slot on it to send both Guardians fleeing [209][210][211][212]. His own verdict on his part: “So far I just feel like I kind of sit here and make people run away sometimes.” [213]

Session 6: Maze of the Minotaur and the Titan

Main article: Session 6

Terry came to session 6 a wizard, rebuilt off-screen from the bard (see Build history), and said as much: “I’m a smart wizard, I know not to touch things.” [112]. In The Warrens he suspected that the fungal zombies had been human [214][215], and with two of the party down to the phase spider he readied a True Strike and shot it dead as it came through a portal at him [216][217][218]. He cast Alarm over the storeroom where they rested, claimed the silvered short sword, and refused the bookshelf that spoke to him alone [219][220][221][222]. Against the Titan he fed Vasquez a greater healing potion, spent Silvery Barbs on a boulder that had come within four points of killing Caelumn outright, and walked a whole branch of the maze into a dead end [223][224][225][226].

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

As the Titan fight ended, Terry poured a healing potion down the throat of the downed Vasquez [227][228], and he alone saw the Titan turn on Maelis Dirn and pound her into the ground [229][230]. Searching her remains with Hugo, he found her cracked ring and asked The Broker what it was: a soulbinder ring [231][232][233]. It bought the party a free dinner at the inn [234], and he passed it to Caelumn, since “it needs to be someone with spell slot progression” [235]. He spent his own gold on incense for Find Familiar [236][237][238]. In the street fight with two Nightwatch guards over a woman’s urn his Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, for once, worked [239][240][241], but the night still ended with Vasquez arrested.

Session 8: Bruise the Cellmate, the Succubus, and the Quarry Ghosts

Main article: Session 8

On the road north to the Black Vein Quarry Terry was still ritual-casting Alarm round the camp, with Find Familiar not yet begun, when the succubus struck [242][243][244]. She dominated him and told him to heal her with his highest-level spells: “I don’t have any healing spells.” [245][246]. When her concentration broke and his mind was his own again, he stabbed her in the back with True Strike and his silvered short sword [247][248]. After the fight the ritual finished at last, and out of his shell came an owl that looked very like the Owlin who had briefly joined the party; he called it Earthwing [249][250][251][252], then sang the Macarena while casting Alarm [108][109]. At the quarry the owl was shot out of the air on its first scouting flight [253][254][255].

Session 9: The Death of Harvo

Main article: Session 9

Terry began session 9 swearing revenge on whatever had killed his familiar [179]. In the Black Vein Quarry the succubus’s trance made each of them relive a failure, and Terry’s was his sister’s death: he had played his people’s Rite of Returning for her and found nothing, so that “because of me, a song is unmade” [256][257]. He came out of it frightened [258]. The succubus later dominated him and pointed him at Caelumn [259], and he was out of range to cast Silvery Barbs against the critical with which the dominated Hugo killed Harvo [260][261]. Freed, he threw a healing potion that reached the dying Vasquez [262][263]. At Harvo’s pyre he tried the Rite again and failed, hearing that his sister’s absence from the harmony was his fault, and lost a point of Charisma, declared permanent [264][5].

Session 10: Ruin Joins, the Aurelian Conspiracy, the Plate Armour

When Ruin wandered into camp asking for food, Terry, hidden in his shell, put out his head to introduce himself and to complain that he was still traumatised and wanted his Charisma back [265][266][267][268]. He asked the newcomer why anyone would follow a stranger’s letter across the world, being himself on a mission to find “magic music of my sister or something” [269][270]. In the alley ambush by an Aurelian Paladin and three others he spent the fight in the Dodge action, which the DM first took for him when he did not answer [271][272][273]. Afterwards he remarked that two of his companions were corrupted by demons [113], and when the paladin’s plate proved to be Nullstone armour he reckoned that no one with magic would want to wear it [274].

Session 11: Owlbears and the Soulbinder

Main article: Session 11

Terry took a Cloak of Protection as the uncommon magic item each player was given, judging that a second pair of winged boots would not be fair [275][276], and brought Earthwing back, the owl popping its head out of his shell [169]. On the road to Eldwythe, when Ruin introduced him to the girl Kit by a pun name, he claimed a family full of them and recited the chemical elements, learnt when he was bored in his cave [277][278][279][280]. When three owlbears attacked the camp his Magic Missile, fired out of the pipes of his shell, brought one down [281][282], and he took a Second Wind and withdrew into his shell, telling the DM his build: “One level of fighter, two levels of wizard. […] The fighter stuff’s irrelevant until I get Bladesinger.” [283][284][6]

Session 12: Eldwythe and the Candy Cottage

Main article: Session 12

On the road to Eldwythe a small boy rummaged in Terry’s shell while he slept, until Ruin chased him off [285][286][287]. On his own watch Terry heard what sounded like a woman’s voice on the wind; he refused to be drawn, let his friends sleep, and told them about it in the morning [288][289][290][291]. At the Candy Cottage his owl spotted three goblins through a window [292][293]. He walked in without wiping his feet, so the doormat came alive and flew at his face; he blocked it with Shield, begging the others to spare it as his flying carpet [294][295][296][297]. He then made himself a cup of tea in the kitchen, opened the next door on the candy goblins with “hello motherfuckers”, and spent his last spell slot on another Shield [298][299][300].

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

Inside the Candy Cottage a magical rolling pin turned everyone but Vasquez and Caelumn into gingerbread, Terry and Ruin among them [301][302]. In the orchard Terry reached for a candied apple and woke three tree-spirits, and one of them charmed him in spite of his Heroic Inspiration [303][304][305][306][307]. Clicking the basement portal dropped him alone among four Gingerbread Steves, to his protest that he “didn’t know clicking that thing would teleport me into a combat” [308][309]. Once they were dealt with, it was Terry who remembered Edith Applegarth’s picture of the little brother who had vanished into the woods, and so recognised the rescued Bubblegum Halfling as her lost brother [310][311].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

Main article: Session 14

Retreating up the tower stairs from the Gummy Mummy, Terry sent his owl ahead into the kitchen, where it found Uncle Nibblecheek at work and a dragon with cloudy white eyes asleep on the oven [312][313]. Broom in hand, he and Ruin passed themselves off to Nibblecheek as new recruits, and he believed them [314][315][316]. Left in the kitchen, Terry swept his way past the dragon with the egg, which did not react, and saw that its scales were more gold than red [317][318][319][320]; then he woke it from Nibblecheek’s control with a brioche bun, and Briochebane left with the party [321][322]. Those clues told the party that Brioche was not the dragon Sevryn’s quest wanted [323]. At the end of the session the party reached level 4, and Terry took his Bladesinger subclass [125][126].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

Main article: Session 15

Session 15 cost the party Ruin, beheaded by an Aurelian chain in the clearing where Althea had fled, and in the fight that followed Terry raised Bladesong for the first time and, on a natural 20, ran his scimitar through a recruit’s throat [8][129][130]. He fled with the others behind Phil Flowerforge’s smoke into the Eldwythe sewers [324]. There his first Shadow Blade killed a Kuo-toa outright [162][325][326], but when Vasquez electrified the water, Terry, who claimed to be doing the splits above it, failed the save and reckoned the lightning undid the Second Wind he had just used: “I’m Van Damme. I’m doing a Van Damme.” [327][328][329][330]. His hit on the last rats ended the session’s final fight [331].

Session 16: Through the Sewers, Onto the Skiff

Main article: Session 16

In the Eldwythe sewers Terry declared that he casts his rituals by muttering stories, and finished a Detect Magic that way while Althea identified the Hat of Disguise [332][333]. In the flooded fungus room he jumped on the back of one of the big fungal creatures and drove both swords into its throat [334][335][336]. Earthwing, scouting ahead, was killed by something unseen: “Something came out of the dark.” [170][171]. In the sarcophagus chamber he took a ghoul’s head off, but the flame-skulls’ spells put him down until Hugo’s healing potion brought him round [337][338][339][340][341]. The party left the sewers on a skiff bound south for the White Lantern Shrine, three days’ sail away [342].

Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw

Main article: Session 17

Terry welcomed the two new characters, Mike and Steven, with a warning: “we never make comments about US politics in this group, ever” [10]. The DM then retconned the end of session 16: Vasquez and Althea had been left behind and captured, and the Hat of Disguise destroyed, which Terry protested, asking for a retcon in which Vasquez kept the hat [343][344][345]. When Mike noticed his spellbook, Terry said he tries to keep it tucked away [346][347]. In the fight in the frozen water on the voyage south he took the frost breath with Absorb Elements and raised Bladesong [12][13], and his Silvery Barbs forced a water wolf to reroll a natural-20 bite on Mike, whose Shield turned the reroll aside [348][349][350][351].

Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road

Main article: Session 18

Terry opened session 18 with the recap, noting that he had objected to the hat’s loss [14]. He put 14 damage into the Brinemaw Wyrm with his silvered weapon [352][353]; the winged catfish’s acid breath caught him, though his save and Absorb Elements cut it to a quarter [354][355], and the swim ashore after it sank the skiff cost him a level of exhaustion [17]. When the Aurelian patrol on the road moved to execute Mike, he meant to raise Bladesong under cover of his bagpipes, having come to Aurelia only because he believed it was not magic [102][356]. The DM ruled that in Aurelia it counts as “unsanctioned arcane power”, and Terry stood down [357][358]. After the execution he gave up hiding: he would cast openly and fight his way through every Aurelian patrol [359][360][361].

Session 19: A Penitent Priest, an Unmade Leash, and the Pixie in the Dark

Terry’s backstory moved on this session. His player retconned his upbringing towards “being raised by a rat in the sewers” underneath Arcanthys [116][117], and on his night watch, low and hungry, he wanted to go home to Arcanthys, where the DM suggested his mother, his father and perhaps his sister’s song were waiting [22]. In the fey ambush that night the Pixie turned him into a chicken [362][363]. His Silvery Barbs made a wisp reroll a natural 20 against Caelumn, cutting 27 lightning damage to eight and taking the DM’s counter to three [364][365][366][367], and he killed one of the wisps while it was invisible [368].

Session 20: The Man Who Was Always Here

Terry turned his back on Aurelia as a guard on Laura Bennett’s caravan from Eldwythe to Umbrafall, and on his first watch he paid off an old debt: reaching for his sister’s melody, he remembered Harvo’s instead, and “you return his song to the great tapestry of the world and you gain a charisma point back” [369][27], undoing the penalty from the failed funeral rite of session 9. On the same watch he let a thief rob one of Laura’s wagons rather than wake anyone [370][371]; she docked about five gold from his pay for it, and Terry handed her ten to buy out his share of the job [372][29]. In the road ambush by ghouls and ogre zombies he raised Bladesong and Mirror Image and stood guard over Laura, taking no damage all fight [373][374][375][376].

Session 21: The Hand That Points North

Terry settled the argument over Laura Bennett’s fee [30]. At the inn in Greysmere he and Father Thomas questioned Fen, the witness to the kidnapping; he was against bringing Fen along, since “when someone comes with us they tend to die”, and his Insight caught a flash of shame on Fen’s face that nobody has explained [31][32][33]. Having drunk both his ales, he could not recall Fen’s directions [377][378]. At the ridge temple he asked whether the 150 gold was worth their lives, then went in under Bladesong and Mirror Image and killed three of the six undead sentries, though the swollen zombie’s poison left him with the undead plague [36][379][380][39][40][381][42]. Spending his last Bladesong against the living skin, he drank Hugo’s anti-toxin and cleared the plague from his system [45][382][383][384].

Session 22: The Dragon in the Statue

Session 22 played Terry as still poisoned with the undead plague, which session 21 had cleared, until a second anti-toxin cured him [48][63]. His Silvery Barbs turned the living skin’s natural 20 against Hugo into a miss, and his own natural 20 was then rerolled as a kobold’s scroll burned, which the table took as the DM spending the counter [385][183][386][184][185]. He took the Study action against the regenerating kobold and found under its tile a painting of it “horribly aged and deadly wounded”, which Caelumn burned [387][388][53][389][390]. He found a secret door, and later, with no spell slots left and no healing under the plague, held the doorway alone against the merged flameskulls [54][391][57][58]. He kept The Book of Secrets from Caelumn and gave it to Father Thomas [60][61][64].

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

In the ridge temple Terry kept his last Bladesong back, thinking “there might be something worse coming that I need it for” [392][393]. The first of the greatsword skeletons floored him with a shield bash [394][395][396], and he turned from it to cut the chained prisoner, Kole, loose [138][139]. He paid for it: the skeleton ran him through from behind on a blow he chose not to Shield, and its sword twice lowered his maximum hit points, by eight and then by an unstated amount, to the party’s lowest [397][146][398][147][80]. He beheaded a zombie on a natural 20 [399][400], told Kole that self-preservation was his priority and that he had trained in the sewers of Arcanthys, Kole’s city [401][402][119], and kept the rune-inscribed sword, The skeleton’s greatsword [143][144][145].

Session 24: The Knight of Smoke

Terry took stock after the mist and found he had nothing left but one Bladesong [403][404]. He darted in for the wooden staff while the roots chased a water trail, then, torn over going on, called himself “a selfish fucking turtle who doesn’t like anyone around me” [152][153][95]. As tiebreaker he voted to stay, begrudgingly [405][406]. Kole talked him into feeding the vampire-lord statue: his wrist in its mouth cost eight necrotic damage and opened a compartment holding the second black orb, which Kole said he would pass to him [407][156][157][158]. Taking the DM’s pointing at the floor seam as the only way forward, he pushed the knight statue over; the knight of smoke dropped him in its first turn, and Father Thomas’s potion stood him up on ten hit points [408][409][410][411][160].

Status at the end of session 24

Alive, and in the middle of a fight with the knight of smoke in the ridge temple, which the DM paused in initiative with the knight up and, by Father Thomas’s account, barely hurt [412][413]. Its first turn put him at zero, and a Potion of Healing that Father Thomas had taken from the party inventory raised him to ten hit points; by Father Thomas’s count he has nine temporary hit points from Twilight Sanctuary, and he is concentrating on Blade Ward [411][160][414][415]. He has one Bladesong left, which he calls his emergency [416][417]; offered an inspiration for a spell he had linked in chat, he answered “I already did, but thank you” [418]. His maximum hit points are still reduced from session 23, by eight and then by an amount the DM did not state; he had no hit dice left after the first fight there, no rest has been taken since, and the level up the DM promised for clearing this dungeon is still pending [146][147][419][420][134][135]. He carries The skeleton’s greatsword, rune-inscribed and unidentified, though session 24 does not show it [144][145]; the second black orb is his on Kole’s word only, and the wooden staff, which he took from the root room, he passed to Caelumn to look at [153][154][158]. His Charisma point was restored in session 20 [27], his attacks count as magical in the DM’s tentative ruling [421], and his owl familiar, killed in session 16 [422], has still not been resummoned on-screen: he gave up on it outside the temple [177][178]. By his player’s account he comes from the sewers of Arcanthys, the city that Kole also calls home [402][119].

Player

Played by Chris from session 4 onward; previously played Cholmondeley (s2-s3) and (briefly) Earthwing the Owlin (s3 cameo). In session 24 his player’s jokes about the date, that it had been “Sunday, the 5th of April” [423] in the game for five sessions, and about three weeks of daily near-deaths [424][425], were his own tallies, apparently read off this wiki’s calendar; neither is a date or a count from the DM.
