Sunset is Nigh was the small green wyrmling, son of Death-at-Sunset, who roosted inside his mother’s skeleton in the cave system beneath Wyrmbough Grove and claimed to be her avatar of vengeance. He was raised in secret by a small cult of corrupted elves and a Yuan-ti woman. The party encountered him in session 3; his Suggestion drove Hugo out of the cave; the Yuan-ti woman killed Cholmondeley mid-fight with a double-bite critical; the wyrmling himself was killed by Vasquez (opportunity-attack critical hit, s3) as he tried to fly up [6]. His skull was prepared into a clean-toothed crown for Hugo by Fergus, and his body provided eight portions of dragon meat for the road.

Overview

Sunset is Nigh was the small green wyrmling who hid inside his mother Death-at-Sunset’s skeleton in her cave-lair, claiming her name and her authority of vengeance. He was raised in secret by a small cult of corrupted elves and a Yuan-ti woman who had set up living quarters in a side chamber.

In session 3, the party penetrated the cave. The wyrmling’s voice came from inside the skull. Caelumn’s firebolt revealed the wyrmling was tiny [5]. He unleashed a poison breath weapon for 21 damage halved by the party’s Gwen Homora-brewed potions; cast Suggestion on Hugo driving him out of the cave; and watched the Yuan-ti woman kill Cholmondeley with a double-bite natural-twenty critical. He was killed by Vasquez (opportunity-attack critical hit, s3): as the wyrmling tried to fly up, Vasquez’s opportunity attack perfect-critted, tearing off the wyrmling’s tail and hind legs, and Vasquez decapitated him on the next turn [6].

Appearance and demeanour

Small green wyrmling — the recap describes “tiny” once Caelumn’s firebolt illuminated him. Voice from inside the dragon-skull was theatrical, claiming mantle. The actual physical form was much smaller than his persona suggested.

Status as of session 16

Dead. Skull on Hugo as a crown — Fergus stripped the meat off the bone and “places a clean skull with intact teeth” on Hugo’s serving plate [10]. Hugo had asked specifically for “a victory skull kind of thing” [11]. The body’s eight portions of dragon meat [12] were ruled to grant 5 temporary HP each on consumption [4] and were eaten across the s3-s4 travel days.
