The s8 Succubus is the fiend who posed as a lost old woman with a torch at the party’s forest-clearing camp on the road north towards the Black Vein Quarry [3]. She dominated Vasquez, Terry and Harvo in turn with an eighth-level Dominate Person, whistled up four crossbow thieves, and was killed by Hugo’s axes [4][12][13][11][5][6]. Her only possession was a Charlatan’s Die [27]. She is a different creature from the session 9 crystal-chamber succubus.

Overview

The s8 Succubus came out of the fungal forest as a lost old woman with a torch and asked Vasquez to help her back to Umbrafall [3]. A touch and a whisper later he was fighting for her, and the party’s camp became a fight against a fiend who controlled one member after another, with four crossbow thieves in the brush [4][5]. Hugo killed her with two axe blows on his turn [6]. She is a different creature from the session 9 succubus of the Black Vein Quarry.

Appearance and demeanour

A lost old woman with a torch, who said she did not remember what had brought her out there and was startled when Vasquez held out a hand [7]. She dropped the disguise as initiative began [8] and flew between targets in the fight [9][10].

Abilities as played

  • Dominate Person, understood at the table as an eighth-level upcast that lengthens the duration rather than adding targets [11]. She used it by touch and whisper on Vasquez [4], and on Terry [12] and Harvo [13]. A charmed creature could not attack her, and breaking her concentration freed her thralls [14][15][16].
  • Orders: she told her thralls to heal her with their biggest spells [17][18].
  • Psychic slash and draining kiss: one slash dealt 13 psychic damage [19]; her kiss took 6 necrotic damage and 6 from Harvo’s maximum hit points [20].
  • Whistle: a two-finger whistle brought poisoned crossbow bolts from the brush [5].
  • Shape-shifting: she tried to change shape as she bled out [21].

Camping in a clearing on the road north, Vasquez went to help a lost old woman, who laid a hand on his shoulder and whispered; he walked back under her control and attacked Terry [4]. She dropped her disguise as initiative began [8] and whistled up four crossbow thieves [5]. She dominated Terry [12], then Harvo, who healed her instead of attacking [25]. Caelumn’s Magic Missile and Chromatic Orb broke her hold on Vasquez and Terry [14][15], and Harvo’s cannon ended his charm [26]. Hugo’s two axe hits killed her [6]; she carried only a Charlatan’s Die [27].

Status

As of session 23. Dead, killed by Hugo in the clearing on the road north [21]. Her only possession, the Charlatan’s Die, was identified by Harvo and thrown back to Hugo [28].
