The s8 Succubus is the disguised-as-old-woman fiend who attacked the party at their forest-clearing camp on the road north toward the Black Vein Quarry. She approached holding a torch, asked for help getting back to Umbrafall, whispered a Charisma save (failed) at Vasquez — Dominate Person at 8th-level upcast (longer duration) — and revealed her true form. Two crossbow-thief archers ambushed from cover. She was killed by Hugo mid-shape-shift; her corpse yielded the Charlatan’s Die. She is a separate entity from the s9 crystal-chamber Succubus in the Black Vein Quarry.
Overview
The s8 Succubus disguised herself as an old woman with a torch and asked the party for help getting back to Umbrafall mid-camp on the road north [1]. Vasquez stepped forward; she whispered to him; he failed a Charisma save and was dominated under an 8th-level upcast Dominate Person (the upcast extends duration, not strength — DM clarified at the table). Her two thief-archer minions opened from cover with poisoned crossbow bolts.
In combat she was killed by Hugo’s handaxes after a Magic-Missile-broken Concentration freed Vasquez and after a kiss-and-drain attempt on Harvo (6 necrotic + -6 max HP, then a Dominate Charisma save Harvo failed despite elf-trait advantage; Harvo Cure-Wounded her for 5 then Eldritch-Cannon-blasted her for 18 to break the charm). Hugo finished her with two handaxe attacks (9 + 11 damage), chopping off her head as she tried to shape-shift mid-collapse.
Her corpse yielded the Charlatan’s Die [2], a homebrew d6 with controlled-result mechanic; Caelumn took it.
Distinct from the s9 Succubus
The campaign bible’s open-issues note records that this s8 Succubus and the s9 crystal-chamber Succubus are separate entities. Both are succubi; both are antagonist NPCs in proximate sessions; both used Dominate Person; the canonical-names list does not clearly separate them but the recap chronology does.
Status as of session 16
Dead. Body left at the campsite. Charlatan’s Die in Caelumn’s loadout.
