Seraphine is the sacred sovereign of Aurelia and the living vessel of the Pure Light’s goddess — both holy ruler and divine protector of the Shining Bastion. A radiant figure in golden armour, she appears at the city’s great public rites, where she addresses vast crowds in reverent silence on purity, duty, vigilance, and Aurelia’s calling. In session 19 the party hear, for the first time, the concrete legend behind the awe: the goblin Gristleback reports that Seraphine “flew through the sky in the Arcanvian War and fucking destroyed five Archmages by herself” and confirms she is the leader of Aurelia [6]. She rules from Crownspire, the palace-cathedral-fortress at the heart of the city, and her single sacred order — guards, soldiers, priests, clerks, and inquisitors — is the instrument by which her laws are upheld. She has not appeared on-screen in person; s19 is her first transcript mention. She is the apex of the Aurelian forces command structure pursuing the party.

Overview

Seraphine is the sacred sovereign of Aurelia — both head of state of the Shining Bastion and the living vessel of the Pure Light’s goddess. To the people of Aurelia she is both holy ruler and divine protector, a figure of awe rather than affection. She has not appeared on-screen in person; session 19 is her first transcript mention, when the goblin Gristleback names her to the party as Aurelia’s leader and the lone victor over five Archmages in the Arcanvian War [2]. Per the DM’s world brief and now Gristleback’s account, she is the apex of the command structure responsible for every Aurelian operation the party has encountered so far.

Appearance and demeanour

A radiant figure in golden armour. Her appearances at great public rites draw vast crowds in reverent silence. When she addresses the masses, she speaks of purity, duty, vigilance, and the greatness of Aurelia’s calling — the four themes that recur in every public address.

Power and reputation

Tales of Seraphine’s battlefield might are told with near-religious awe. Many Aurelians believe that if Seraphine herself takes the field, victory is already assured. Session 19 attaches a concrete feat to that reputation: per Gristleback, Seraphine “took on five Archmages and basically didn’t get a dent” — she “flew through the sky in the Arcanvian War and fucking destroyed five Archmages by herself” [3]. Whether this is literal or embroidered legend, it is the first specific claim about her martial capacity to reach the party, and it reads as a flat warning rather than Pure Light propaganda — Gristleback is a destitute outsider, not a worshipper (“I wouldn’t want to deal with her, if I’m being completely honest”, [4]. The flight detail also raises but does not settle whether her power is innate, divine, or item-borne. The “Arcanvian War” is a previously-unrecorded conflict and its name spelling is unconfirmed (the goblin’s “Arcanvis” elsewhere maps to Arcanthys); it is worth tracking as a new piece of Aurelian backstory.

Her sacred ordinance binds together every visible arm of state and faith — guards in the streets, soldiers on the walls, priests in the shrines, clerks in the record halls, and inquisitors charged with rooting out hidden threats. To the faithful, this is not tyranny but vigilance.

Role in the campaign so far

Seraphine has not been encountered in person. She is, however, the apex of the command structure the party has been on the wrong end of from session 7 onward:

  • The Aurelian abduction programme targeting magically-gifted residents of cities outside Aurelia (the Dawn Mercy Clinic cover-up, s7-s10) ultimately reports to her.
  • The Aurelian occupation of Eldwythe in s14 with wanted posters of all five PCs operates under her sovereign authority.
  • The Aurelian chain-master’s scripted execution of Ruin and theft of The Egg in s15 was carried out by her forces.
  • Session 19 is the first time the party hear her named. On Steven’s watch the goblin Gristleback, having learned the party means to enter Aurelia, asks if they know about Seraphine and then drops the lore that establishes her as both ruler and singular threat [2]. The party take it as confirmation that an unpapered raid on Aurelia would put them within reach of a combatant who has solo-defeated five Archmages — reinforcing their s19 decision to abandon the Egg push for now.

Status as of session 19

Alive, at the head of Aurelia’s government, ruling from Crownspire — and now confirmed as such in-fiction by Gristleback (“she’s the leader of Aurelia”, [5]. Still off-screen; not encountered in person. The party, having heard her legend, chose in s19 to abandon the Aurelia/Egg push for now rather than approach a city defended by a figure who reportedly destroyed five Archmages single-handed. She is the campaign’s apex antagonist, named but not yet seen.
