Risa is the young woman the party met in session 7 outside the Whisper Coil Emporium in Umbrafall, clutching a metal urn while two corrupt Nightwatch guards tried to take it from her. The party intervened; the resulting fight got Vasquez arrested. Investigation in session 8 revealed the urn contained lye, not ash — Risa’s sister had been aquamated rather than cremated at the Dawn Mercy Clinic, with a 20-minute timeline gap between the supposed cremation and someone “checking on” the body. In session 10, an interrogation of the clinic’s orderly Drew confessed the truth: Aurelian agents had abducted Risa’s sister, Mira Hale, for showing magical capabilities, and shipped her to Aurelia via Dock 13. Risa is the seed from which the campaign’s Aurelian conspiracy thread grew.
Overview
Risa is the young woman of Umbrafall whose sister was abducted by Aurelian agents under the cover of the Dawn Mercy Clinic’s alleged-cremation services. She is the campaign’s first concrete thread connecting the seemingly-disparate Umbrafall criminality to the larger Aurelian conspiracy.
The party met her in session 7 outside the Whisper Coil Emporium, clutching a metal urn while two Nightwatch guards tried to drag it from her: “It’s the last thing I have of her” [5]. The party’s intervention saved the urn, killed one guard, and got Vasquez arrested when the second guard’s flare summoned reinforcements. Risa attached to the party from that moment.
In session 8, Hugo’s 22 Perception detected the urn contained lye — not ash. The chemicals used in aquamation closely resemble lye in residue. Risa’s account added a timeline anomaly: her sister was supposedly cremated at 10:00 AM, but the Dawn Mercy Clinic logs showed someone “checking on” the body at 10:20 — i.e., after she was supposedly burned. The clinic name surfaced this session: Dawn Mercy [6].
Her sister had complained of headaches, seeing things, and once turned a candle on with her mind. Latent magical ability; the kind of detail that, in retrospect, marks her as Aurelian-abduction material.
In session 10, Caelumn’s three-nat-20 Intimidation streak broke the clinic orderly Drew, who confessed the full truth: the sister was alive in Aurelia, abducted by Aurelian agents who had a name and orders before they arrived. The sister: Mira Hale.
Appearance and demeanour
Young, distraught, alone. By s10 visibly drinking heavily and despondent (“she’s never coming back,” [4]. The party’s promise to investigate during their planned Aurelia transit is the closest thing to hope she has.
History / role in the campaign
Session 7 — the urn
Outside the Whisper Coil Emporium after the party’s restock, two Nightwatch guards tried to drag a metal urn from a young woman. She begged the party for help. Hugo declined to intervene; Vasquez and Caelumn did not. The fight ended with one guard down, the second arresting Vasquez via flare-summoned reinforcements. Risa attached to the party in the alley.
Session 8 — the lye
Hugo’s 22 Perception identified lye in the urn rather than ash. Risa’s account: her sister had been suffering headaches and seeing things, swore she had turned a candle on with her mind, and was admitted to the clinic on suspicion of illness. The clinic claimed cremation at 10:00 AM, with logs showing someone visiting the body at 10:20.
“She was burned at 10. But someone visited her or checked up on her at 10:20.” — Risa, s8
The clinic name: Dawn Mercy. Risa relocated to the Glomangol Inn to wait for the party (3-5 PM daily for two weeks).
Session 10 — the abduction confirmed
After Harvo’s funeral, the party returned to Umbrafall. Risa’s update was disappointing — the party were prioritising the Black Vein Quarry. The party then went to the Dawn Mercy Clinic. Caelumn’s three-nat-20 Intimidation broke the orderly Drew:
“They were Aurelians. They came a few days ago. They had papers. They weren’t looking for patients. They already had a name. Mira Hale … they were taking her back to Aurelia.” — Drew, [7]
The party returned and broke the news to Risa. She was already in her cups by then; “she’s never coming back” [4]. Vasquez vowed to burn the place to the ground if Mira was harmed.
Relationships
- Mira Hale — sister, abducted to Aurelia, confirmed alive as of four days before s10.
- Dawn Mercy Clinic — the cover. Coerced rather than complicit (per Drew’s confession).
- Aurelian forces — the actual abductors.
- The party — committed to investigating during Aurelia transit (s10).
- Nightwatch — paid off by the Aurelians; corrupt against her interests.

Disposition toward the party
Trusting, despairing. The party are her only available recourse; she knows they may not be enough.
Status as of session 16
Alive. Last on-screen at the Glomangol Inn in Umbrafall, drinking heavily and despondent. The party’s commitment to investigate Mira’s captivity in Aurelia remains active.
