The regenerating kobold was an unnamed kobold (“He’s a kobold. Could be.”, [41]) that joined the fight in the cell block of the ridge temple in session 22, jumping out of a hiding place under the floor tiles of a cell the party had already searched [31][5]. Every wound dealt to it healed at once [42][9][10][13], until Terry’s Study action found “a small painting of a kobold that seems to be horribly aged and deadly wounded” under a tile [18]. When Caelumn set a Create Bonfire under the painting, the kobold aged, lost its arm and head, and exploded [43][36].

Overview

The regenerating kobold was a small kobold that joined the fight in the cell block of the ridge temple in session 22, while the party was still struggling with the living skin. The DM’s word for it is kobold: when Terry worried about a breath weapon, the DM said “He’s a kobold. Could be.” [21]. It was never named; “the regenerating kobold” is this wiki’s title for it.

It had been in the cell block all along, “hiding underneath the tiles” of a cell the party had already searched [5]. That is most plausibly the cell Father Thomas checked in session 21 on a Perception roll of nine [22].

Appearance and demeanour

“About like the height of Hugo’s knees”, shown to the table in a picture [23]. The DM played it as a gleeful taunter: it came back to the fight with “I’m back, bitches!” and met each wound with a jibe [24][9][13].

Abilities as played

  • Hiding. It stood “incredibly still” under the floor tiles and was not found by the earlier search [25].
  • A burning scroll. As Terry rolled a natural 20, it sprang out with a clicking noise as a scroll burned, and Terry had to reroll: still a hit, but without the critical [26]. The table took this as the DM spending the “Silvery Barbs counter” he had added a point to earlier; he named no mechanism [1][4].
  • Wounds that close. Every wound healed at once: Hugo’s 16, Terry’s stab, an arm that “just magically uh regrows”, and Caelumn’s force Sorcerous Burst [7][9][10][13]. The DM allowed that Terry’s Bladesong attacks count as magical, which changed nothing [27].
  • Slippery and spiteful. It failed a Command to flee on a Wisdom save of five and dashed off [28], slipped Hugo’s grapple on a natural 20 and stabbed him for 10 [29].

“the rest of you see the kobold like violently start to change age as all the injuries over the ages start to come back to him as he loses his arm, his head and he explodes and that’s the end of initiative” — Nick (DM), [36]

History in the campaign

Session 22: The Dragon in the Statue

Main article: Session 22

As Terry rolled a natural 20 on the living skin, a small kobold jumped out of a hiding place and a scroll burned, forcing a reroll that kept the hit but lost the critical [26]. Father Thomas’s Command made it flee, and Hugo’s opportunity attack healed at once [37]. It returned when the skin died and shrugged off a stab, a severed arm and Caelumn’s Sorcerous Burst [38]. It slipped Hugo’s grapple on a natural 20 and stabbed him for 10 [29]. Terry’s Study action found a painting of the kobold, horribly aged and wounded, under a tile; Caelumn burned it with Create Bonfire, and the kobold aged, lost its arm and head, and exploded [18][20].

Status

As of session 22. Dead, killed by Caelumn’s Create Bonfire on its painting [20]. The painting burned with it [39]. Where it got the scroll, whom it served and who made the painting are not known [31][40][18].
