The Reef Stalker is one of the three new creature types in the s17 cold-water reef-line encounter [8], ongoing into s18). Mike’s History check of 16 named it as a “rather large monstrosity that has really powerful claws and bite attacks” [6] - specifically identifying it as the creature that jumped on the skiff when the water erupted. It is distinct from the Brinemaw Wyrm (the bigger serpentine creature Mike trapped in Phantasmal Force) and from the Rimeclaw Skulkers (the smaller water-borne icicle-spitters). The Reef Stalker’s specific combat beats are not cleanly pinned to a single turn in the transcript - the DM’s targeting calls during the fight referred mostly to “the big guy” (the Wyrm) and “the little ones” (water wolves) - so most of what is known about the Reef Stalker is its profile from Mike’s History rather than its actions.
Overview
The Reef Stalker is one of three boss-grade aquatic monstrosities in the cold-water frost-zone reef encounter in the southern stretch of the Sapphire Sea (alongside the Brinemaw Wyrm and the Rimeclaw Skulker). Combat is ongoing at session end - initiative ran past time mid-Round 3 [4] and will resume in s18.
The Reef Stalker is the creature Mike’s History check at DC 16 identified by name [2]. The check covered “the creature that jumped on the skiff” - that is, the creature that triggered the encounter by erupting from beneath the skiff and knocking Caelumn, Steven, and Mike prone [5].
Combat profile (per Mike’s History 16, [6]
- Rather large monstrosity with “really powerful claws and bite attacks”.
- Other features (resistances, HP, AC, ranged options) are not in transcript.
Distinguishing from the other two creature types
The s17 encounter introduced three new creature types plus a wolf pack:
- Reef Stalker (this article): Large monstrosity with claws and bite, the one Mike’s History 16 named [6].
- Brinemaw Wyrm: Larger, serpentine, fins, frost-breath cone line attack, the creature trapped in Mike’s Phantasmal Force lava cube. Hugo’s “big serpent, dragon, thing”.
- Rimeclaw Skulker: Smaller, in the water, pokes head above water to fire ranged icicle-spit. At least two in play.
- Water wolves: 3-4 quadrupedal swimmers on the deck with luminous purplish-blue blood.
Because the DM’s in-fight target calls leaned on shorthand (“the big guy”, “the little dude”, “the one right next to it”), no on-screen kill or specific damage event in the s17 transcript is cleanly attributable to the Reef Stalker. The wiki status is therefore “alive (combat ongoing)” until s18 resolves which creature each beat applied to.
Status as of session 17
Alive, combat ongoing. Resolution deferred to s18.
Status as of session 18
Unresolved (off-screen). The Reef Stalker was not referenced on-screen during s18 combat. The s18 reef-line resumption [7] involved only the Brinemaw Wyrm and one small water-borne creature (a Rimeclaw Skulker or surviving water wolf; see those entries for the DM verbal-slip note); no separate Reef Stalker beat is in the transcript. The DM’s closing line at [3] - “as the last shapes vanish beneath the reef, the water closes over it” - implies all remaining hostiles dispersed or died, but does not confirm the Reef Stalker’s specific fate.
Treat the Reef Stalker as off-screen / unresolved until a future session pivots back to the reef-line site. Practically the party has moved on from this stretch of the Sapphire Sea (they swam to landfall in s18 and are now inland on the Aurelian road), so a future pivot back is unlikely; treat the Reef Stalker as a bestiary entry that may or may not return rather than as an active threat.
