The Phase Spider is the blink-mechanic ambush predator that dropped from the ceiling of an eastern storeroom in The Warrens beneath Umbrafall in session 6, in what the recap remembers as one of the worst opening-round combats of the campaign. The creature scored two natural twenties in three turns, downed and paralysed both Caelumn and Harvo for an in-fiction hour each, and triggered the first on-screen activation of Hugo’s Onyx Ring of Barbed Hooks when Hugo was reduced to 0 HP — the demonic-blade feature dealt 1d8 necrotic back to the spider and restored Hugo to 4 HP. Terry dropped it on a held-action true-strike crossbow shot when it teleported out of a portal directly above him.

Overview

The Phase Spider is the blink-mechanic ambush predator that dropped from the ceiling of an eastern storeroom in The Warrens in session 6, while Caelumn was opening crates after the party’s long rest [4]. The recap flatly describes the encounter as “bad”: the spider phased through portals between turns, scored two natural twenties in three rounds, and downed and paralysed for one in-fiction hour both Caelumn and Harvo. The creature is the only enemy in the campaign so far to use a true blink mechanic on the party.

The fight is also the campaign’s first on-screen activation of the demonic-blade self-revive feature on Hugo’s Onyx Ring of Barbed Hooks: when Hugo was reduced to 0 HP rather than killed outright, the ring dealt 1d8 necrotic back to the spider and restored Hugo to 4 HP [5]. The Black Mask’s pact had been four sessions silent up to that point.

Terry killed the spider on a held-action true-strike crossbow shot when it teleported out of a portal directly above him (held action declared at [6]; resolution at [7].

Status as of session 16

Dead. Single-encounter creature; the body was left in the storeroom and the party moved on into the Maze of the Minotaur toward Maelis Dirn and the Titan. The phase spider is referenced in Hugo’s and the Black Mask’s articles as the moment the pact ring’s mechanical reality became unambiguous.
