The Phase Spider is the ceiling ambusher that dropped on Caelumn in a storeroom of The Warrens beneath Umbrafall in session 6 and blinked through portals between bites [33][8]. Its poison left Caelumn and Harvo paralysed for an hour and its bites dropped Hugo as well, which started a table argument over whether his Onyx Ring of Barbed Hooks revived him [2][34]. Terry killed it with a readied hand-crossbow shot as it came out of a portal [11].

Overview

The Phase Spider is a spider that was waiting on the ceiling of an eastern storeroom in The Warrens when Caelumn opened a crate after the party’s rest [6]. The DM never gives it a name; “Phase Spider” is this wiki’s title, taken from the way it moved through portals [7][8].

The fight went badly for the party. Its bites left Caelumn and Harvo poisoned and paralysed for an hour [2], it dropped Hugo as well, and at one point the table counted three natural 20s in a row [9][10]. It died to Terry’s readied crossbow shot [11].

Abilities as played

  • Ambush from above. It waited about ten feet up on the ceiling, which sent the table into a long argument over whether Hugo could reach it [12][13].
  • Blinking. It backed into a portal and came out beside its next target, and vanished from sight mid-fight and reappeared beside whoever was readied for it [8][14][15][16][17].
  • A poisonous bite, twice a turn. The DM gave 13 piercing and 10 poison on Caelumn, 14 piercing and six poison on Harvo, and on Hugo 12 piercing and 13 poison, then 12 piercing and 30 poison on a natural 20 [18][19][15][10]. The poison paralysed for an hour but did not kill [2].
  • Defences. It shrugged off Terry’s Tasha’s Hideous Laughter with a save of 16 [20]. Hugo’s blows took off a leg and opened its abdomen [7][21], and Terry’s Jim’s Magic Missile left it “just barely staying on the wall” [22][23].

Disposition towards the party

A predator, not a thinker. When Caelumn went down the DM said it “doesn’t perceive you as a threat” and turned to the next target [26]. After the argument over Hugo’s revive the DM had it “very very confused” as it disappeared from sight, and it came back at the readied Terry [27][28].

As Caelumn inspected a crate, a drop of saliva fell on his shoulder and the DM called initiative with the creature on the ceiling above him [6]. It downed Caelumn, then Harvo on a natural 20, and the DM ruled both poisoned and paralysed for an hour [24][2]. Hugo’s natural 20 took off a leg; another natural 20 dropped Hugo [31][7][10]. Hugo said the ring’s cursed energy struck back and left him on 4 hit points, the DM ruled that the ring acts after Hugo’s own feature and kills him if its strike fails to kill the attacker, and Hugo answered “my other feature” and rose [3]. Terry’s readied shot killed the spider as it pounced from a portal [4].

Status

As of session 6. Dead. Vasquez drew a vial of its venom for Hugo, Hugo suggested chucking the body into a corner, and the party barricaded the storeroom and long-rested [32]. Open question for the DM: did the Onyx Ring’s revive fire against the spider, or did Hugo rise on his other feature [3]?
