Nessa’s husband is an unnamed civilian whom Aurelian officers took “into the road offices” three nights before the party met his wife Nessa on the open sea in session 17 [6]. The officers searched the family’s home, found “old tide charts weather notes and a few pages copied from his father’s journal” and called it unauthorised studies. He has never been seen on screen, and his name and fate are unknown.
Overview
Nessa’s husband is never seen, and unnamed. Everything known of him comes from Nessa’s account to the party on the open Sapphire Sea in session 17 [1]. Three nights earlier, Aurelian officers had searched the family’s home, found old tide charts, weather notes and pages copied from his father’s journal, called it unauthorised studies, and taken him “into the road offices”. He had not come back. Where the family lives is not stated, and Nessa does not say whether the officers kept the papers.
The DM’s reading is that the road offices are local Aurelian patrol or administrative offices, not a new faction, and that “unauthorised studies” probably means suspected illegal magic or heretical research (DM ruling 7). Nothing in the papers implies magic on its face. His case may belong to a broader pattern of Aurelian abductions alongside the Mira Hale case (sessions 7 to 10), but the structure is unknown and the cases are not shown to be linked (DM ruling 27).
Relationships
- Nessa: his wife, who took their children to sea after he was taken [4].
- Pim and Leo: his children [5].
- Aurelian forces: the officers who searched his home and detained him [6].
Notable quotes
“my husband was taken three nights ago into the road offices they searched our home and found old tide charts weather notes and a few pages copied from his father’s journal and the officers called it unauthorized studies what does that even mean … and he hasn’t returned three nights” — Nessa, [1]
History in the campaign
Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw
Main article: Session 17
He is known only at one remove. When the party asked why she was alone at sea, Nessa told them her husband “was taken three nights ago into the road offices” and had not returned, after officers found tide charts, weather notes and journal pages in the house and called them unauthorised studies [7]. She had taken the children to sea, bound for Eldwythe, until weather left them without food and a boat that could not sail [8]. Terry quipped about banning books [9], and the party moved on to directions for the family [10].
Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road
Main article: Session 18
He is again off-screen. In the players’ recap of session 17 that opened the session, Terry repeated that Nessa’s husband had been taken three nights earlier by Aurelian road officers on a charge of unauthorised studies, “which is a bit alarming” [11]. The DM stepped in to confirm that the wife’s name is Nessa [12].
Status
As of session 18. Captured, on Nessa’s account. Where he is held, whether he is alive and what his name is are all unknown [1].
