Nancy is the small girl Cholmondeley saved from execution by the military, the reason he is on the run, and she was travelling with him when the recorded sessions began. After a night left alone with the cart in the rain she walked out on him with a memorably rude farewell [22], then came back in session 3 to be given his holy symbol at his funeral and to ask to stay with the party. The party left her in Wyrmbough Grove, and she has not appeared on screen since.

Overview

Nancy is the small girl Cholmondeley saved from execution by the military; saving her is the reason he is on the run [5][6]. She was already travelling with him, and with his cart and horses, when the first recorded session began in Wyrmbough Grove [7].

Left beside the cart in the rain all night during the corrupted-grove expedition, she saw through Cholmondeley’s excuse the next morning and left with the abuse quoted below [2]. She came back in session 3, was given his holy symbol after his death and asked to stay with the party [8]. The table split, then leaned towards taking her to Sevryn, but by session 4 she had been left in the village [9][10].

Appearance and demeanour

A small child, guessed at five by Caelumn in jest and at “six or seven” when he asked again [11][12]. Direct and sarcastic with adults. She asked Cholmondeley exactly where she was meant to watch the cart [13], told him he sounded like her mother [14], and held him to the letter of his order when she came back [15]. She is unsentimental about death as well: told that the dragon had killed him, she answered that he was old [16].

Relationships

  • Cholmondeley: her rescuer and guardian. She resented being forgotten, but remembered his warning that the world was not safe [17]. Killed in session 3.
  • Sunny: the halfling merchant, who would not take a child on as an assistant [18].
  • Aurelian forces: the military that would have executed her [6]. Cholmondeley himself wore the sigils of Aurelia’s military [19].
  • Caelumn: the party member who most firmly opposed taking her along, on the grounds of her safety [20].

Disposition towards the party

Wary of Cholmondeley after the night in the rain, but not of the party as a whole. She asked to stay with it three times in one scene, reasoning that people who had killed a dragon could teach her to defend herself [21].

History in the campaign

Session 2: The Bark, the Dryad, and the Riddle that Wasn’t a Tree

Nancy was already in the party’s company. Cholmondeley talked her into minding the cart in the middle of town rather than coming into the corrupted grove, on a Persuasion check, and she made him promise to come back for her [24]. Later he sounded out Sunny about taking her on and was told “You can’t sell a child.” [25]. The party forgot her overnight. In the morning she was asleep, wet and cold, beside the cart; when his Deception check failed she called him a liar and walked off [26][2].

Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley

The session opened with Nancy turning back as she walked away: “well, you’re just gonna fucking let me leave? hello? hello?” She agreed to mind the cart again [27]. The DM, pressed on whether the dryad’s riddle had been fair, said she had rolled a 3 and been right: “The child’s more intelligent than the druid.” [28]. After the funeral fire she was given Cholmondeley’s holy symbol and asked to stay. Hugo agreed and Caelumn refused. Vasquez proposed taking her along to leave with Sevryn, and Caelumn gave way [29].

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

Nancy is off-screen. Opening the session, the players disagreed about what had become of her. Hugo and Vasquez settled it: she had been left in the village and was no longer part of the group [10]. The cart was gone because, the DM said, “a small child took it”, so with no horse the party set off on foot [30]. Terry, new to the party, spoke of Cholmondeley’s ward as left behind, since taking a young girl along would not have been right [31].

Status

As of session 4. Alive as far as anyone knows, left in Wyrmbough Grove with Cholmondeley’s holy symbol [32][4]. She has not appeared on screen since session 3.
