Mharos is the half-demon-elf parasite that took up residence inside Vasquez during the Black Vein Quarry arc in session 9. Vasquez accepted its bargain mid-fight under the impression he was negotiating; in fact he was being colonised. The transformation rewrote Vasquez’s race from elf to half-demon-elf, replaced his face scars and oral bracing with horns, runes, and ember eyes, and granted partial necrotic resistance. Mharos has refused all subsequent negotiation, identifies itself as “what remains when fear is carried too long and hope is set down” [2], where it named itself Empraros - an uncertain alias and possibly a deeper name), and feeds on group misery rather than just the host’s. The transcript-rendered forms Marovs and Marajos are Whisper drift for Mharos. As of session 16, the relationship is openly adversarial, with Vasquez slamming his head into walls during rests to feed Mharos his own pain rather than letting the parasite manipulate the party [10].
Historical note on the name
The transcripts render the parasite’s name in multiple forms: Mharos (canonical, per the DM corrections register post-s17), Marovs (transcript drift), and Marajos (transcript drift in s15). The parasite also names itself Empraros in [2] - that form is kept as an uncertain alias and possibly a deeper / older name for the same entity rather than transcript drift. Older wikilinks resolve via the aliases above.
Overview
Mharos is the half-demon-elf parasite that hosts inside Vasquez. It introduced itself in session 9 during the Black Vein Quarry arc, mid-fight with quarry specters: a presence settled beside Vasquez offering to help him hold the weight he carried, and Vasquez reached back. The DM described pain “blooming white-hot as nerves scream and your vision blurs” as horns tore through Vasquez’s skull [1]. The parasite did not negotiate; it colonised.
Mharos is the campaign’s clearest example of a bargain mistaken for a deal. Vasquez believed he was making a contract; Mharos in s10 corrected the record:
“Oh, but you misunderstood the standard. There is no deal. There is only this. There is only me feeding on your delicious misery. … You and I will become one. You will be my terrible sword that sweeps across Eldurae and they will all bow to us.”
- Mharos, [11]
It is satisfied by group misery, including the deaths of party members. Its weakness is radiant damage (revealed [6] when an Aurelian Paladin’s radiant-rider greatsword bypassed the necrotic resistance Mharos had given Vasquez). The Black Mask knows about it and considers it a rival over Vasquez’s soul.
Appearance and demeanour
Mharos has no fixed body. Its first manifestation outside Vasquez’s head was on Vasquez’s watch in s10 - “a smoking shadowy figure with burning red eyes” at the edge of camp [12]. In s15 it appeared to Vasquez during a smoke-bomb escape as a near-physical figure 5 centimetres from Vasquez’s face. It speaks in Vasquez’s head ordinarily; outside that head it manifests as smoke and shadow.
Through Vasquez’s body it is visible at all times: horns, runes, ember eyes, the original mage-slaying bars-in-mouth fallen out and the face scars healed. Vasquez no longer reads as an elf to anyone meeting him for the first time.
History / role in the campaign
Session 9 - transformation
Mid-fight in the Black Vein Quarry, an unseen presence offered Vasquez a bargain to take the weight he carried. Vasquez accepted. Pain bloomed; horns tore through; the metal bars holding his mouth closed fell out; his face healed. His race changed from elf to half-demon-elf. The parasite introduced itself in his head, giving the name Empraros - an uncertain alias that may be a deeper or older name for Mharos:
“I am Empraros. I am what remains when fear is carried too long and hope is set down. They buried me because I would not stop spreading that weight. You feel it already. That’s why I could reach you.”
“I am more of a concept than a thing. I am what remains when hope is given up and misery gets to breed.”
A wight in the upper quarry asked an unsettling question implying Mharos had offered the same bargain to others before:
“What makes you so special? Why did it succeed with you?”
Later in the same session, after Hugo (dominated by a succubus) killed Harvo with a hand-axe critical, Mharos reported being “weirdly enough, a little bit happy about what’s happening in the group right now” [13].
Session 10 - refusal to negotiate
On Vasquez’s watch, Mharos manifested in smoke-and-shadow form for the first time. Vasquez tried to negotiate a partnership; Mharos refused entirely:
“There is no deal. There is only this. There is only me feeding on your delicious misery. … You and I will become one. You will be my terrible sword that sweeps across Eldurae and they will all bow to us.”
Later that session, an Aurelian Paladin’s radiant-rider greatsword bypassed Mharos’s necrotic resistance [6]. Radiant damage was confirmed as Mharos’s tactical weakness. After Vasquez vowed to Risa that the party would burn Aurelia to the ground if her sister was harmed, Mharos in his head delivered: “Pathetic” [14].
Session 12 - the Black Mask names Mharos
The Black Mask, summoned by Hugo’s pact ring, named Mharos as a rival over Vasquez’s soul [7]: “I do have my eye on the one they call Vasquez. He has unlocked something that should probably have been locked away.” And: “Once he’s dead, the demon has no hold of him.” This is the first explicit confirmation that the Mask and Mharos are aware of each other and competing.
Session 15 - the smoke manifestation (Whisper drift to “Marajos”)
When the Aurelian patrol arrived in the clearing outside Eldwythe to demand Althea’s surrender, Mharos whispered telepathically into Vasquez’s head (this is the session where the Whisper transcript renders the name as “Marajos” - a transcript drift for Mharos):
“This is your chance. Blame the arcane on her.”
Vasquez refused, walked ten feet, raised his hand, and took the blame himself. The Aurelian elite responded by decapitating Ruin with a chain. During Phil Flowerforge’s smoke-bomb escape, Mharos manifested in smoke and tried to harm Caelumn directly via Wisdom save attack:
“I have tried to be patient. I have tried letting you see your grand purpose, which is bringing this world to its knees. Fine. If you won’t bring me others’ misery, I’ll settle for yours.”
Vasquez used his Mage Slayer once-per-day fail-to-succeed to defeat the manipulation. He then headbutted the smoke-figure: “Yeah, you’re trapped in my mind. I make the fucking rules for right now. … feed on me and me alone and you’ll have what you’ll want” [16].
Session 16 - host imposes terms
During a sewer rest, Vasquez slammed his head into a wall (1d4 bludgeoning self-inflicted) to feed Mharos the host’s pain rather than letting the parasite manipulate the party [10]. The relationship is now openly adversarial, with Vasquez imposing the terms of feeding.
Relationships
- Vasquez - host. The relationship is parasitic, adversarial, and as of s16 host-managed.
- The Black Mask - rival. Both have a claim on Vasquez’s soul; the Mask considers Mharos a competitor.
- Bison - Vasquez’s adopted dwarf father, named in the succubus-induced failure-vision in s9. Mharos’s first taunt to Vasquez referenced him: “If only you could have been the dwarf your father wanted you to be - but now you carry something much worse inside of you, something that would make him recoil” (s9, succubus speaking in Mharos’s voice or vice versa - the recap treats the entity as fluid).

Disposition toward the party
Hostile. Treats the party as a buffet. Has explicitly stated its goal is bringing Eldurae to its knees through Vasquez [17]. The host’s body is its current vehicle.
Status as of session 16
Active inside Vasquez. Currently being fed Vasquez’s self-inflicted pain rather than the party’s misery. Tactical weakness: radiant damage. The Black Mask has stated the parasite’s grip ends with Vasquez’s death.
