FactionThe Warrens, Coven Filth, Bio-gloom shipping operation

Maelis Dirn, also known as “Coven Filth”, was the boss of The Warrens beneath Umbrafall and the campaign’s third major-arc antagonist. She ran a protection racket via leather-masked collectors, a soul-binding experimentation operation with humans bearing injection ports, and a forged shipping ledger routing bio-gloom toxin through Duskwatch to Velkris. She was the first NPC other than Hugo himself and The Black Mask to recognise Project Veilbreak-style alteration on Hugo, naming “the project’s work” on him on sight [3]. Maelis Dirn recognized Project Veilbreak-style alteration, but her exact relationship to the Ascendancy is unconfirmed. She was killed by the Titan after Hugo freed it (s6) - the Titan, freed of her control once Hugo destroyed all five fungal nodes, turned on her and slammed her with two boulders, the second a natural 20 for 34 damage that reduced her to “a fine mist into the ground” [6]. Her soul was captured into the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring she had been wearing, looted by the party, and is currently in Caelumn’s possession.

Overview

Maelis Dirn, called “Coven Filth” by the Black Hollow Market traders she shook down, was the boss of The Warrens beneath Umbrafall. She ran a protection racket on the Market, kept a giant minion called the Titan on a soul-bound leash via a custom Soulbinder’s Packed Ring, and operated a bio-gloom experimentation facility with humans bearing injection ports. A forged shipping ledger found in her research desk routed bio-gloom toxin through Duskwatch toward Velkris — implying a wider trafficking operation behind her local racket.

Her death is one of the campaign’s signature DM moments: her own creation, the Titan, freed of her control by Hugo’s destruction of all five fungal nodes, turned to her, declared “no more”, and slammed her with two boulders. The second was a natural 20 for 34 damage, and the DM pronounced her reduced to “a fine mist into the ground” [6]. Her soul was packed into the ring and is now in Caelumn’s carrying.

Appearance and demeanour

Witch-flavoured human caster. The party first met her in person mid-fight, partially concealed behind walls of the Maze of the Minotaur, firing arcane bursts in pairs from cover. She wore a personal shimmering barrier that imposed disadvantage on attacks against her and resisted damage. She controlled the Titan via the soulbinder ring on her finger.

Her notes on the Titan read in the cool flat voice of an experimenter (“Tri-cap bio-gloom. Cultiver binds soul thread. Three nodes to hold the weave. Two pulses to seal.”). In speech, she was vicious. She took taunting personally and dished it out fluently: “you really are pathetic” was her assessment of Vasquez (s6).

History / role in the campaign

Sessions 4-5 — referenced

The Broker named her in s4 as the contract target, framed her as someone “bleeding the market with her own racket” [7]. The party trailed her collectors to a hatch entrance to The Warrens in s4. Session 5 was a tunnel-and-ambush descent without engaging her directly; she was the implicit boss of the warren but did not appear.

Session 6 — first meeting and the project recognition

The party broke into her research desk room and found a stack of papers describing the Titan binding ritual — soul-thread woven through fungal nodes, originally written as three-node, updated to five. They also found the Duskwatch shipping ledger, forged documents routing bio-gloom toxin through Duskwatch toward Velkris. Hugo kept the papers. They recognised the experimental approach as different from his own Project Veilbreak backstory but adjacent enough to flag.

She appeared in person mid-Titan-fight, firing arcane bursts at exposed targets through a shimmering damage-resistant barrier. She marked Vasquez with the soulbinder ring and commanded the Titan to crush him. When she saw Hugo she recognised Project Veilbreak-style alteration on him on sight:

“Liar. I see the project’s work on you. You work for them and you will die and you will become a pet.” — Maelis Dirn, [3]

This is the first in-fiction confirmation by a non-Hugo, non-Mask source that Hugo carries the project’s signature. Maelis Dirn recognized Project Veilbreak-style alteration, but her exact relationship to the Ascendancy is unconfirmed. Whether she was operationally connected to the umbrella, an outside practitioner who recognised related work, or something else, the campaign has not pinned down.

Session 7 — death

The Titan boss fight resumed and resolved. Hugo sprinted the maze on his s6 vision-buff (80 ft of movement for 10 minutes) and destroyed each of the five fungal nodes anchoring the Titan’s regeneration. With the fifth node destroyed, the Titan rose larger and angrier than before — but it took one look at Maelis through the ring she was using to control it, declared “no more”, and slammed her with two boulders. The first did 15 bludgeoning damage. The second was a natural 20 for 34 damage. Maelis was reduced to a fine mist into the ground [6]. The Titan shrunk, looked at Hugo “before disappearing forever”, and was gone.

Investigation of her remains by Terry and Hugo (Investigation 11 with advantage) yielded a coin purse with 50gp, 2 vials of bio-gloom toxin, and the cracked, magical ring — identified by the Broker as a Soulbinder’s Packed Ring. Her soul was inside the ring, captured by its hit-zero-HP-trigger mechanic.

Relationships

  • The Titan — her creation and her killer. A previously-existing humanoid (orc-like, recognised by Hugo from a vision-flashback) bound to five fungal nodes via her ritual.
  • The Broker — commercial rival. Hired the party against her.
  • Hugo — recognized Project Veilbreak-style alteration on him on sight; tried to kill him with the Titan. Her exact relationship to the Ascendancy is unconfirmed.
  • Caelumn — current carrier of her soul, packed into the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring (s7 onwards).
  • Duskwatch / Velkris — destinations for her forged-ledger bio-gloom shipments.

Notable quotes

“Liar. I see the project’s work on you. You work for them and you will die and you will become a pet.” — to Hugo, [3]

“Real power, is it?” — to Vasquez, after crushing his chest, [8]

“stop! stop! you’re ruining everything!” — voice drifting through the maze when Hugo killed the first node, s6

Disposition toward the party

Hostile. Recognised Hugo as enemy on sight. Treated the rest as obstacles.

Status as of session 16

Dead. Soul stored in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring currently carried by Caelumn. Per the ring’s mechanic, the soul can be summoned as a CR-equivalent ally for 5 rounds; the party has not yet summoned her.
