PlayerJon

Kole is a changeling warlock from Arcanthys, by his player’s own statements in play, played by Jon from session 23 onwards in the seat that Trey left [66][88][35]. Sent to help the party with the Egg, and pointed their way by Sevryn after “a very powerful individual” he does not name had set him on his path, he met them as a prisoner: they freed him from a cultist in the ridge temple who was taking him to be sacrificed [1][3][140][80]. He looks human but for his amber-orange eyes, dresses like a noble, carries a lute and no weapon, still wears his broken manacles, and fights with green eldritch fire, Mind Sliver and Armor of Agathys [60][158][56][57]. His patron, his surname, his true face and his level are not stated.

Appearance and personality

Kole looks human, and is not. His player described him at the introductions that followed his rescue:

“he looks like a human uh apart from he has this really weird like ambery orange kind of eyes that definitely don’t look really that human” — Kole, [56]

He dresses well: “really fancy dark green and purple clothes covered in like a traveling cloak”, with “nice sets of rings on his finger”, so that “he looks like a noble or someone at least well off”, and he is “very clean despite being down here” [56]. He has a lute on his back and no weapon, “he doesn’t really have any weapons by the looks of it”, and “he’s still got broken manacles around his wrists”, which his player means him to go on wearing [56][57]. When he casts, “my armor kind of shows from underneath my fine clothes” [58]; whether that is armour he wears or the working of a spell is not stated. His magic burns green: “a strange, almost green fire” when he teleports, “green kind of green and fire” when he attacks, and at the session’s end “green and yellow eldritch fire” [59][60][61]. All of this is his player’s description of his own character. The look is a chosen one, since he is a changeling (see Background), and what lies under it has not been shown. From late in session 23 he also wears a dead cultist’s robes over his own clothes, with the hood up [62].

The DM’s own words for the way he moves are “almost like a uh trained boxer” and “you seem very nimble so far” [63][64].

His manner is playful and unhurried. Called a heretic to his face soon after he was freed, he answered with “a little smirk” and a tune on his lute, and his player was at pains to say that “he says it in a very playful way. Like, he’s not in a hostile mood at all.” [65][66]. He is sure of himself, “This is easy. Don’t worry.” in the middle of the first fight and “We don’t need to long rest. Come on, guys. We could do this.” in the second, although by his player’s own account “i’ve got the like the lowest hp max in the party” [67][68][69]. He is reverent towards dragons: before the statue where Rime hides he “just kind of goes down to one knee”, and he told Father Thomas to “show some respect for an older being such as that” [70][71]. And he keeps score. “You know I’ve made next to Father Thomas’ name so far is Coward.”, he said in the second fight, and at the close his player had “started making notes on everyone as to who who Kole likes at the moment” [72][73].

Background

Arcanthys

Kole comes from Arcanthys, by his player’s statement. In character he was coy about it. When Father Thomas called him a heretic, he said:

“Well, where I come from, you would likely be tortured for even saying that to me. But that’s not where we are. Where we are is where we are.” — Kole, [65]

His player then named the place in an aside to the table, “I mean, you don’t know I’m from Arcanthys, but yeah.” [66], and when Terry claimed the same city, Kole’s reply said it in character: “oh you’re also from Arcanthys” [74][75]. He had never met a tortle there: “I can’t say that I’ve ever met any of your kind, and especially any that look like you” [76].

What an Arcanthan knows of Aurelia the DM supplied, as something Kole would know:

“You definitely know this, Kole, because Arcanthys has been in open confrontation with Aurelia for quite a while, and now it’s kind of a Cold War, sort of. And you know that if anyone is seen practicing arcane magic within Aurelian Borders, they are rapidly executed.” — Nick (DM), [18]

The errand

Kole was sent. His first words to the party, put into Caelumn’s mind before the rescue, were “I was sent to assist you with the dragon egg but it appears I have been captured and I will be needing your help to get out of this” [3]. He gave himself away soon after the introductions by asking about the Egg before anyone had mentioned it, “I mean, I’m more concerned where the egg is. Can I see it?”, and the DM had the party notice: “you guys realize that he just spoke about the egg you have never told him about the egg” [77][78][79].

His account, in his player’s words throughout, was that he “was sent on the path by a very powerful individual”, whom he did not name, and then “encountered a lovely dragonborn”, Sevryn, who “guided me or at least told me where i might be able to find you” [80]. Terry had already guessed the second half, “Let me guess, what’s his name? Sevryn.”, and Kole confirmed it: “it was indeed” [81][56]. The DM filled in the rest. The meeting was “roughly three days” back [82], and of “Sevryn’s words, all that was said was there’s a group of adventurers currently actively tries to use the egg to save the world.”, with the rider “He didn’t say that the egg was in their position. Sorry, possession.” [83]. So Sevryn pointed Kole at the party without telling him that the Egg is lost. Where the two met, and who the “very powerful individual” is, is not stated.

How he came to be a prisoner is also his own account. He had been following the party’s trail “until i was grabbed” [84], and he let it happen: “i guess i could have escaped but it seemed like they were going the right direction”, and “i was intrigued by it i was entertained i wanted to see where they were taking me as soon as she mentioned sacrifice then i was kind of out of here” [85][86]. He speaks of “a whole group of cultists” [86]; on screen there was one cultist with four undead. Where he was seized is not said.

A changeling

Kole is a changeling, by his player’s account and by what he showed on screen. He hinted at it first, in the talk about getting into Aurelia: “I have a way to, not through means of magic, alter how I look.” [87]. Then he showed them: “he kind of holds out his hand as it kind of like all the color kind of fades from it it turns to like pure white like you see with with kind of changelings”, and the words that follow name it, “that he is a changeling”, before the hand went back to the “skin color um that he’s currently in” [88][89][90]. To “i thought you were a human” the answer was “afraid not” [91].

By his player’s account the change is bodily and no spell, “it’s not a spell” and “it counts like a permanent body change”, and it leaves his clothes as they are [92][93]. Terry asked the DM outright, “Nick ruling do changelings count as magic?” [24], and the DM did not answer; Terry’s “Yeah, I’m assuming it’s fine.” [94] is a player’s assumption. Whether Aurelian detection would notice a changeling’s shift is therefore open.

He does not change lightly: “I like looking like this for now but if i need to change then i will but it is a lot of hassle and it’s uncomfortable and i don’t like it” [26]. Pressed to take a dead cultist’s shape, he refused, “you just assume because I’m a changeling that we just want to look like anything random all the time”, and put on her robes instead: “I’m not going to change what I look like, but I’m pretty deceptive. I’ll just put on the robes.” [95][96]. His true face has not been seen. Terry’s “Well his true form is like a white amorphous blob.” is a joke, and Kole’s only answer was “but you’ll have to find out” [97][98].

What he offers the party is the use of it: if he can get a good look at the man who took the Egg, “I can, without means of magic, alter myself to look like that person” [99].

Build

  • Race: changeling, by his player’s statement, shown on screen [88][91].
  • Class: warlock. “because you know warlock” is how his player explained the strength of his Armor of Agathys, and Kole calls himself one: “Have faith in the warlock. My god is better.” [58][35]. He speaks of “my eldritch god” [100]. His patron is not named; in session 24 a remark in the exchange about being called a heretic has him say that he has one [39].
  • Level: not stated in play. By his player’s account he turned down a start at level five, “dm said oh you could set yourself to level five and i was like no no no it’s fine” [37]. The level up promised to the party for clearing the ridge temple is still pending [101][102]. His player said it again at the end of session 24: “I should have been five, guys.” [103][104].
  • Telepathy, which his player calls his “awakened mind” [3]. He spoke into Caelumn’s mind on sight and stayed linked to him through the fight, “Because I’m still connected to you, like, psychically.” [105]; later he did the same with Hugo, “you’re gonna hear a voice in your head hugo”, and relayed what he saw through a door [106][107]. Whether the link carries an answer is not settled: Caelumn replied in thought with “I don’t know if you can hear me back”, and Hugo’s “am I able to communicate back or just one way” got no ruling [108][109].
  • Misty Step [110][59], and apparently again in session 24 to get clear of the knight [111][112].
  • Suggestion and Phantasmal Force, both new on record: his Suggestion found no mind in the knight statue to take hold of, and the knight made its Intelligence save against his Phantasmal Force [113][114][115][116].
  • Mind Sliver: “a dc14 intelligence saving throw”, and verbal only, “this one is just verbal anyway”, which is why he could cast it with his hands bound [117][118].
  • Eldritch Blast: it needs free hands, “unfortunately my hands are bound so I cannot Eldritch Blast” [119]. One beam for now, by his own remark: “Wait till I get to next level so I can do two of them.” [120]. Against a spectre the DM seems to confirm its damage as force [121].
  • Armor of Agathys: “so i have 10 temporary hp” [58].
  • A reaction spell, not identified, used against a zombie’s critical hit: by his player’s description, a DC 14 Constitution save and a d4 off the roll, which could not turn a natural 20 into anything else [122][123]. He used it again in session 24, against a spectre’s touch, and the spectre made its Constitution save [124][125][126].
  • “that Eldritch Mind thing”, the DM’s words for one of his features; Kole’s answer was “yeah it’s only for enchantment and illusion spells” [127][117]. Not otherwise explained.
  • An “encouraging song”: playing his lute while the party recovered, he gave heroic inspiration to two companions [128][129][130].
  • Psychic damage: before play began, out of character, his player said “yeah I can change all my damage to psychic so I can just do that” [131]. It has not come up in play.
  • Unarmed: he carries no weapon, so his one opportunity attack was a slap [132][133].
  • Staying power: the lowest hit point maximum in the party, by his own account [68], and a spell slot that comes back on a short rest [134]. In session 24 a spectre’s touch took six from his maximum [135].

Equipment

See Kole’s loadout for the full list.

  • Fine clothes in dark green and purple, a travelling cloak and rings [56]. Nothing says the rings are magical.
  • A lute, carried on his back and played for his “encouraging song” [128][56]. In session 24 he used it to poke the first black orb out of a statue’s mouth, and the DM had the teeth close “where your lute was a second ago” [136]; Kole says it is now broken in half in his bag, with a backup instrument to hand, and Father Thomas offered to mend it, though nothing shows him doing so [137][138][139].
  • No weapon: “he doesn’t really have any weapons by the looks of it” [57].
  • The broken manacles: “rough-looking iron manacles” when he was first seen [4]. Terry cut the chain, and the cuffs are still on his wrists [140][57].
  • An uncommon magic item, not identified. The DM allows a new character one, and confirmed that Kole’s player had made his choice: “i don’t remember what he picked though oh yeah i see you got it” [1]. Terry had been expecting “the glamoured leather armour” [141]. In session 24, when Caelumn said that Hugo has plenty of magic items, Kole said “I don’t have any magic items.” [51], which sits oddly beside the item the DM confirmed for him; it may have been banter.
  • The cultist’s dagger, taken from the body of the woman who had captured him: “It definitely has runes inscribed on it, but it’s hard to tell.” [142][143][144]. Not confirmed magical. In session 24 he pricked his finger with a knife of his own, apparently this dagger, to feed the vampire-lord statue [145][146].
  • The dead cultist’s robes, stripped from her body, cleaned with a cantrip at his request, and worn over his own clothes with the hood up [147][148][62]. He still wore them in session 24, and found that they did not keep the mist hall’s fog off him [149][150].
  • The black orbs: the first, prised from a statue’s mouth, is in his bag; the second came out of the vampire-lord statue after Terry’s blood paid for it, and Kole said he would pass it to Terry [151][45][152][153].
  • The party inventory: the DM retired it after session 24; Kole declined to hold any of it, since he had not been there for it [154][155].

Campaign role

Kole joined the campaign in session 23 as Jon’s character, in the seat that Trey left. He came looking for the party: set on his path by “a very powerful individual” he will not name and pointed their way by Sevryn, he was sent to help with the Egg, and he let his captors keep him because they were going the right way [3][80][85]. The party freed him in the ridge temple, and he fought the rest of the session beside them with green eldritch fire. What he offers the Egg quest is more than firepower: a changeling from Arcanthys, he offered to take the face of the man who took the Egg, once he has had a good look at him [99][88]. Terry and Caelumn welcomed him; Father Thomas called him a heretic and does not yet trust him [156][157]. Who first sent him is still open.

Session by session

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

Main article: Session 23

Kole’s first session. A prisoner of a cultist in the ridge temple, on his way to be sacrificed, he spoke into Caelumn’s mind to say that he had been sent to help with the dragon egg [1][3]. He fought the ambush with his hands bound until Terry cut his chain, and once free his Armor of Agathys shattered the ghoul that bit him [140][58][158]. At the introductions he said that Sevryn had pointed him to the party, gave himself away by asking after the Egg before anyone had mentioned it, and showed that he is a changeling [79][80][88]. He took The cultist’s dagger, wore her robes to scout the mist hall, knelt before Rime’s statue, and ended the session shooting spectres off Father Thomas, who had called him a heretic [156][144][159][70][160].

Session 24: The Knight of Smoke

Main article: Session 24

The mist hall turned on Kole. He put his head in to test the dead cultist’s robes, failed a Wisdom save and was compelled further in; faces in the fog struck at his mind and a voice promised they would all die, and he came out concluding that the robes were no protection [161][162][163][150]. A spectre had already cost him six from his maximum hit points [135]. He prised the first black orb from a statue’s mouth with his lute, which he says it broke [136][151][138]. He answered Father Thomas’s wish to leave with “Do you have so little faith, Father Thomas?” and voted to stay [164][47]. Reasoning that the vampire-lord statue wanted blood, he talked Terry into paying it, and his Investigation found the hidden Dracolich statue [165][166][167][168].

Kole and the party

  • Terry took to him at once: “I’m so glad we’ve recruited a blaster now to join us.” and “We’ve got a glass cannon warlock.” during the fight [169][170], and after the reveal, “I’m down with it. I mean, he’s my bro.” [171]. Terry claims the same home city [74]. In session 24 Kole talked him into putting his wrist in the vampire-lord statue’s mouth, “a blood sacrifice” in Terry’s words, and said he would pass him the orb it gave up [166][153].
  • Caelumn was the first to hear him and the first to shake his hand, and was glad of the help: “with you joining us our our options have certainly gone up” [3][172][173]. Stuck blind in the mist in session 24, Kole urged him to come in and pull him out: “I have faith in you, Caelumn. Be a hero.” [42]. Caelumn, on no more than 13 hit points and with no spells, would not [174].
  • Father Thomas called him a heretic on meeting him, without heat by the priest’s own player’s account [156][175][176], cried “Help me, random person that we just saved. You owe us.” in the fight [177], and after the reveal said “I’m not sure we can trust this guy.” [157]. Kole for his part told him “I mean this in the nicest way Father Thomas I don’t want to look like you” [178], wrote “Coward” beside his name [72], and still shot the spectres off him [160][179]. In session 24 Father Thomas, who told him again that arcane casters are heretics, wanted to give up on the missing boy, and Kole pressed him: “Do you have so little faith, Father Thomas?” [39][164]. The vote went three to two to stay [180][47][181].
  • Hugo woke to find a stranger in the room and asked “is this guy is this an enemy” [182]. Kole’s verdict on him was “Where have you been keeping this guy? Why wasn’t he here at the start?” and, after Hugo’s second kill, “that’s two for two now” [183][184]. Having only just met him, Kole passed him over for his song [129].

Not yet known

  • His surname, if he has one.
  • His patron, which he has since said he has [39], and whether the patron, “my eldritch god” [100] and the “very powerful individual” who sent him are one and the same [80].
  • Who that sender is, and where Kole met Sevryn.
  • His true face [97][98].
  • His uncommon magic item [1], which he seemed in session 24 to say he did not have [51].
  • The reaction spell he tried against the zombie and again against a spectre [122][124], and the feature the DM called “that Eldritch Mind thing” [127].
  • How his spell slots stand: he spoke of two before the knight, then cast three spells [185][113][115][112].
  • Whether a changeling’s change of shape counts as magic for Aurelian detection: asked, and not ruled [24].
  • His level.
  • Where he was captured, and whether anyone was taken with him [85][86].

Status at the end of session 24

Alive and with the party in the ridge temple, in the fight with the knight of smoke that the DM paused in initiative; the knight has not touched him, and his Eldritch Blast was turned by its shield [186][187]. He is low on hit points, about seven by the spoken figures, with nine temporary hit points from Father Thomas’s Twilight Sanctuary, and his maximum is down by six to a spectre’s touch [135][188][162][189][190]. The DM said in session 23 that a long rest restores what a spectre’s touch takes, and nobody asked again this time [191][192]. How many spell slots he has left is unclear: he spoke of two before the knight came, then cast Suggestion, Phantasmal Force and, apparently, Misty Step [185][113][115][112]. His hands are free and the broken cuffs were last seen on his wrists [140][57]; he still wears the dead cultist’s robes over his own clothes [62][149]. He holds the first of The black orbs and said he would pass the second to Terry [151][152][153]. His lute is broken in half in his bag, by his account, and not mended, and he has a backup instrument [137][138]. He carries The cultist’s dagger, unidentified, apparently the knife he pricked his finger with [144][145][146]; he said he had no magic items, against the uncommon item the DM confirmed in session 23 [1][51]. By his player’s remark in session 23 he holds an inspiration of his own: “I already have inspiration so don’t go to me” [128]. He is still “after the egg” and “a bit miffed” that it is lost [45]. The level up promised to the party for clearing the temple is still pending [101][102].

Player

Played by Jon (handle), who joined the table in session 23 and took the fifth seat after Trey left the campaign (Chris, 2026-10-10). Chris confirmed the spelling Kole on 2026-10-10. The DM allowed the new character one uncommon magic item, as he had Father Thomas [1][193].
