Jack is the spindly human cellmate whom Vasquez met in a Nightwatch cell in Umbrafall in session 8. He warned Vasquez off the Nightwatch, hoped they would be friends and offered the tip that the cell’s rats sometimes taste a bit like chicken [2]. When Vasquez gave the name “Cruz”, the DM first heard “Bruce”, and Terry then coined the prison name “Bruise”; Jack did not name him [3].

Overview

Jack is the cellmate Vasquez woke up beside in the Nightwatch jail in Umbrafall after his arrest in session 7. He appears in a single scene, in which he warns Vasquez off the Nightwatch, hopes they will be friends, and recommends the prison rats [2]. He is remembered because the scene produced Vasquez’s jail nickname, “Bruise”, although the name was Terry’s and not his [3].

Appearance and demeanour

“A rather spindly looking human”, tucked into one of the corners of the cell [4]. He is nervously friendly and keen on company, and dwells on the cell’s rats: “Not a lot to eat in here, no. But sometimes you get one of the juicy ones.” [5].

Relationships

  • Vasquez: his new cellmate. Jack gave his own name, asked Vasquez’s, and was told “Cruz” [6].
  • The Nightwatch: he cautions against crossing them [7]. Later a clerk in the jail office grumbles about a “Jack” who wrote in the log [8][9]; nothing says this is the cellmate.

Friendly. Vasquez, who had just been arrested for helping a woman escape, found him disturbing and oddly specific [10][11][12].

Vasquez woke in a humid, cellar-like cell after a splash of cold water and a guard’s parting “Nighty-night elf” [15]. In a corner sat a spindly human who warned him off the Nightwatch, hoped they would be friends, and asked whether he liked chicken, since the rats sometimes taste like it [2]. He gave his name as Jack and asked Vasquez’s; Vasquez said “Cruz”, which the DM first heard as “Bruce”. Hugo corrected it, and Terry announced that Vasquez now had a prison name, “Bruise” [3]. The cellmate is not seen again, including when Harvo’s bribe got Vasquez out [16].

Status

As of session 23. Alive, presumably still in the Nightwatch jail. He was last seen in session 8, and the party has not been back to the jail since [17].
