The Gummy Mummy, called the Gummy Prince by the Bubblegum Halfling, is the undead occupant of a hard-candy sarcophagus in the treasure room of the Candy Cottage, said to be a selfish prince whom Uncle Nibblecheek once cursed [38]. It woke in session 13 when Caelumn reached for the gold in its tomb [29]. In session 14 it downed Caelumn and Vasquez and cursed both with a daily loss of maximum hit points, until Nibblecheek was talked into lifting the curse; it went back to its sarcophagus when the party fled [32][33][8][23].

Overview

The Gummy Mummy, also called the Gummy Prince, is the undead guardian of the tomb beyond the Candy Cottage’s basement dungeon: a sarcophagus of hard candy among a trove of gold, under the inscription “May death curse all who interrupt my rest.” [4]. The Bubblegum Halfling explains it as a selfish prince that Uncle Nibblecheek once cursed, turning him into a gummy mummy, and a tomb built to honour him [5][6]. It is the cottage’s deadliest guardian, and the party fought it only long enough to flee [7][8].

Appearance and demeanour

“Some sort of undead made out of gummy”, in the DM’s words [9]. It rises from a sarcophagus flanked by two statues of crystalline sugar and coconut, which crack and animate with it [4][10]. Green energy is seen passing from a victim’s body into its fist [11], and it can hold a victim’s eye with a look that fills them with dread [12]. Its only words are challenges to whoever woke it [10][13][14].

Abilities as played

  • A glass cannon. The DM said it “doesn’t have a lot of HP” and is vulnerable to something, which the party never learned [15].
  • A draining fist. Its blow went through Caelumn’s chest on a 24 for 10 bludgeoning and 6 necrotic damage, and through Vasquez’s back on a 22 for 12 and 11 [11][16].
  • The mummy’s curse. A victim cannot regain hit points, regains no maximum on a long rest, and loses 3d6 of maximum hit points every 24 hours until death. Caelumn’s maximum fell by 13 and Vasquez’s by 11 [17][18][3].
  • A frightening gaze. Vasquez failed a Wisdom save and was frightened [19].
  • Reach. It dashed after the party but could not pass through them in the corridor [20].

Relationships

  • Uncle Nibblecheek: the hag who cursed the prince and built the tomb to honour him; told that the Mummy was loose, he said it knew who held the leash, and he was the one who could lift its curse, and did [5][21][6][22][23].
  • The two frosting imps: they joined the fight alongside it [24].
  • The Bubblegum Halfling: named it for Ruin and explained the tomb [25].

Disposition towards the party

Hostile to anyone who disturbs its rest, and it pursued the party only as far as the corridor; it went back to its sarcophagus once they had gone [14][8][26].

History in the campaign

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

At the end of the session the party found the tomb: a hard-candy sarcophagus between two statues, a trove of gold and a warning inscription [4]. Ruin’s Detect Magic showed the gold was real, and, after some argument, Caelumn volunteered to take it [28]. As he reached down the statues cracked and animated, the lid slid aside and a voice asked who had disturbed its slumber [29]. The session ended there.

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

The tomb’s door shut behind Caelumn by itself, and the Mummy came out with two frosting imps [30][31][13][24]. It put its fist through Caelumn and then through the retreating Vasquez, cursing both [32][33]. Hugo flew them out through the basement hatch and the Mummy went back to its sarcophagus [34][35][8]. The Bubblegum Halfling told Ruin what it was [25], and Terry and Ruin, posing as Nibblecheek’s new workers, talked him into lifting the curse [36][23]. The gold in its room was left behind [37].

Status

As of session 23. Alive, as far as the undead are, and back in its sarcophagus at the Candy Cottage [8][26]. Nibblecheek lifted the curse from Caelumn and Vasquez [23], the party left the cottage, and the Mummy has not been met again.
