Gristleback is a destitute goblin thief and beggar who wandered into the party’s camp on Steven’s watch during session 19, begging for food [11]. A self-described ex-death-cult enforcer and trainee Soulknife rogue, he is explicitly a returning character from the DM’s previous campaign — a cross-campaign cameo that the table acknowledged out-of-character [6] and that is not woven into Eldurae’s canon history. In-fiction he is present, fed by Steven (rations + “20 bucks”, [15], and delivers the session’s biggest lore drop — that Seraphine, the ruler of Aurelia, single-handedly destroyed five Archmages in the “Arcanvian War” [8] — while independently corroborating Hett Varn (a red-haired, goggled dwarf) as the Aurelia smuggler-contact [7]. Hugo tried to recruit him for safety-in-numbers [9] but Gristleback waved the party off (“smell you later fools”) and wandered down the road un-recruited at dawn [10]. The DM also voiced him under the near-homophone “Crystalback” [2]. Status: alive, departed.
Overview
Gristleback is a destitute goblin — a thief, beggar, and trainee Soulknife rogue — who wandered into the party’s roadside camp on the outskirts of Aurelia during session 19 and begged for food on Steven’s watch [11]. He arrived in a potato sack, “hungrily devoured” the rations Steven handed over, and stayed long enough to swap hard-luck stories before being allowed to sleep by a nearby tree [12], L531-532). The DM also voiced him under the slightly garbled alias “Crystalback” [2], L519).
His self-described history is bleak: a master “murders my family, puts me in slavery, puts me in charge of his death cult, and then fucks off and just leaves me high and dry” [3]. Out-of-character discussion pegged him as a Soulknife (or “Shadowknife”) rogue and a lapsed follower of a deity the players rendered variously as “Calvamore”, “Calenvol”, and “Kelvermore” [5]. He now scrapes by stealing and “sniffing powder from links and reach” [13].
Cross-campaign cameo — NOT Eldurae canon
Important: Gristleback is not a native of Eldurae. He is a returning character from the DM’s previous campaign, brought in as a one-scene cameo. The table acknowledged this out-of-character: Terry noted “I’m sure Ash and Brian understand now that this is a former character from last campaign” [6].
For that reason, his backstory — the murdered family, the master, the death cult, the goblin order that “fell apart”, his lapsed deity (“Calvamore”/“Calenvol”/“Kelvermore”), and the smuggling spot “Linkson Bridge” he recommends [4] — belongs to the prior campaign’s world, not this one, and should not be canonised as Eldurae lore. His deity in particular is left deliberately un-canonised (the spelling is itself unstable across three player renderings). What is canon is simply that a goblin physically appeared in camp in s19, was fed, talked, and left.
What he contributed in-fiction (canon)
Despite being a cameo, two of his lines are load-bearing because they were stated by the DM in-character and corroborate existing campaign threads:
- The Seraphine reveal. Asked whether the party knew of Seraphine, Gristleback delivered the session’s biggest piece of new lore: “She flew through the sky in the Arcanvian War and fucking destroyed five Archmages by herself. […] Oh yeah, she’s the leader of Aurelia” [8]. This is the party’s first confirmation that Aurelia is ruled by Seraphine and that she is a god-tier individual combatant. (The lore is treated as canon because the DM stated it; see Seraphine.)
- Corroborating Hett Varn. When the party fished for a way into Aurelia, Gristleback offered his “contact” — a dwarf with goggles and red hair — whom the party immediately recognised as Hett Varn, the smuggler they had already been pointed toward [7]. This independently corroborates Hett Varn as the Aurelia smuggling contact.
Recruitment attempt and departure
Hugo — who had overheard the whole conversation on passive perception — made a pitch for Gristleback to travel with the group: “Would you be willing to just, you know, stay with the group? […] safety in numbers” [9]. The party debated him with characteristic darkness (Terry twice floated smothering him in his sleep, but took no action, [14]. In the end Gristleback declined and wandered off down the road at dawn — “anyways smell you later fools” — un-recruited [10]. He checked his own pockets on the way out; the party had not robbed him.
Status
Alive, departed. Present in camp for one night-watch scene in s19; left of his own accord and is not currently travelling with the party.
