The Gingerbread Steves are the wiki’s name for the “four gingerbread people, each about six feet tall, armed with a rolling pin” who guarded the candy-cane cages in the basement of Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage in session 13 [1]. They attacked when Terry came down the ladder, and the party killed all four; as they fell, the survivors cried out for “Steve”, which gave them their name here [29][30][8][9]. With them dead, Hugo broke open the cage of the bubblegum boy, Asger [33]. In session 14 Nibblecheek took the gingerbread Terry for one of his own creations [21].
Overview
The Gingerbread Steves are four gingerbread guards in the dungeon beneath the Candy Cottage, standing between the candy-cane cages that hold a boy of pink bubblegum and a huge skeleton gripping an axe [6][1]. They have no names of their own; the wiki’s name for them comes from the cries of “Steve” as each one fell [7][8][9]. They are Uncle Nibblecheek’s work, and the last obstacle to freeing Asger.
Appearance and demeanour
Gingerbread people about six feet tall, each armed with a rolling pin [1]. They fight as a pack and shout to each other; the one who seems to lead calls “get it boys” [10]. A limb cut from one turns into inanimate gingerbread, and the dead crumble into piles of it [11][12][9][13]. The last of them begged for its life and then offered to say where treasure was hidden [14][13].
Abilities as played
They hit with rolling pins, the first with advantage “since it’s near an ally” [15]. A natural 20 hit Terry for 10 bludgeoning damage and sent him into his shell [16][17]. Three of them went for Vasquez together and took him to four hit points [18]. They burn: Ruin’s fire did 21 to one [19]. Hugo’s reckless natural 20 for 18 chopped one in half [20].
Relationships
- Uncle Nibblecheek: their maker, who tells the gingerbread Terry “it’s all magic just like I created you” [21].
- Asger: the caged boy they guarded; he had been set to work in the kitchen and then locked up [22].
- Bubba Walker: the cottage’s other guard, at the kitchen door upstairs [23][24].
- The party: Terry, himself gingerbread after the rolling-pin trap, tried “I’m just a turtle” and “I’m also made of gingerbread.” on them to no effect [25].
Disposition towards the party
Hostile guards. They turned on Terry the moment he came down the ladder and fought until they were destroyed [26][13].

History in the campaign
Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus
Main article: Session 13
Under a rug in the cottage’s living room lay a hidden hatch, and below it a sugar-glazed dungeon [27][6]. Terry went down first, into the middle of four gingerbread guards, who turned on him [1][28]. The party followed one by one. Hugo’s natural 20 chopped one in half, Ruin’s blow brought down the next, and Hugo’s opportunity attack cut down a third, already burned by Ruin, as it ran at the party shouting “Get him, Steve!” [29][30][31]. The last begged for its life, offered to tell where the treasure was, and was run through the back [32]. Hugo then broke open the cage of the bubblegum boy [33].
Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe
Main article: Session 14
Terry, still gingerbread, passed himself off to Nibblecheek as one of the “new recruits fresh out of the oven” [34]. Later he and Ruin posed as new apprentices, and the hag, taking Terry for one of his own creations, said that “it’s all magic just like I created you” and asked why Terry was not guarding the child [35]. Nibblecheek’s surrender later undid the party’s transformations [36].
Status
As of session 23. All four destroyed in session 13 [29][12][9][13]. No gingerbread guards were seen again.
