Fergus is the butcher and innkeeper of Fergus’s Grill in Wyrmbough Grove, a grill with a bed and breakfast and small cottages at five gold a night [15][30]. The DM voices him as a very camp Zeus with Russell Crowe’s Greek accent, and he calls everyone “baby” and presses his meat on all comers [9][8]. In session 3 he cooked the wyrmling Sunset is Nigh for the town, kept eight portions for the road and cleaned the skull for Hugo [2], and in session 4 the DM ruled that each portion gave five temporary hit points [3][41].

Overview

Fergus runs Fergus’s Grill in Wyrmbough Grove: butcher, cook, innkeeper and cottage-renter in one. He is the party’s base in the grove in sessions 2 to 4, where nearly the whole village is feasting on his meat [5], and the table keeps up a running joke about “Fergus’s meat” [6][7]. After Sunset is Nigh was killed in session 3 he cooked the dragon for the party’s dinner, and the DM gave each of them five temporary hit points for it [2][3].

Appearance and demeanour

Hospitable to the point of aggression. The DM voices him as a very camp Zeus with Russell Crowe’s Greek accent [8]. He calls the party “baby”, flirts with them (“blondie”, “tall and handsome”) and cooks them to his own taste, not theirs [9][10][11][12]. He slaughtered that morning’s cow himself [13]. On the party’s last morning he is cleaning the grill for the day’s customers, “almost like he lives and breathes for that grill” [14].

Relationships

  • Fergus’s Grill: the small eating establishment he owns, which also runs a bed and breakfast [15][16].
  • Hugo: a regular who asks for “the usual, just the steak”, is given the dragon skull and has his dragon meat reheated [17][18][19].
  • Gwen Homora: arranges to meet the party at his grill at supper, and brings the potions there [20][21].
  • Cholmondeley: remembers the “extra vitality” his meat gave him in the unrecorded first session [22].
  • The party: repeat customers, and the butt of his flirting.

Disposition towards the party

Warmly, flirtatiously friendly. He bends his rules for them: he reheats Hugo’s dragon steak on the party’s last morning “only because I like you” when he is sold out [23].

History in the campaign

Session 2: The Bark, the Dryad, and the Riddle that Wasn’t a Tree

The party had already eaten at the grill in the unrecorded first session, and the opening recap remembered Fergus forcing his meat on everyone [27][28]. After the grove, Gwen Homora told them to collect her potions at supper at his place [20]. Fergus greeted them with “Well, hello, baby. you came back for seconds?” [9], served ribs and steaks to order, and cooked Vasquez’s steak medium although he asked for rare [29]. He rented the party a small cottage for five gold, its door opening to the word “friend” [30][31]. Gwen brought five vials of poison resistance to his tables [32].

Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley

Hugo asked for the dragon to be cooked at Fergus’s for the party’s dinner [33]. Fergus agreed to cook Sunset is Nigh “like nobody’s business” for the town, grumbled that eight portions saved for the next day would go chewy, and, asked for a victory skull, took the meat off the bone and left the skull intact: “It’s a bit dark, but sure.” [34]. Each of the party got a dragon steak, and Hugo’s came with a clean skull with intact teeth [35].

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

The DM ruled that the dragon meat Fergus had cooked gave each of the party five temporary hit points [3]. The party slept in the hut they had from Fergus, and in the morning Hugo went to the grill for the usual steak. Fergus was sold out, offered nuts and berries, then took Hugo’s saved dragon meat and reheated it on the grill: “Well, here you go, savior of Wyrmbough.” [36][37]. He saw Hugo off with a line about a small grey area between what he would and would not do, and Hugo took five more temporary hit points [38].

Status

As of session 23. Alive, presumably still at his grill in Wyrmbough Grove. He has not appeared since the party left in session 4; later he turns up only in jokes, such as Terry’s answer before session 5 that he was known for “serving exceptionally tasty ribs and meat” [39] and “Thinking about Fergus’s meat” in session 8 [40].
