Fen is the nervous Greysmere local who, when undead took the innkeeper’s son Pell, cut the hand off one of the takers: the severed hand the party found axe-pinned to a chopping block by the graveyard [8][9][10]. The only witness to the kidnapping, he told Father Thomas and Terry that the kidnappers were three people in charcoal robes accompanied by undead, one of whom said “Mother wants him alive.” as they dragged Pell “up north to the woods” [11][12]. He looked ashamed for reasons nobody learned, would not be persuaded to guide the party, and walked off into the village, where the innkeeper said he might be found at his mother’s [15][21][26][17].

Overview

Fen is a local of Greysmere, first seen as one of “two locals that sit near the hearth” of the inn, the one who “keeps turning a muddy cap in his hands” [1]. When undead took the innkeeper’s son Pell, Fen cut the hand off one of the takers; it was still pinned to a chopping block by the graveyard, fingers scraping at the wood, when the party arrived [8][9][10]. He is the only witness to the kidnapping, and the source of the words “Mother wants him alive.” [11][12].

Appearance and demeanour

Nervous and mud-capped. He turns his muddy cap in his hands, looks “a bit nervously out the door”, startles when Father Thomas sits down and shows a flash of shame under Terry’s Insight [1][13][14][15]. The innkeeper calls him “Poor lad” [12]. His race is not stated.

Relationships

  • Pell: the innkeeper’s son, whose abduction he saw [9].
  • Orrin Sol: the innkeeper, who points the party to him and later confirms he was the only witness [16][12].
  • His mother: unnamed. The innkeeper says he might be found at her house, down the street four houses, then right for five more, on the left [17].
  • Father Thomas and Terry: his interrogators, who scare him into talking and then fail to recruit him [18][19].
  • The charcoal-robed kidnappers: the three robed people he saw, one of whom said “Mother wants him alive.” [11].

Disposition towards the party

Frightened and evasive. He says he knows nothing until startled into talking, and walks away when pressed to come along [20][11][21][22].

Notable quotes

“It was three people, right? They’re all in charcoal robes. They were accompanied by several undead.” — Fen (Nick, DM), [11]

“I chopped it off but the body kind of just continued to move it didn’t look alive” — Fen (Nick, DM), [10]

“Paint, rugs, food, tools. One of them stole my kid’s dragon chess game.” — Fen (Nick, DM), [23]

History in the campaign

Session 21: The Hand That Points North

Main article: Session 21

The innkeeper pointed the party to Fen, who had cut off the hand when he saw undead take Pell [9][16]. When Father Thomas sat beside him with glowing eyes and conjured a noise at the door, he blurted out his account: three people in charcoal robes with undead, one saying “Mother wants him alive.”, dragging Pell up north to the woods [24]. He had chopped the hand off a body that “didn’t look alive” and led Thomas out to see it [25], and he named what had been stolen: paint, rugs, food, tools and his kid’s dragon chess game [23]. Terry saw shame on his face [15]. Thomas’s Persuasion to make him a guide failed and Fen walked off into the village [19][26]. Neither interrogator could remember which way he had said the kidnappers went [27].

Status

As of session 23. Alive, in Greysmere, and probably at his mother’s house [17]; the party has not seen him again. Why he looked ashamed was not learned. The storehouse inventory also lists a dragon chess set [28], and whether it was his child’s is not established.
