Earthwing the Owlin was a one-session cameo character introduced at the end of session 3 [1] as Cholmondeley’s intended replacement at the table, sent by Sevryn. An Owlin in a rice / Vietnamese conical hat, edgy in temperament, anti-snake by avowed disposition (“snake eater”), Earthwing arrived at the funeral feast in Wyrmbough Grove and was never actually played in combat or in any subsequent session. By session 4 Chris had retired the cameo and replaced him with Terry the tortle. The name was reused in-fiction for Terry’s owl familiar, summoned via Find Familiar at the Black Vein Quarry in session 8, and is now the canonical name for the owl rather than the Owlin.

Appearance and personality

Owlin. Wears a rice / Vietnamese conical hat. Edgy. Self-described “snake eater” / anti-snake.

There is no further documented voice or characterisation; he was never run through a session of play. The flavour notes are all from his single-scene introduction at the Cholmondeley funeral feast.

Background

Sent by Sevryn as the latest in the campaign’s pattern of Sevryn-recruited replacement PCs. The pattern — Sevryn pulls in a stranger to fill a vacated seat, the stranger walks into the campsite at the right moment — would later repeat with Terry (s4) and Ruin (s10). This is the pattern’s first instance.

Campaign role

Earthwing arrived at the funeral feast at the end of session 3 [1]. He never participated in combat. He never travelled with the party beyond the funeral scene. By session 4 he had been replaced at the table by Terry the tortle, and Earthwing the Owlin was retired entirely — to the point that the name was free for re-use.

In session 8, Terry ritualised Find Familiar for the first time and summoned an owl. He named the owl Earthwing, deliberately recycling the cameo character’s name. The owl-Earthwing has since become the canonical referent for the name in campaign discourse; the Owlin is referenced only when distinguishing the two.
