Caelumn is a draconic sorcerer played by Toby since session 2: a devotee of the Platinum Dragon from Vhal’Zarim, the Bahamut cathedral city in the far south, whose fire-only magic sits awkwardly with the metallic faith he was raised in [400][135]. Taken in young by the Platinum Order for his draconic blood and trained in its clergy, he was never found worthy by most of it: “I may not have been found worthy by the majority of the people within the Platinum Order, but my mentor always had faith in me” [6][22]. He kept The Egg for the party until an Aurelian chain pulled his backpack away in session 15 [189], carries the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring from Maelis Dirn’s remains [167], and has given the table its most memorable fire, from the spore chamber he blew up around himself in session 5 to the Chromatic Orb that killed Kole’s captor in session 23 [260][436].

Appearance and personality

Caelumn carries himself in a pompous, religious-draconic cadence, the persistent voice of a true believer. His combat patter is drawn from a single class fantasy: “I shall fire a Fire Bolt.” [125], “I’m going to cast mage armor preemptively” [126], “I am a Draconic Sorcerer.” [4]. The fire-only spell list reads as both deliberate flavour choice and tonal commitment.

He is also the table’s most reliable comic instrument. His self-deprecation about his own bad rolls is practically scriptural, and his asides are among the table’s most quoted: “hello sorry i was muted um so i’m eating a burger” [127], “I want to have a look around the room, but it’s fucking pointless because I’m exhausted because Nick’s a dick” [128], and, after the spore-chamber detonation, “well i didn’t think it was gonna fucking explode the whole room” [129]. When his Chromatic Orb hit the first Aurelian of session 15 he took on the descriptor “heretic”, “now I’m the heretic great heretic” [130][131], and he leaned into it in s16: “I’m just a believer in the holy word” [132].

His draconic scales show when he wants them to: he bared the glowing scales under his throat to Phil Flowerforge in session 12 [133]. By his own description a platinum fire glows between them when he casts [134][41], and the DM has painted his fire platinum too [55].

Background

From Vhal’Zarim, the Bastion of the Platinum Flame: Bahamut’s cathedral-fortress city, which “is at the very south” of the continent in Caelumn’s own words [135]. The Platinum Order took him in when he was young, because of a vision of his ancient draconic blood, but he never reached the power or the expectations it held for him; his mentor, who kept faith in him, is “the reason why I’ve been allowed out” [136][137]. In his own summary: “I may not have been found worthy by the majority of the people within the Platinum Order, but my mentor always had faith in me” [137]. His clerical training is canonical: “I have cleric training due to my time in the clergy” [22].

The Vhal’Zarim origin myth [135]

The city’s foundational story, as he told it by the beach fire in session 18, is a chromatic-dragon attack in the far past: “long ago our city was attacked by the chromatic dragons and the great one, the platinum dragon came down and saved us, and he may not be something that you would revere, but when the gods abandoned us, Bahamut was the one, the only one who came to our aid, and now we live in eternal gratitude towards him” [135]. Per Nick’s ruling in the same scene [25], Bahamut is “very much a god” in this setting, not just a city myth. Caelumn’s own framing of the city’s religious tone is Warhammer 40k Emperor-worship, “a super religious zealotry” [135][24]; this is PC characterisation, not literal in-fiction canon.

A city mirrored in Aurelia [37]

The DM has characterised Vhal’Zarim as a strongly religious city “much kind of mirrored in a way to Aurelia,” which is why Caelumn knows that “the deity of Aurelia is Aurelia.” [37]; the point was made to explain why a cleric of Aurelia who follows the Everlight instead strikes locals as odd. Caelumn owned the mirror, conceding his home “isn’t a very accepting city in regards to other faiths” but that travelling far “rather than just the walls of Vhal’Zarim” had left him open-minded, so “who am i to say it’s odd” that Father Thomas worships a different god when “i worship a giant platinum dragon in the sky” [138][139][140].

The Platinum Order’s policy [26]

In Caelumn’s words: “We of the Platinum Order don’t judge other people… The Platinum Order is accepting of all religions, as long as they’re not within our city walls” [26]. Mike’s gloss back: “all religions as long as you get the fuck out of our city” [141]. Caelumn did not contest the gloss.

Afterlife eschatology [27]

Terry asked if Bahamut had promised a promised land. Caelumn: “No, I am just awaiting seeing the eternal flame. And when I die, I shall be burnt forever” [27]. The eternal flame is the canonical Vhal’Zarim afterlife.

Doctrinal contradiction (still unresolved)

Two narrative threads still sit awkwardly together: the Bahamut-aligned Platinum Order is doctrinally metallic-dragon (and the in-fiction distinction between “metallic dragons are kind of considered holy” and “chromatic dragons are seen as a sort of perversion of draconic energy” was confirmed by Nick at [142]), and Caelumn’s chromatic / fire-only spell list is the precise tonal opposite. The campaign bible flags it as an unresolved character thread.

Relationship to Aurelia’s Pure Light (separate religious system)

Per the post-s17 DM corrections register, Vhal’Zarim’s Bahamut faith and Aurelia’s Pure Light are separate religious systems. Future use of Caelumn’s Bahamut faith should not conflate the two. The practical question, whether he could declare himself a Bahamut cleric inside Aurelia, was left open when the party turned back from Aurelia in s19. He kept his faith to himself when Father Thomas joined [143][144], but has spoken of it openly before him since [138][145].

Build history

  • s2-current: Sorcerer, Draconic Bloodline subclass, fire-themed. Caelumn carries a draconic bloodline tied to Bahamut’s flame; exact dragon type unresolved (per the DM’s post-s17 ruling, which does not confirm red). Spell list is flavour-locked to fire and radiant-adjacent damage; the player’s stated intent is “he just wants to be a fire dragon” (per Chris’s confirmation).
  • Level 4 at end of s14 [146]. No later level up is on record; the DM has promised one once the party is done with the ridge temple [147], and it was still pending in session 23 [148].
  • Hit dice: d6s [149], with a Constitution modifier of two, which the table agreed in session 23 is added for each die spent [150][151][90].
  • Free casts: a first-level Cure Wounds once a day [152], a Misty Step [153], and Dissonant Whispers, which comes from a feat. As Dissonant Whispers is not a sorcerer spell, the table agreed that neither Innate Sorcery nor his Bloodwell Vial raises its save DC, 14 against the 15 of his sorcerer spells [154][155][156][157].

Equipment

  • Dragonslayer Longsword: a longsword of dragon slaying from the hoard at Sunset is Nigh’s lair, which he took and attuned to in session 3 [158][159][160]. Whose it is now is disputed: from session 6 Hugo and the DM speak of it as Hugo’s, with no hand-over shown [161][162], and which of them holds it is a question for the DM.
  • Soulbinder’s Packed Ring: Maelis Dirn’s own ring, with “her own personal twist” [163]. Terry found it on her remains after the Titan killed her, and once Harvo had identified it Terry passed it to Caelumn [164][165][166][167]. It stores the soul of something the party has killed [168]. An attempt in s9 failed, the soul dissipating [169][170]; in s11 it took the soul of an owlbear [171], which he spent in s13 to summon the owlbear against Bubba Walker, who tore the soul to shreds [172][173]. No soul is on record in the ring since, and nothing on record puts Maelis’s soul in it. In session 24 he read the ring’s text, which by his account says that a soul spent from it is lost for good, and asked the DM to retcon that “so I can use it”; no ruling can be made out, and the ring went unused [112]. Later he said he would take it off as an offering for the Dracolich statue, then asked Hugo to offer one of his axes instead [174][175].
  • Bloodwell Vial: his pick of the DM’s out-of-game gift of one uncommon item to each player, in session 11 [176][177][178][179]; restores sorcery points on a charge. He still had it after the backpack was lost [32][63]. At the end of session 22 he read out a hit-dice property, to “regain 5 sorcery points”, which the item’s page does not list; no ruling was given [180][181].
  • Black experimental potion (s11, from Alston of the Whisper Coil Emporium, who wants it tested): he added it to his backpack [182][183], which was stolen in s15, yet in s19 he still had “this random black potion in my pocket, but I don’t know what it does”, and did not drink it [184]. In session 24 he asked the DM what it was. “You never tested it.” was the answer: it was the price of discounted healing potions, to be tried out “on yourselves or someone else”, and his History check to remember more got “You don’t remember” [185][186][187]. He left it undrunk [188].
  • Backpack (lost s15): pulled into the smoke by an Aurelian chain with The Egg inside, along with, in his words, “lots of other stuff”, at least one healing potion among it [189][190][191][192]. The crooked broom was last seen with Terry, not in the pack [193]. Per the DM, the candied dentures had already been returned to Uncle Nibblecheek before the s15 backpack snare and were not in the pack at the time of the theft. The DM reaffirmed this in session 21, when Caelumn found the apple still listed on his character sheet: he had returned it but “forgot to remove it properly” [194][195]. In s19 he replaced the pack with an empty, mouldy one from the sewers [196][197].
  • Added in session 21: The eye-and-mouth token, a stone token pocketed from three robed skeletons in the ridge temple [59][198]; The skeleton’s whip, taken from an eye-patched skeleton and kept in his backpack; the DM called it cursed at the table, but has since said no curse is confirmed ([199][62]; the DM’s post-s21 clarifications, 2026-09-27); Orrin Sol’s list of the goods stolen from the Greysmere storehouse [200][201]; and a spear, which he carries in his backpack and used to probe the temple floor for traps [202].
  • Added in session 22: about 150 gold coins from the hole under the mummy-lord statue, which he calls “cursed coins”, though no curse is stated [203][204][205], and two goodberries from Father Thomas [206]. He held The Book of Secrets only briefly before losing it to Terry [207][208].
  • Added in session 23: a Cap of Water Breathing, awarded by the DM to his player, out of character, for giving the table recap: “Toby, for that brilliant recap, I’m going to give you a magic item.”; “Like a hat. C-A-P” [86][209][87]. Its properties were not described, and no find is narrated in the fiction. By the same player’s out-of-character account, the coins of session 22 are all in Caelumn’s own bag, “It is not in the party inventory. It is in my inventory.”, with a promise: “I will share it later” [210][211][212].
  • Added in session 24: The pink unicorn plush, a plushie whose back opens on “a ginormous, endless void”, and the gold coins under it, from the hollow beneath the knight statue [213][214][215][216]; the curved knife of the root room, The root room’s curved knife, which he took up and cut at the vines with, and which is probably still his [217][218][219]; and a look at The root room’s wooden staff, which Terry let him take [220][221]. He set two of the party’s moonstones in the Dracolich statue’s eyes, and nothing happened; they are not shown recovered [222][223]. He fed Father Thomas a Potion of Healing from the party inventory, which the DM retired after the session [224][225].

Campaign role

Caelumn has been at the table since session 2, one of the original party that met at the Hollow Hall Tavern and took up Sevryn’s egg quest, and with Hugo one of its last two members still in the party. His story runs in five arcs.

The egg quest begins (sessions 2 and 3). His vision on Edvan’s burial mound in Wyrmbough Grove led the party to Sunset is Nigh’s lair, where The Egg took in its first hoard and he claimed the Dragonslayer Longsword.

Umbrafall and the quarry (sessions 4 to 10). The Black Mask took an interest in the egg he carried. He came out of the Maelis Dirn contract with her Soulbinder’s Packed Ring, confessed his failure in the eyes of the Platinum Order at the Black Vein Quarry and lit Harvo’s pyre, and broke the orderly at the Dawn Mercy Clinic, opening the party’s thread of Aurelian abductions with Mira Hale.

Eldwythe (sessions 11 to 16). On the road and in the Candy Cottage he bound and then lost an owlbear’s soul, was cursed by the Gummy Mummy and charmed by Uncle Nibblecheek, and saw Briochebane prove the wrong dragon. When the Aurelians came for the party he lost the Egg, pulled away in his backpack, and fled through the Eldwythe sewers.

To Aurelia and back (sessions 17 to 20). He revived Mike at sea, told the party of Vhal’Zarim and his faith by the beach fire, and failed to save Mike from an Aurelian patrol. He then argued the party out of Aurelia and talked it over the border with Laura Bennett’s caravan, with Father Thomas newly in tow.

The ridge temple (sessions 21 to 24). Hired at Greysmere to find Pell, he voted the party into a temple of Vecna, fed a secret to its mural, took the silver wyrmling Rime for his Platinum Dragon, and killed the cultist holding Kole captive. In session 24, asked whether he abandoned Bahamut for Vecna, he answered that he was “starting to see Vecna’s ways” [226][227]. At the end of session 24 he is mid-fight in the temple, still at level 4.

Session by session

Session 2: The Bark, the Dryad, and the Riddle that Wasn’t a Tree

Main article: Session 2

Caelumn’s first recorded session. Meeting Harvo at the treeline, he was the first of the party to give his name in character, and he placed The Egg in the humming carrier Harvo gave them for it [228][229][1]. Cutting into the first corrupted redwood woke three zombies [230]. At the Dryad’s riddle he suspected the answer was bark, but the party answered tree and was wrong [231][232]. In the fight that followed a vine round his throat put him on death saves until Cholmondeley got him up and he cured himself [233][234][235]. A critical Fire Bolt finished a mud mosquito, and the party reached level 2 [236][237].

Session 3: The Lair of Sunset is Nigh and the Death of Cholmondeley

In the circle on Edvan’s burial mound Caelumn fell into a magical slumber and dreamt the elves’ last battle with Death-at-Sunset and the cave where her corpse lay, which showed the party the way to the lair [238]. Crossing the stream he burned the leeches off Cholmondeley, and half his moustache with them [239][240], and his Persuasion talked Armin Whisperwind into standing aside at the cave mouth [241][242][243]. Inside, his natural-20 Fire Bolt struck the dragon’s skull and showed that the voice within belonged to a tiny wyrmling, Sunset is Nigh [244][245]. After the fight, in which Cholmondeley died, he attuned the longsword of dragon slaying from the hoard, his Dragonslayer Longsword [246][159][160].

Session 4: The Still Current, the Black Mask, and Hugo’s Pact

Main article: Session 4

On the road south a sabretooth tiger clawed Caelumn down to five hit points; his upcast Chromatic Orb struck both tigers at once, and he healed Vasquez [247][248][249][250]. At The Still Current Inn a dwarf offering wagers snapped Caelumn, Hugo and Terry into a black void and showed himself a devil, The Black Mask; it was the world dragon egg Caelumn carried that interested him [251][252][253]. Caelumn would not take the deal “right now” [254], though in his room he owned to himself that he was tempted by the ring on offer, and a crow pecked at his window, looked at him and flew off [255][256]. In Umbrafall he accepted The Broker’s contract on Maelis Dirn for the party [257].

Session 5: Black Hollow Market Tunnels and the Hollow Guardians

In the fungus-choked Warrens under the Black Hollow Market, Caelumn met a cloud of spores with Produce Flame, and the whole chamber exploded: he took 28 fire damage and went down engulfed in flame, and Terry healed him back up [258][259][260][261]. The blast burned the fungus off a wall and bared the runes that led to a hidden lair [262][263]. Against the regenerating fungal giant, his upcast Witch Bolt set off the alchemist’s fire Vasquez had pushed into its chest [264][265]. He answered the Hollow Guardians’ challenge with “we are servants of the hollow” [266][267][268][269], failed the Deception even with his inspiration, and started the fight. Afterwards he read a looted scroll as Wither and Bloom [270][271].

Session 6: Maze of the Minotaur and the Titan

Main article: Session 6

A phase spider that dropped from the ceiling of a Warrens storeroom left Caelumn down, poisoned and paralysed for an hour, so the party long-rested in the dungeon, where a natural 1 against the creeping fungus cost him a level of exhaustion [272][273][274][275]. Next morning he went in to the bookshelf that had spoken to Terry, failed his Wisdom save and knelt praying to it as its follower until Hugo dragged him out by the leg; even then he asked the others whether forbidden knowledge did not tempt them [276][277][278][279]. He prised open a trapped sarcophagus in the maze’s central chamber [280][281]. In the Titan fight a natural-20 boulder for 42, four short of killing him outright, was undone by Terry’s Silvery Barbs and his own Shield [282][283][284][285].

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

Main article: Session 7

Caelumn gave the table recap and lived through the end of the Titan fight on Shield and his last healing potion: “I should be very dead right now. Very, very dead.” [286][287]. On Maelis Dirn’s remains Terry found a cracked, magical ring, which The Broker named a soulbinder ring and which could hold the soul of something the party had killed; Terry passed it to Caelumn as the one with spell-slot progression, and it became his Soulbinder’s Packed Ring [164][163][168][166][167]. Leaving the Whisper Coil Emporium, he stepped in front of two Nightwatch guards taking an urn from a grieving woman and told them that the dead are sacred [288][289]. In the street fight that followed he healed the downed Vasquez for 14 and then ran, and Vasquez was taken [290][291].

Session 8: Bruise the Cellmate, the Succubus, and the Quarry Ghosts

Caelumn put up 130 gold of his own towards Vasquez’s release, handing it to Harvo for the bribe at the jail [292][293]. On the road north he found the tracks of something big and canine round the camp clearing and pressed for a night watch [294][295]. When the old woman at their fire proved to be a succubus, his Magic Missile broke her hold on Vasquez and his twinned Chromatic Orb her hold on Terry [296][297][298][299]; a poisoned bolt and the rest of the fight left him out of spell slots and down, and Harvo’s healing got him up on three hit points [300][301][302][303]. At the Black Vein Quarry a ghost miner ran its hand through his chest, draining nine points from his hit point maximum [304][305].

Session 9: The Death of Harvo

Main article: Session 9

At the Black Vein Quarry Caelumn’s Religion check named a dead priest’s holy symbol as Ilmater’s, and his first attempt to bind a soul in his ring, a wight’s with a second-level slot at a 25% chance, failed as the soul dissipated [306][307][308][170]. Made by the succubus to relive his greatest failure, he told how the Platinum Order had taken him in young for his ancient draconic blood and how he never lived up to it, keeping only his mentor’s faith; the words rang hollow and he failed the save [136][137][309]. His quickened Magic Missile broke her hold on Hugo, but she took Hugo again, and Hugo killed Harvo [310][311][312][313]. Caelumn lit Harvo’s pyre and spoke the rites, commending him to Bahamut’s halls [314][315].

Session 10: Ruin Joins, the Aurelian Conspiracy, the Plate Armour

Main article: Session 10

At the Dawn Mercy Clinic Caelumn leaned over the counter playing a flame round his fingers, and his Intimidation came up three natural 20s in a row. The orderly broke: Aurelians had come with papers and a name, Mira Hale, taken for her magic [316][317][318][319][320], which opened the party’s thread of Aurelian abductions. On the street back an ambusher’s daggers met his Shield, and he resisted the man’s invitation to come and join the winning side [321][322]. In the fight with the Aurelian Paladin he described the platinum fire that glows between his scales when he casts, and an upcast Chromatic Orb hit the Paladin and bounced on to two of his men [134][323][324][325]. Afterwards he spent his free Cure Wounds on the fallen Vasquez [326][152].

Session 11: Owlbears and the Soulbinder

Main article: Session 11

Caelumn chose the Bloodwell Vial as his share of the DM’s out-of-game gift of an uncommon item to each player [176][177], and at the Whisper Coil Emporium took a black experimental potion from Alston to test [182][183][178][179]. On the road east he diagnosed a family’s cracked cart axle and helped to mend it [327][328]. On his night watch he strayed into the woods after firewood and was caught by three owlbears; they brought him down, and Hugo flew in on his Winged Boots, snatched up his body and carried him clear until Ruin healed him [329][330][331][332][333]. When the fight was won he channelled the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring with a second-level slot, at a 25% chance, and took the soul of one of the owlbears, the first soul on record in the ring [334][335][8].

Session 12: Eldwythe and the Candy Cottage

On the road to Eldwythe Caelumn paid five copper to settle Ruin’s theft of apples from an orchard, and a silver coin for a sack of them [336][337][338]. In the town he ran at the burning sweet shop, tried Control Flames, opened the burning door and breathed cold through it, holding back the fire until Hugo carried Edith Applegarth out [339][340][341][342]. At the bakery he stretched his neck to show the glowing dragon scales under his throat and told Phil Flowerforge that he did not look sure of his denial [133]; Phil confessed to the stolen dragon egg he had hatched and raised as Briochebane [343]. In the Candy Cottage Caelumn accepted a cup of tea out of politeness and opened on the candy goblins with Burning Hands [344][345].

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

Main article: Session 13

Caelumn spent the owlbear soul in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring, summoning the owlbear to walk the trapped hallway and then to attack Bubba Walker, although the DM pointed out that a peaceful way past existed [346][172][347][348]. Bubba tore the owlbear’s soul to shreds and it vanished; no soul is on record in the ring since [349][350]. Exploring the rock-candy library alone, he read a children’s storybook in which a young Edith Applegarth betrayed her brother in a bargain with the hag [351]. He took an ordinary broom and a candied apple with dentures in it, noted as “definitely cursed. Do not remove dentures” [352][353]. In the treasure room, with the others too wary, he reached for a coin, and the sarcophagus began to open [354][355].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

Main article: Session 14

The door had shut behind Caelumn, leaving him alone with the risen Gummy Mummy. Its first blow dropped him and laid the mummy’s curse on him: no regaining hit points, his maximum cut by 13, and by 3d6 more every day until death [356][357][358]. Hugo flew him out. The party’s bluff brought Uncle Nibblecheek to lift the curse, but the hag’s charm took Caelumn at once and made him a mindless servant, set to tidying the cottage and then, at the hag’s command, leaping at Briochebane, only to fall flat on his face [359][360][361][362][363]. The Egg, which he had been carrying, did not react to Brioche, and the DM suggested that Sevryn’s magic had misfired and sent them after a golden dragon [364][10][365]. The party reached level 4 [146].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

Main article: Session 15

When an Aurelian patrol came for Althea and beheaded Ruin with a chain, Caelumn’s Chromatic Orb set the first recruit’s hair alight, and he promptly styled himself a heretic [366][130][131]. In the smoke of Phil Flowerforge’s bomb, Mharos looked over at Caelumn, “Remember. You did this.”, and forced a save on Vasquez, who passed it [367][368]. Then a chain tugged at Caelumn, and his backpack, with The Egg inside, was pulled away into the cloud [189][369]: the quest’s object was in Aurelian hands. In the Eldwythe sewers, Vasquez’s lightning through the water dropped him, until Althea’s healing woke him to glare daggers down the channel [370][371][372].

Session 16: Through the Sewers, Onto the Skiff

Main article: Session 16

In the Eldwythe sewers Caelumn emptied Phil’s wet crate, and tipping it out into the water showed up a hidden top hat, the Hat of Disguise; he tried to slam it on Vasquez’s head unannounced, and Vasquez pushed his hand aside [373][374][375][376]. A natural 1 let a fungus burst in his face in the flooded room [377][378]. He found the way past the inscribed wall by walking backwards through it, then opened the chest in the sarcophagus chamber, valued its diamond at 300 gold, and set off the trap [379][380][381]. Taking a flameskull’s opportunity attack to line up a spell, he was burned through for 18 and dropped, and a ghoul’s bite cost him two death saves before Hugo’s potion brought him back [382][383][384][385][386].

Session 17: New Hands, the Black Mask’s Renegotiation, and the Rimeclaw

Main article: Session 17

Caelumn’s player joined partway through, to a retcon of how session 16 had ended: Vasquez and Althea had split off and been captured by the Aurelians, and the others had chosen to leave them [387][388]. On the skiff south he watched the newcomer Mike ritual-cast Detect Magic on Pim’s pebble “with very confused eyes” [389][390], and his Perception made out land to the west and an Aurelian tower to the south [14]. When the frozen reef line erupted, he had the session’s headline turn: a second-level thunder Chromatic Orb whose bounce came up a natural 20 and blew a 52-damage hole through a water wolf [391][392][393][394].

Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road

When the giant winged catfish’s acid dropped Mike as the boat dissolved, Caelumn dashed across to him and spent his free Cure Wounds to bring him back on 11 hit points [395][396][397]. For the swim to the Aurelian coast he gave himself gills with Alter Self, and came ashore with a level of exhaustion [20][398]. By the beach fire, asked how he had healed Mike, he first told the party of his clerical training, of Vhal’Zarim and of the Platinum Order [399][22][400]. Next morning an Aurelian patrol condemned Mike as a heretic. Caelumn begged the knight, Glenn, to let him deal with the body, and was told the execution would still go ahead [401][402][403]; when Hugo refused to fight, he stood down and silently glared at Hugo as Mike died [404][405][406].

Session 19: A Penitent Priest, an Unmade Leash, and the Pixie in the Dark

Main article: Session 19

With Mike buried, Caelumn made the case for turning back from Aurelia: “Are we ready to lose six more just to try and sort this out?” [30]. The party abandoned the raid for the Egg for now, and he reclaimed an empty, mouldy backpack from the sewers to replace his lost one [407][196][197]. When Father Thomas, a priest of the patrol that had killed Mike, came to atone, Caelumn disowned Mike to his face and pressed him to be more open-minded about magic, saying nothing of his own faith [143][144]. In the night ambush his Chromatic Orb dissolved the Pixie into a puddle, but the wisps made him their target; Terry spent a Silvery Barbs on a wisp’s natural 20 against him, and he kept himself up with Cure Wounds [408][409][410][411].

Session 20: The Man Who Was Always Here

Main article: Session 20

Caelumn did the talking on the way out of Aurelian country. At the Eldwythe bridge his Persuasion won the merchant Laura Bennett’s agreement to vouch for the party as her guards, and when the checkpoint asked about heretics he answered, truthfully if narrowly, that they had watched one executed [35][412][36]. On the road he learned to drive Laura’s wagon team, and, briefing the newcomer Barney, tied the failing ley lines to the dying world dragon and the Egg [38][39][40]. In the ghoul ambush his fire killed three of the four ghouls that fell, the first to a Chromatic Orb as his scales gave off a platinum glow, and, suspecting a targeted attack, he asked Laura who might be after her [41][43][44][413].

Session 21: The Hand That Points North

Main article: Session 21

At Greysmere Caelumn did the party’s business: he reminded Father Thomas that Aurelians kidnap people too, talked Laura Bennett into waiting for them until midday, and took the innkeeper Orrin Sol’s job of finding his son, Pell [47][414][415][49]. In the raided storehouse he left the coins alone and kept Orrin’s list of what was stolen, and his appetite for loot carried the vote to enter the temple [50][200][201][53]. He opened the first fight with an Aganazzar’s Scorcher that the DM painted as “a platinum flame” [55]. Inside he pocketed The eye-and-mouth token and The skeleton’s whip, which the DM called cursed at the table [59][199][62]. His Command pried the living skin off Father Thomas, and it leapt onto his own face until Thomas freed him [416][65][417].

Session 22: The Dragon in the Statue

Main article: Session 22

Out of first-level slots, Caelumn was taken from behind by the living skin, blinded and unable to breathe, until Hugo cut it off him [418][419][420][421]. Once Terry had found the regenerating kobold’s painting under a tile, Caelumn set Create Bonfire under it, and the kobold died with the picture [422][423][424]. At the mural he gave up the secret that opened its hidden door: he used to visit “the priestesses’ bathing rooms and sneak peeks”. Hugo’s verdict was “You pervy little fucker.” [73][425][74]. He hoped the wounded dragon in the statue, Rime, was platinum, and was told “I’m just a silver dragon” [426][427]; he healed Rime with his free Cure Wounds [428]. He lost The Book of Secrets to Terry and pocketed about 150 gold coins instead [208][204][205].

Session 23: The Changeling in Manacles

Main article: Session 23

Picked by the DM’s d4 to give the table recap, Caelumn’s player was awarded a Cap of Water Breathing for it, out of character [84][86][209]. At the temple door a manacled prisoner, Kole, knew him as “Caelumn, the Sorcerer” and spoke into his mind; Caelumn answered in thought that they would get him out [429][430][431]. In the ambush that followed a greatsword skeleton flattened him twice, and on about seven hit points he spent what he had left on a Chromatic Orb that burned the cultist to a singed pile of bones [432][433][434][435][436]. Afterwards he offered Kole his hand and told him how the Aurelians had taken the Egg, and at the statue he still called Rime the Platinum Dragon and asked the wyrmling to help them stop the cultists [100][101][437][438].

Session 24: The Knight of Smoke

Main article: Session 24

Out of resources [439], Caelumn cut at the root room’s vines with a curved knife and was dragged in at zero hit points; his death saves failed while the table argued, and the DM let Father Thomas’s Healing Word stand, once, with a warning [440][441][442][443]. When the knight of smoke came out of the statue he knelt and told it, as a cover story, that the party had come to complete the ritual [444]. Asked whether he abandoned Bahamut for Vecna, his player answered in the third person, “Caelumn is starting to see Vecna’s ways.” [226][227]. The DM ruled only that the knight turned its gaze from him to his allies, and refused to count his words for them [445][446]. It let him pass, and he took The pink unicorn plush and some gold [447][216].

Inter-PC tension after s18

Mike’s execution put the first visible strain between Caelumn and Hugo. Caelumn was the only PC to try to stop the execution, pleading with the knight to let him deal with the body [448][401][402]; he gave way only when Hugo refused to engage and disowned the casters [404], and his “I shall silently glare back at Hugo” [406] as Mike died is on the record. The party walked on together, but the strain is on the books.

Status at the end of session 24

Alive, and with the party in the ridge temple, in the fight with the knight of smoke that the DM paused in initiative [449]. A root vine took him to zero hit points; his death saves, rolled together, failed, and Father Thomas’s Healing Word, allowed once, returned him on seven [440][441][442][443][450]. The knight has not attacked him, and he holds nine temporary hit points from Twilight Sanctuary; by his own count he has no spell slots or sorcery points left [451][439][452][447]. The exchange with the knight changed nothing that the DM stated about him. Asked whether he abandoned Bahamut and accepted Vecna as his one true god, his player hedged, then answered that Caelumn “is starting to see Vecna’s ways”; the knight turned its gaze from him to his allies, and the DM stated no change to his sheet, his faith or his standing [226][453][227][445][446]. The jokes that he is already a follower “by accident” (his player’s own) or “by the system” (Terry’s) are not canon, and what he told the knight, that the party had been tasked with completing the ritual, was an improvised cover story [454][444][455].

He holds The pink unicorn plush and the gold from under the knight statue, probably The root room’s curved knife, and still the black potion, untested [185][217][219][216]. The Dragonslayer Longsword is disputed between him and Hugo: he attuned to it in session 3, but from session 6 it is spoken of as Hugo’s, and which of them holds it is a question for the DM [160][161]. The Soulbinder’s Packed Ring is empty, and by his reading of its text a soul spent from it is lost for good; he asked for a retcon and no ruling can be made out [112]. From earlier sessions he still carries the Bloodwell Vial, the Cap of Water Breathing, The eye-and-mouth token, The skeleton’s whip, Orrin Sol’s list of stolen goods, his spear and two of Father Thomas’s goodberries, none of them shown in use in session 24 [86][87]. By his player’s out-of-character account the roughly 150 gold coins of session 22 are all in his own bag, to be shared “later” [211][212][204][205]. The DM recalled in session 23 that the Vecna mural took his secret in session 22, which he had hoped was forgotten; no curse is stated [104][456][457][458][459]. His pulled back of session 22, five feet off his movement apparently until a long rest, has not been mentioned since [78][460][461]. His clerical training has been canonical since session 18 [22]. The level up the DM promised for clearing this dungeon is still pending [147][148].

Player

Played by Toby throughout. The direct evidence is the DM’s “great job recapping, Toby” after Caelumn’s player gave the recap [286]. No absences. He joined session 17 partway through, when the DM brought him up to speed on the retcon [388]. He arrived a little late to session 22, and Father Thomas gave the recap while the table waited [462][463]. In session 23 he joined a little after the start, was picked by the DM’s d4 to give the recap, and was awarded a magic item for it [464][84][86].
