Asger, the Bubblegum Halfling when the party met him, is the lost brother of Edith Applegarth: a small pink bubblegum boy found in a candy-cane cage in Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage in session 13, forced to work in Nibblecheek’s kitchen and then locked up [9][34]. Freed, he waited in Bubba Walker’s room, was turned back into a normal halfling when Nibblecheek surrendered in session 14, and went with the party as a messenger for his sister [26][5][31]. An Aurelian archer killed him with a natural 20 in the ambush of session 15 [6].

Overview

Asger is the lost brother of Edith Applegarth, who asks the party after his sister [7][8]. The party found him in session 13 as a small pink bubblegum boy in a candy-cane cage in the basement of Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage, humming to himself [9]. He had been made to work in Nibblecheek’s kitchen and locked up after a string of baking mishaps [10]. The DM calls him Asger in a session 14 remark and in the session 15 ambush [11][12], and a ruling after session 17 confirmed his death (DM ruling 42). He was restored to a normal halfling in session 14 and killed in session 15.

Appearance and demeanour

A “small, like, pink bubblegum halfling” while cursed, a normal halfling once Nibblecheek turned the party’s transformations back [13][5]. He is polite, cheerful and a little forlorn: he hums in his cage, is glad to be let out, and says Nibblecheek is “a bit mean” and that he fears being replaced soon [9][13][14][15]. He is no fighter. “I’m just a little guy,” he says when Ruin asks for help [16].

  • Edith Applegarth: his sister, whom he misses; the party wondered whether he knew that the storybook in the cottage blames her for betraying him ([17][18]; DM ruling 41).
  • Uncle Nibblecheek: his “uncle”, who adopted him long ago, set him to work in the kitchen and locked him up [19][20].

Disposition towards the party

Grateful and trusting. He gives the party Nibblecheek’s measure, answers Ruin’s questions about the Gummy Prince, and is willing to wait or be sent on errands, though he would rather not walk the woods alone [2][21][4].

History in the campaign

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

In the basement dungeon the party saw a boy made of pink bubblegum humming in a cage, with a huge skeleton in another and four gingerbread guards between them [24]. Once the guards were dead, Hugo broke the cage and the halfling climbed out and thanked them [13]. He said Nibblecheek was a mean old man who ate only candy and the people he turned into candy and could not eat without his dentures, and that he had been made to work in the kitchen and then locked up [19]. Reminded of Edith’s lost brother, he said he would love to see her but was too small to cross the woods alone, and went to wait in Bubba’s room [25].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

Asger waited in Bubba’s room, twiddling his thumbs, where Ruin questioned him about the Gummy Mummy: it was the Gummy Prince, a selfish prince Nibblecheek had once cursed, honoured with a tomb, and only the “pretty powerful hag” himself could lift the curse [26][27]. Hugo later credited “the boy” with the advice to give Bubba his candy and send him to his room [28]. Nibblecheek’s surrender made him “a normal halfling now” [5]. With Eldwythe under Aurelian occupation, the party planned to send him in with word for the baker and his sister [29][30][31].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

When the Aurelian patrol attacked the camp by the lake, an archer picked a “relatively weak target” and, on a natural 20, put an arrow nearly the halfling’s own size through his skull and threw him into the water [6]. Terry, who could not see the archer, could not Silvery Barbs the roll [32]. He is not mentioned again.

Status

As of session 23. Dead, killed in the ambush of session 15 ([33]; DM ruling 42). The plan to reunite him with Edith died with him; whether Edith has learned of it is not shown.
