Asger (long known to the party only as the Bubblegum Halfling) is the long-lost brother of Edith Applegarth, rescued by the party in session 13 from a candy-cane cage in Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage. As a child he was traded to the hag by his sister in a bargain depicted in a children’s storybook in the cottage’s rock-candy library [5], of which he is unaware. He was forced to work in Nibblecheek’s kitchen and then locked up; the party freed him and he retreated to Bubba Walker’s room to wait. In session 14, Uncle Nibblecheek’s surrender terms included reverting all transformations: the bubblegum body was restored to a normal halfling. Per DM canonicalisation 2026-05-17, his true name is Asger and he was killed in the Aurelian ambush in s15. The plan to reunite him with Edith is therefore closed (impossible).
Overview
Asger (the Bubblegum Halfling to the party in the moment) is the long-lost brother of Edith Applegarth. The party found him in a candy-cane cage in the basement tunnel of Uncle Nibblecheek’s Candy Cottage and freed him in session 13 by cutting down the cage. His body had been transformed: pink, bubblegum-textured. He explained he had been forced to work in Nibblecheek’s kitchen, then locked up.
He is the bargained-away child from the rock-candy library’s storybook [5], in which a young Edith Applegarth visited the cottage and traded him to the hag. He does not know this; the party have not told him. Caelumn’s Insight check confirmed he is sincerely fond of Edith and would like to see her again [3].
Per DM canonicalisation 2026-05-17: the halfling’s true name is Asger. He was killed in the Aurelian ambush in s15 (off-screen as far as the party witnessed; the canon record now stands). The party never learned his name in play.
Appearance and demeanour
While captive: pink-bubblegum-bodied halfling, frightened, polite, grateful. Spoke with the openness of someone glad of company. After Uncle Nibblecheek’s s14 surrender terms reverted all transformations, he is presumed restored to normal halfling form.
History / role in the campaign
Session 13 — rescue
In the basement tunnel of the Candy Cottage, the party found candy-cane cages containing the Bubblegum Halfling, a large skeleton clutching an axe, and three Gingerbread Steves. After dispatching the Steves, Hugo cut down the halfling’s cage and he tumbled out unceremoniously. He explained his captivity and provided crucial intelligence on Nibblecheek:
“[Uncle Nibblecheek] is rather mean old man. And he eats nothing but candy. And the people he turns into candy. He seems to have lost his teeth a long time ago. Can’t really eat anything without his dentures.” — Bubblegum Halfling, [2]
He held Bubba Walker in a familial light (“kind of my brother, a little bit”). When Terry mentioned Edith Applegarth by name, the halfling’s face changed; he was clearly her long-lost brother. The party (knowing from the storybook that Edith had betrayed him) chose not to disclose this. He retreated to Bubba’s room to wait.
Session 14 — restored
In Nibblecheek’s surrender terms, Vasquez negotiated reversion of all candy-transformations including the bubblegum halfling restored to a normal halfling [4]. The halfling himself is not mentioned again in s14; whereabouts post-cottage are unspecified. He may still be in Bubba’s room; he may have left the cottage; he is not present with the party in the s15 escape.
Session 15 — killed in the Aurelian ambush
Per DM canonicalisation 2026-05-17, Asger was killed during the Aurelian ambush in s15. The party did not witness the death and never learned his name in play. The plan to reunite him with Edith Applegarth is closed (impossible); see the Edith Applegarth page and the Open Threads entry on Edith’s betrayal for the updated status.
